Australia - States : I've always liked collectors who accumulate classic material with the intention of sorting it out in the future because these are the real collections where there is a good chance of adding value by subsequent collector-owners making real 'finds'. This is one such 'collection' of Australia and Australian States (a great area to work with because the States are so complicated - for anybody prepared to put in the effort - this is where commitment can pay dividends... Presented here, by a collector who is retiring from philately, is an old A4 sized 'Pronto' 32 sides (page) stockbook, with 21 pages well-filled, predominantly tightly arranged used ranges well displayed, commencing Australia 'Roos' arranged by denomination from perhaps a few roos to up to circa 15 duplicated stamps - values from ½d through to 2 shilling, just one x 5s. Completely unchecked by us for wmks/types pmks/c.t.o., odd perfins noted. Similarly unchecked ranges KGV heads thru to 1s 4d, ovpts/perfins etc. The collection rolls out in like fashion for the 'States' - commencing Victoria, well loaded from very mixed condition imperfs, odd Stamp Duty' noted, followed by Queensland, good ranges imperf / perf chalons for Tasmania (usual cleaned fiscals noted - including a plausible imperf 2d green, mint with gum - stc £5,000 but cleaned and certainly re-gummed). South Australia from few 'imperfs' - noted 1 s. red-brown wmk large star perforate cds used ovpt. M.B. Marine Board, well worth checking with apparent 'blind' roulette to righ hand side, New South Wales follows from 'imperfs', then not so 'punchy' Western Australia 'Swans' perf types only - but possible postmark interest. Condition overall very mixed, many hundreds. Great opportunity for specialist - please ask for scans... HEAVY LOT, OVERSEAS BIDDERS PLEASE ENQUIRE FOR SHIPPING COST (One 'Pronto' Stock-book) [US2]

John Ferneley Snr. (1782-1860) Portrait of Sir Francis Grant on Grindal Oil on canvas, 83.5 by 110cm Provenance: Sir Francis Grant, thence by descent John Ferneley Snr. was arguably the most gifted painter of sporting subjects of his generation. What set him apart was his ability to pinpoint equine characteristics and to faithfully record the surrounding landscape. In this way, his works are some of the most important records of 19th Century Sporting Britain. Ferneley was the sixth son of a Leicestershire wheelwright, his talent was spotted at a young age by the Duke of Rutland who, in 1801, is said to have persuaded Ferneley's father to allow him to become a pupil of Ben Marshall, himself of Leicestershire origin who was then working in London. Ferneley studied and lodged with Marshall between 1801 and 1804 and was enrolled by him in the Royal Academy Schools. Ferneley's rise to prominence was fast, exhibiting his first picture at the Royal Academy in 1806. By 1814 he had set up his studio in Melton Mowbray, the hub of the fox-hunting scene with three fashionable packs, the Quorn, the Belvoir and the Cottesmore, providing hunting six days a week. Each winter an influx of 250-300 sportsmen, distinguished by birth, profession and intellect and unaccompanied by their wives, entered into a world obsessed by the chase. Ferneley flourished with a steady stream of patronage and his work became increasingly desirable. His patrons included many of the famous sportsmen of the day, and members of some of the most prominent aristocratic families. Sir Francis Grant PRA (1803-1878) was one such gentleman, his life-long passion for fox-hunting led him eventually to move to Melton Mowbray. Ferneley and Grant met during the 1820s when Grant studied under him. Following Grant's launch as a professional artist in the 1830s, he and Ferneley frequently collaborated, Grant providing portraits and Ferneley the animals. Portrait of Sir Francis Grant on Grindal is a wonderful example of this partnership, executed in 1851 when Grant was 48 years old, the face is a self-portrait by Grant. The present picture is not recorded in Ferneley's account books. This can be explained by the existence of an almost identical version of the work, commissioned by Ferneley's friend and patron Little Gilmore. Portrait of F. Grant, Esq., A.R.A., on a favourite hunter was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1850, no. 536 (see Major G. Paget, The Melton Mowbray of John Ferneley, 1782-1860. The account books of John Ferneley, Leicester 1931, facing p. 51). As Ferneley exhibited only 22 works at the Royal Academy throughout his career, he was clearly extremely pleased with the portrait of Grant. Indeed, both artists were so delighted with the work that the following year they collaborated to bring about the present picture, with a few compositional alterations, for Grant's own personal collection. The work is a fine example of Ferneley's brilliance in rendering a remarkable horse portrait as well as his skill in conveying a sense of space and fresh air in the harmonious palette of the scenery, punctuated by the vibrant red of the huntsmen's coats.

John George Brown (1831-1913) American A study for ''Claiming the Shot: After the Hunt in the Adirondacks'' Signed, inscribed and dated 1865, oil on canvas, 39.5cm by 29.5cm Bears indistinct Christie's stencil to verso of frame Bears Goupil & Cie. stencil verso Born into a poor family in County Durham, Brown made his name and career in America after moving to New York City in 1853. In 1862 Brown completed one of his most important paintings ''Curling - A Scottish game at Central Park'' (MFA Houston), and whilst working on the commission met William Brand who was to become an important patron. It was Brand who commissioned ''Claiming the Shot: After the Hunt in the Adirondacks'' (Detroit Institute of Arts) and can be seen standing centrally in the composition. To the far left of the group stands the young boy from our study, holding his quarry. Brown painted a study of William Brand (private collection, USA) and it has been argued that the sitter in our painting could be one of Brand's sons.

Sally Arnup FRBS, ARCA (1930-2015) ''Seated Bloodhound'' Signed and numbered V/X, bronze, 54cm high Since prehistoric times, dogs have been depicted on the walls of caves, in Roman mosaics and ceramics and the ancient Egyptians celebrated Anubis - the god of the dead who watched over the dead and celebrated their fate in the underworld. Also in Homer's Odyssey, Odysseus' dog Argos was the only one to recognise him upon his return after 20 years away. Dogs symbolise loyalty, fidelity, guidance, protection, alertness and love. Therefore, unsurprisingly when we contacted Hannah (Sally's daughter) to ask if there was any particular reason why there were so many dogs in the collection her answer was that: ''We always had pets and animals around and it often dominated our lives. We had over the years: dogs, sometimes a cat (reluctantly), monkey, guinea pigs, rabbits, chickens, geese, ducks, peacocks, guinea fowl (noisy beasts), a ram, owls, foxes, fish and a snake. They were a constant part of our lives, as I remember, it was not uncommon for us to start the day with digging for 20 worms ...to feed the frogs, toads and newts. But dogs were her passion and were so important to her and therefore her work. Virtually all the dog bronzes were commissioned from adoring owners, many of whom became lifelong friends (both dog and owner).'' Hannah reminisces of the bloodhound: ''Her name was Trinket. She was an incredible character and of determined nature. I remember her with mixed emotions as she devoured in one swallow the freshly baked Swiss Roll that I was most proudly presenting to the family for a summer afternoon tea. My father commented that he had never seen me so angry!'' Trinket portrays Sally's ability to not only perfectly render the animal's appearance, but to convey the stoic, droopy, noble features of the creature. Her insistence on working directly from her subject and her ability to control her medium allowed Sally to explore and depict the hound's coat and features. She had the ability to convey the humour in the relationship between man and beast. Even at art college Sally was sure of her subject from the outset, much to the envy of many of her contemporaries. On the completion of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh's Fell Pony 'Storm', commissioned for His Royal Highness's 80th Birthday, he stated: ''It is no mean achievement to be able to convey the character, and characteristics, of individual animals in bronze. Sally Arnup has a wealth of experience in the sculpture of animals, and she also has the talent to capture their personality.''
