Bush TV 62 12in Bakelite Television, Bush TV 62 12in Bakelite Television, fully restored by the vendor with a Dominoe 625 - 405 line converter with a SCART lead, built and designed by Malcom Everiss. The Bush Radio Television Reciever Type TV22's main claim to fame was that it was the first British television that could be tuned, by the owner, to any one of the two then current BBC transmitters. It was also able to tune to the further three proposed channels. The Bush TV22 is an icon of early 1950s bakelite sets and highly desirable today, although in its day it was one of the cheapest sets available (at £35 and 10 shillings) - it was intended for those who couldn't afford a set with a ‘proper’ wooden cabinet. The post-war timber shortage was the main reason why some TV manufacturers used other materials for the cabinets. Condition PAT test fail as there is no earth to the chassis. Powers up and works well in conjunction with the converter - will need a new SCART lead.

HALL, Michael (editor). The London Mystery Magazine. London: Hulton Press and Norman Kark, 1949-1981. 125 vols. 8vo (187 x 129mm to 176 x 100mm.) Original card covers (some volumes with wear to spine ends, browning, some spotting). Note: a near complete run of the magazine, lacking numbers 2,3,7,11,15,28 and the last one, number 132. The Magazine changed its name to 'The London Mystery Selection' from volume 36 onwards. For the first 15 issues the address of the magazine was the famous 221b Baker Street. The Abbey Building Society - who were working from that address at the time- allowed Michael Hall to use it as the address for his new magazine on the basis that he answered all the mail that arrived for Sherlock Holmes, something that a Building Society employee, the worthy Samuel W.G. Morton, had been doing until that time (125).Buyer’s Premium 24.5% (including VAT @ 0%) of the hammer price. In this letter Cook says that 'you will already know that we are pressing the Government to hold a debate on Hong Kong in order to raise many of the concerns that were put to us so persuasively by those we met'. After 156 years of British rule, Hong Kong was returned to the People's Republic of China on the 30th June 1997. Cook offers the biography of Blair to Pattern as some 'light reading'.Buyer’s Premium 24.5% (including VAT @ 0%) of the hammer price. HANFF, Helene. 84, Charing Cross Road. London: Andre Deutsch, 1971. First UK edition, signed in a presentation signature by the author, 8vo (217 x 133mm.) (Toning, spotting to the front-free endpaper and fore-edge, finger-mark to the title-page.) Original red cloth (upper cover lifting, bumped to spine ends), dust-jacket designed by Janet Halverson (toned, small closed tears to spine ends). Note: the epistolatory book that became a film starring Anthony Hopkins and Anne Bancroft. Helene Hanff's letters to Marks & Co. are mainly addressed to Frank Doel, who died in 1968 and Helene was unable to visit London until 1971, the year of the English publication of their letters, and so never met him. The book is inscribed to John Wilson, an employee of Hatchards (and the son of John G. Wilson, who wrote 'The Business of Bookselling'). It's likely that Hanff inscribed this copy while on that visit to England. The dedication reads: 'To John Wilson who probably wrote better letters but was too lazy to make a book of them- with admiration for his beautiful beard, Helene Hanff'. Provenance: John Wilson (dedication on the front-free endpaper).Buyer’s Premium 24.5% (including VAT @ 0%) of the hammer price. SITWELL, Edith. Collected Poems. London: Macmillan & Co., 1957. First edition, with 5 a.l.s. loosely inserted, 8vo (215 x 134mm.) (Spotting and browning to preliminaries and fore-edge.) Original blue cloth (browned to extremities), dust-jacket (browning and staining to spine panel). Note: the letters are all addressed to Sheila Wilson and dated 1955-1958. They are chatty, affectionate letters, referring to the literary life: her publisher has reduced her 'to idiocy' by making her sign her name 3000 times, inviting Sheila for drinks 'with a boy who I think is going to be a really great poet'- Quentin Stevenson. There's other news: 'We are all really pleased about Osbert getting the C.H.' And domestic travails, too: the grumbling cat who follows the 'gay parlour-maid' around then 'climbs up the honeysuckle…in the middle of the night and starts grumbling again'. There's also a signed post-card and printed questionnaire she has written to fend off amateur poets from pestering her. One of the eighteen, interrogative questions being '[What is the] Age, Sex and Weight of your wife?'. Another, indicative of the time, being: 'Did you ever meet Burgess and Maclean, or anyone who ever knew them?' Sitwell helped Quentin Stevenson publish his first book of poetry but he soon changed his name to John Quentin, and is perhaps better known as a film actor.Buyer’s Premium 24.5% (including VAT @ 0%) of the hammer price. A set of 22 original photo negatives, depicting the Sex Pistols and support acts The Clash and Johnny Thunders on stage, as well as the crowd during the Caerphilly date on the ill-fated Anarchy In The Uk tour. The images depict the Sex Pistols in full colour, and were taken on 14th December 1976 by local photographer and fan David Smitham who remembers the gig well: ""The little valleys market town braced itself for the arrival of riotous punk hordes. No chance of a pre-gig pint - all pub doors were locked and windows boarded up in anticipation of mayhem. Hastily-scrawled signs directed regulars to back door entrances. "Having survived... demonstrating carol singers, the few who turned up... shivered in a ragged queue. From the opposite car park, against the backdrop of Caerphilly's ruined 13th century castle, a vengeful Pentecostal preacher spat fire and brimstone, threatening eternal damnation to those who dared watch the spawn of Satan."" Similarly to the Manchester Free Trade Hall concerts of the same year, the Caerphilly concerts were also important to cultural development in South Wales and would inspire attendees Steve Strange of Visage fame and Chris Sullivan who would later open influential nightclubs Hell, St Moritz and The Wag. The images are offered here with full copyright.

A typed letter on NEMS stationery dated 10th February 1962 and sent from Brian Epstein to Dick Rowe in the Decca Offices. This letter offers confirmation that Brian Epstein himself refused a subsequent offer (following the audition and initial rejection) from Decca to help press records featuring the Beatles, with Epstein stating 'whilst i appreciate the offer of Mr. Meehan's services I have now decided not to accept' and then 'The principal reason for this change of mind is that since i saw you last the Group have received an offer of a recording Contract from another Company'. The Beatles would sign with Parlophone following a meeting between Epstein and George Martin on 13th February, three days after the sending of this telegram, so Epstein's claim of another offer of a recording contract was untrue and likely the result of a wounded pride following the initial Decca rejection. It is highly likely that if Epstein had not sent this letter rejecting Decca's offer, that the band we know as The Beatles may not have gone on to have the success that they did. The letter is from the collection of Colin Borland, a sales and marketing manager at Decca, who had met with Epstein in December of 1961 which resulted in a Decca rep travelling to Liverpool to listen to the band. Offered as further provenance: two business cards, three black and white photographs of Colin Borland at various Decca events/conferences, scanned extracts from Colin Borland's diary summaries in which he notes meetings with Epstein, as well as scanned extracts from Alan Bradley's 'For No One' detailing some of the events documented above, notably the initial meeting and letter of rejection. The letter measures 20 x 25cm and is in good condition.

Cunard 'Beatles Bahamas Special' menu with printed inner pages from February 1965 signed to the rear cover clearly and in good size by Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. The menu measures 19 x 27.5cm. The signatures were obtained by the vendor's sister, a stewardess with B.O.A.C. at the time - who was pictured on the steps of the plane with the group.

silvered metal, black patinated bronze base, signed ALEX FISHER/ BHANAVAR49cm (19 1/4in) highProvenance:20th Century Decorative Arts, Christie's South Kensington, 23 July 1993, lot 765;Purchased from Michael Whiteway, December 1993.Footnote: Literature:Coleman, B., The Best of British Arts & Crafts, Atglen, 2004, p. 213 (illustrated). Note:George Meredith’s The Story of Bhanavar the Beautiful, from a collection of pseudo-oriental stories titled The Shaving of Shagpat was first published in 1856 and became a popular subject of artists and sculptors of the period. The tale follows Bhanavar, an Arabian beauty and innocent daughter of a Caucasian amir, who gains possession of a magical jewel and is transformed into an evil queen of the serpents. In Alexander Fisher’s rendition he captures Bhanavar at the moment of transformation, with her arms held aloft to the heavens, creating a femme fatale figure that was a source of fascination to the public, as was shown in art and literature of the period, in the latter half of the long nineteenth century.
England, c.1505-1515 AD. An irregular stained glass panel with lead-alloy frame; deep blue field with painted image of an angel in profile; attributed to Barnard Flower. 300 grams, 36cm (14 1/4"). Ex central London gallery; previously from the Fairfield collection, 12 January 1996, lot 1049; previously with George A. Douglass, Sr, Greenwich, Conn. LG-9; formerly in the collection of Roy Grosvenor Thomas, London, UK. Barnard Flower was a renowned Flemish glazier who was commissioned by King Henry VII and later his son, Henry VIII from 1505 to 1517. He is believed to have been the first non-English holder of the office of King's Glazier. Flower came to England in the late 15th century and by 1496 he was providing glass for Henry's palace at Woodstock (Oxfordshire) and Sheen Palace in the following year. His workshop was located in Southwark to avoid the restrictions imposed by the Glaziers' Company in the City of London. Stained glass pieces attributed to Flower include: parts of the West Window of St George's Chapel, Windsor; some windows in King's College Chapel, Cambridge; most of the glazing at St Mary's Church, Fairford - the most complete set of mediaeval stained glass windows in England. 19th century AD. A Daoist woodblock print on paper, 'T'u K'eh - The Protectors of the rural places (A collection of Divinities of many Types)', serving as a magical charm; mounted on card. 207 grams, 24.5 x 27cm (9 1/2 x 10 1/2"). Ex central London gallery; previously with the French Sinologist Manly P. Hall (1901-1990), Burbank, California, USA, c.1995; formerly with Paul Pelliot (1878-1926); accompanied by a detailed previously researched cataloguing sheet. Chinese magic charms have a long history, commencing in the second century with the earliest schools of Daoism, the Taiping dao and Wudoumi dao, which promoted their curative powers. Since then, different types of charms have proliferated (see Feng Zuozhe and Li Fuhua, Zhongguo minjian zongjiao shi, Taipei 1994, pp. 124-133"). Traditionally, the most efficient charms were either issued by or possessed the stamp of Zhang tianshi, the spiritual head of Daoism (the status tianshi, or godly teacher, is inherited through generations by the descendants of Zhang Ling, who founded the Wudoumi dao school"). This centralisation provided a unified official format for priests to use in their charms, which was often combined with local folklore and Buddhism to produce a great many variations. A typical charm consists of a drawing and some calligraphy in a running style, and contains names of deities, zodiacal symbols and other ‘made-up’ characters. Animal or human figures may be represented. [No Reserve] Fine condition.
1st century BC. A biconical facetted lentoid-section lead slingshot (glans) inscribed with '[C] A [ES]' referencing Julius Caesar. Cf. D'Amato, R. and Sumner, G., Arms and Armour of the Imperial Roman Soldier: From Marius to Commodus, 112 BC-AD 192, London, 2009, fig.32, p.45, for a similar glandes from Zaragoza Museum. 59.7 grams, 35mm (1 1/2"). From the private collection of a London antiquarian since the 1980s. The slingshot (type Ia of the Völling classification) is inscribed with the abbreviated name of Julius Caesar; it was used in quantity at the Battle of Monda (or Munda) against the last fellows of Pompey, the leaders of the Optimates, on the 17th March 45 BC. Similar shots were used in the civil war among Pompey and Caesar, for which such bullets were created. The slingers of Caesar's age were part of the light infantry. Caesar already speaks of his Balearic slingers during the conquest of Gaul, who usually wore a short tunic and leather or rope sandals, along with a coat which could also have been used to store projectiles. Rather, they used a satchel to carry very deadly lead-like stones or bullets. The men employed several slings: one was tied around the head for quick employment should the other break during the battle. Fine condition.
9th century AD. A superb gilt-bronze trefoil brooch with alternating hatched and plain segments to the rim, dense inner pattern of chip-carved Borre Style scrolls and whorls with hatched blocks at the nodes; central triskele with knotwork detail, each arm terminating in a facing mask with pellet eyes and banded headdress; reverse with catch on one arm and pin absent, pin-lugs on another and loop on the third for attachment of a swag of beads, chatelaine, knife or other item. Cf. Beck, H. et al., Fibel und Fibeltracht, Berlin, 2000, p.194-5, for discussion of the type; Ewing, T., Viking Clothing, Stroud, 2007 plate 38; Wilson, D.M. and Klindt-Jensen, O. Viking Art, London, 1968, pl.XXXII; Smith, R.A. British Museum Guide to Anglo-Saxon Antiquities, reprinted Ipswich, 1993, p.160. Polder Vondsten, Een Cultuur-historisch magazine, April 2009, p.64-65; accompanied by copies of the relevant Polder Vondsten, Een Cultuur-historisch magazine magazine article pages. 77 grams, 89mm (3 1/2"). From an important Dutch collection; acquired in the early 1990s from Geert Nyboer, Bedum, Netherlands, who acquired the brooch in Northern Holland in the 1970s; this lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by AIAD certificate number no.10941-181636. This is an extremely rare example of a trefoil brooch with high-relief modelling to the surface detail. The Borre Style decoration was executed with precision in wax and the brooch itself cast by a master craftsman by the cire perdue process, then gilded to capture the glittering effect of the fine surface detailing; a true masterpiece. The trefoil type is based on a three-armed strap distributor for a sword-belt used by the Carolingian Franks, copied and re-modelled to Scandinavian taste and finally re-purposed as a female dress-ornament or brooch. A similar example from Tranby, Denmark, is held by the British Museum under acquisition number 1873,1211.1. The Tranby brooch is however less well-defined in its modelling and appears 'flatter' than the present example. An extremely rare world-class object.

Abraham Adda (b. circa 1855) had three sons, Victor (b. circa 1885-1965) a collector of coins, Iznik and ancient Egyptian objects; Fernand, a collector of Iznik ceramics, and Joseph. The collection has been situated in Europe since before the Second World War.; this lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by AIAD certificate number no.11022-181062. The hero triumphing over wild beasts is an old topic deriving from the Sumerian legend of the poem of Gilgamesh. Such iconography was popular across the civilisations of the Mesopotamian world. In the Achaemenian Empire the hero was transformed in the image of the Great King, who triumphs over the evil forces of nature. Usually the wild animals are represented held by their horns. On a few pieces, such as the one offered here, the king or hero is replaced by the Egyptian god Bes. Fair condition.
South Flanders, Tournai(?), c.1525 AD. An ogee-shaped glass panel in a lead-alloy frame, painted depiction of Saint Eligius of Noyon nimbate and seated on a throne reading a book on his lap, his crozier over one shoulder and his jeweller's hammer in his right hand; mitre on his head, wearing episcopal vestments; mounted in a carrier-frame. 568 grams, 22.5cm (9"). Ex central London gallery; acquired from Monastery Stained Glass, Northamptonshire, UK, in 2004; accompanied by a detailed previously researched and illustrated cataloguing sheet. Saint Eligius was born in c.590 in the village of Chaptelat, close to the city of Limoges, and died in c.669 in the city of Noyon. Together with Saint Remacle he founded the monastery of Solignac on his own estates and was appointed bishop of Noyon and Tournai in c. 640. During his life, he also worked as a goldsmith, mint-master and personal advisor to the Frankish king Chlotar II, and several remarkable treasures of goldsmith’s work have been attributed to his hand (the reliquaries of Saint Germanus of Auxerre and Saint Martin for example"). The legend of his life was, as with that of Saint Barbara (cat.no.16) disseminated primarily by the Golden Legend of Jacobus de Voragine. According to his hagiography he kept an apprentice who, when shoeing horses cut off their feet, changed the horseshoes, and put the feet back on the horses’ legs. The horses miraculously showed no injuries from such treatment, and it came to be believed that the apprentice had been none other than Christ Himself. This clearly embellished story nevertheless offered a parable for the work Eloy undertook during his time as bishop among the pagans: to remove the pagan elements, cleanse and improve the people, and implement the New Faith in society. As a result of his career and legend combined, he would later become the patron saint of metalworkers, carpenters, farriers, goldsmiths, and even miners, since each profession works with hammers. Although the present fragment has been cut down from a larger roundel it remains a remarkable and masterful piece of painting on some of the finest quality glass available to the Medieval craftsman, and its inclusion of a damascene-patterned background is of extreme rarity amongst surviving grisaille roundels. [No Reserve] Fine condition.
750-1375 AD. A life-size gold-alloy funerary mask produced using repoussé technique, the face with almond-shaped eyes below long brows, raised nose with two dangles, thin ellipsoidal mouth, deep nasolabial folds, abstract rectangular ears and large circular ear spools ornamented with a circumferential border of raised pellets-in-circles; clusters of tiny circular piercings in the ears and sides of the face where additional danglers probably once hung. See The Metropolitan Museum, accession number 1979.206.556, for a very similar example dated 9th-11th century AD. 135 grams, 30cm (11 3/4"). From the collection of A. Fisher, Hamburg, Germany; previously in the collection of Jose Carlos Sempiterno Ribeiro, Lisbon, Portugal; ex Spanish archaeologist; believed to have been acquired, circa 1960s-1970s; accompanied by a signed Yanto Alexander Fine Art catalogue entry; this lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by AIAD certificate number no.10882-179028. Made using 'Tumbaga gold'. Gold was a metal often used to represent the sun deity. Julie Jones writes that masks such as this 'once adorned the body of a deceased ruler on Peru's north coast. Powerful dynasties arose in this region between the 8th and the 14th centuries AD and amassed great riches in gold and silver before they were conquered by the Inca Empire in the late 15th century.' Such masks were placed into the grave on top or or near to the top of the body, and were intended to protect the deceased in the afterlife. The masks were also attached to the mummy bundles of the Sican elites as a substitute for the face of the deceased individual. Masks intended for use by the attendants who would serve the individual in the afterlife were also placed into the grave, along with artificial body parts such as arms and hands, positioned as though holding the ceremonial cups which were also deposited within the grave. The distinctive eyes given to this mask may represent an individual known as 'the Sican Deity'; some experts argue that an individual buried with such as mask was believed to adopt aspects of the sun deity's power and as such, would have been venerated upon their death. The dangles, adding a sense of movement to the body of the deceased, possibly reproduced a sense of life or rebirth during the burial ceremony.
