BRUCE LEE - Bruce Lee's Hand-Drawn and Signed Flying Kung Fu Warriors IllustrationA rare, ornately detailed hand-drawn illustration by martial arts legend Bruce Lee. Lee, a gifted visual artist who loved to draw martial arts-related subjects and themes, hand-rendered this alluring illustration of four classical Kung Fu warriors in mid-fight, with each one brandishing a signature weapon. The drawing is beautifully articulated in Lee's distinctive style and features his personal signature in the top left corner in green ink. Lee gifted this drawing to his younger brother, Robert, between 1968 and 1970, shortly before he returned to Hong Kong to launch his groundbreaking career in film with Golden Harvest Studios. In the years before his death, Lee had been developing a script entitled "Northern Leg, Southern Fist," a film intended to showcase his extraordinary abilities with classical Chinese weapons. The artist also engaged in two historic photoshoots - one at Golden Harvest Studios and the other at Shaw Brother's Studios - in which he dressed as iconic historical, literary, and pop cultural Chinese characters or archetypes. As he hoped to star in, direct, and produce a film in the popular martial arts sub-genre, it is likely such a project as "Northern Leg, Southern Fist" was on his mind when he created this evocative illustration. Bruce Lee drawings with this level of detail are extremely rare. This illustration exhibits significant creasing and tanning along the right edge, and mild tanning and creasing along the left edge. The main body of the illustration and the signature, however, retain their original clarity and vibrancy. JODOROWSKY'S DUNE - Circa 1980s Bound Copy of Storyboard and Design Bible for Alejandro Jodorowsky's Unproduced DuneA circa 1980s bound copy of the storyboard and design bible for Alejandro Jodorowsky's unproduced version of the sci-fi epic Dune, based on the novel by Frank Herbert. Director Jodorowsky and producer Michel Seydoux went through an extensive development period in 1974 and 1975 for their never-realized version of the film, working with famed artists Jean Giraud, known as Moebius, Chris Foss, and H.R. Giger. As they developed and attempted to finance the project, they produced a visual bible containing a complete illustrated storyboard for the film done by Moebius, as well as concept illustrations for vehicles, characters, and sets by Moebius and artists Foss and Giger. These binders, produced in 1974 or 1975, were used by the creative team to express the vision for the project. They were bound in cloth, with a printed color cover attached to the front along the lines of a promotional poster. Only a small number were produced for the key team members of the project. In the 1980s, a very few exceptional printed copies of the original design bible were created. These copies were distinguished by their red leather covers and gold title lettering. They also included the full storyboard and numerous design sketches by Foss, Giger, and Moebius and are believed to be complete reproductions of the original production-era bible. A copy of the original cover is also bound into the red-leather version. They were a larger size than the original binders, and as they were likely an additional generation along in the copying process, binding can be seen on the right edge of many of the printed pages in this version of the design bible. The red-leather books were created at Jean Giraud's company Starwatcher Graphics and only a handful of these later copies are known to exist; this example has been with the current owner since approximately 1988 and was received from Starwatcher at that time. This printed book opens with seven color printed pages of character designs and moves into more than 250 black-and-white printed pages containing extensive storyboards for all 90 scenes of the proposed film, along with intermittent printed design sketches for vehicles, sets, and other visual elements of the film. The storyboards were originally drawn by Moebius, who also created most of the costume designs. Many other design sketches and illustrations were created by Foss and Giger. The storyboard pages contain text descriptions in both French and English.Jodorowsky's Dune project has been heavily studied by cinephiles and celebrated in the 2013 documentary Jodorowsky's Dune. These design bibles are therefore well-known to fans of his work, despite their exceeding rarity; only a couple examples of the production-era bibles have been offered in the past, and this is believed to be the only "second edition" (circa 1980s) version to come to auction. The book exhibits minor wear on the corners, and some variation on the quality and clarity of the printed images on the interior. Original Titanic PlanThis is a rare piece. Original Titanic site navigation plans, found in an old Harland and Wolff tradesman?s box that was passed down to a descendent from Robert Falconer Keith, the man who launched the Titanic. The box sat for many decades unopened and emerged during a clear-out. In amongst old tools was the Titanic plans, with the lovely patina from daily use by tradesmen. These were plans issued to the workers on the Titanic so they could find their way around the ship while they were working on it. As the ship was not named at the time there is no name on the plansThe plan would be a Gel-Lithograph copy of the original plan thus the red outlines, the condition is as you would expect for something that was carried around in a toolbox and used by workmen to find their way around. Plenty of good wear and tear but still intact and in good condition. As a working navigation plan this has much more character than the standard plans.A rare chance to own a piece of history, this plan almost certainly has been on the Titanic as it was used on the ship to navigate around the hull.

ISMAEL GONZÁLEZ DE LA SERNA (Guadix, Granada, 1898 - Paris, 1968).Untitled, 1937.Mixed media on panel. With stamps from private collections: E. James and Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler.Presents label of the Clovis Gallery, Paris.Measurements: 39 x 46,5 cm; 57 x 64 cm (frame). In the year this piece was made, 1937, Ismael González took part in the Spanish Pavilion at the International Exhibition in Paris, thus proving his worth as a painter and establishing his career in the eyes of the critics and the public. However, although this was a good professional period, the ravages of the war had left a strong impression on the artist that is reflected in his painting. This work is an example of this, as we can see how he gradually eliminated his Cubist influence and introduced a much more expressive and tragic chromatic range. In this still life, the main motif, the fruit bowl, still retains this cubist heritage both in form and in the artist's treatment of shadow. However, the space with the background open to the outside, the score and the presence of the letters show us a compositional conception with a classical heritage. Ismael González de la Serna began his art studies in Granada and completed them in Madrid, at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts. In his early years he developed an eclectic pictorial style, drawing on Impressionist, Symbolist and Modernist sources. One of the first examples of his youthful language can be found in the illustrations he made for his childhood friend Federico García Lorca, in what was to be his first book, "Impresiones y paisajes" (1918). That same year, Ismael de la Serna held his first exhibition in Granada, and shortly afterwards he presented his works at the Ateneo in Madrid. In 1921 he moved to Paris in order to broaden his artistic horizons, joining the circles of the School of Paris. Among his Parisian friends was Pablo Picasso, who influenced his work but was, above all, the Granada painter's protector. During this period De la Serna's style was permeable to the influences of the avant-garde, particularly Cubism and Expressionism, which he worked in a highly personal manner. Likewise, the initial influence of Impressionism was always evident in his work. The year 1927 marked the beginning of a period of strong influence on his work, which began with the painter's solo exhibition at the influential Paris gallery of Paul Guillaume. This exhibition was followed by many others, both in Paris and in Berlin, Brussels, Copenhagen, Granada and Mexico. In 1928 he was commissioned by the director of "Cahiers d'Art", Christian Zervos, to illustrate a special edition of twenty sonnets by Góngora. The key to his recognition lies in his sensual interpretation of the forms of Cubism, based on the relevance of a drawing with a sinuous and highly decorative line, combined with strong chromatic contrasts. With a marked spatial sense and without ever abandoning figuration, De la Serna mainly depicted still lifes, in which he emphasised the sensory aspect of his painting with metaphorical sensory references such as music, fruit or open windows. He also worked on landscapes and portraits. After inaugurating the activities of the Asociación de Artistas Ibéricos in Madrid with a solo exhibition in 1932, the painter embarked on new avenues of artistic experimentation which, after the Second World War, led to a more schematic and simplified style of painting, close to contemporary abstract solutions. Ismael de la Serna is represented in the Patio Herreriano Museum in Valladolid, the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid, the Fine Arts Museums of Granada and Seville, the ARTIUM in Vitoria, the Popular Museum of Contemporary Art in Vilafamés and the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, among many others.

The Thompson Wine Glass: a highly important Beilby enamelled crested wine glass, circa 1769The ogee bowl with a slightly deceptive base, painted with the crest of the Thompson family in purple, white and yellow, an arm in armour embowed quarterly or and azure, holding in the gauntlet proper a broken lance of the first, on a ribbon wreath supported by a scrollwork bracket and flanked by foliage in opaque white, the reverse with a branch of fruiting vine, faint traces of gilding to the rim edge, on a double-series opaque twist stem containing a multi-ply corkscrew within two pairs eight-ply spiral bands, over a conical foot, 15cm highFootnotes:ProvenancePeter Lazarus CollectionSotheby's, 21 November 2006, lot 68Chris Crabtree Collection, Bonhams, 19 May 2010, lot 46Darell Thompson-Schwab CollectionLiteratureJames Rush, A Beilby Odyssey (1987), p.131, no.94ExhibitedBristol Museum and Art GalleryL'Association Internationale pour l'Histoire du Verre Exhibition, Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, 1979, no.44The Decorated Glasses of William and Mary Beilby, Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 1980, no.68The crest on this exceptional glass has been previously attributed to Stephen Thompson (1699-1763) of Kirby Hall in Little Ouseburn, North Yorkshire. However, he died without issue in 1763 and this perhaps just predates this glass. Upon his death title passed to his brother John Thompson (1701-1773). John's eldest son and heir Henry Thompson (1743-1814) married Mary Spence (1750-1843) on 30 January 1769 and it is likely that this glass was commissioned from the Beilby workshop to celebrate the occasion. To the wealthy, titled Thompson family Mary brought her own considerable inheritance as the only child of Thomas Spence of Harts Hall, Suffolk. Indeed, it is now known that Beilby glasses such as this were commissioned to celebrate marriages, with the most notable perhaps being the set of armorial Marriage Glasses made for the marriage of Jane and Crosier Surtees in September 1769, sold by Bonhams on 23 June 2021, lots 9-12.Whilst other Beilby crested and armorial wine glasses are known to have been made in sets, the present glass would appear to be the only example recorded bearing the Thompson crest. A portrait of Mary as Rachel at the Well by the American artist Benjamin West hangs in the Chrysler Museum of Art (inv. no.71.720). Interestingly, Henry Thompson's great-granduncle was Jonas Thompson (1608-1648) of Killerby in Yorkshire, who had married Frances Beilby (born about 1610) of Killerby and Micklethwaite Grange, Collingham, in 1629. The Beilbys of Newcastle-upon-Tyne were directly descended from the Micklethwaite Grange branch of the Beilby family, Francis being the great-grandaunt of the renowned enameller William Beilby. A related armorial goblet bearing the arms of Beilby Thompson (1742-1799) of Micklethwaite Grange was sold by Bonhams on 16 December 2009, lot 58.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A rare pair of early glass candlesticks, probably French, late 17th centuryPerhaps Bernard Perrot, Orléans, with cylindrical nozzles folded at the rims, resting on collars above solid quatrefoil knops containing small tears, the broad drip pans set between knops and moulded with twelve radiating ribs to the undersides, set on a wide collars above tall spreading feet moulded with fourteen gadroons to the upper parts, the rims of the drip pans and feet folded over, 18.5cm and 18.7cm high (2)Footnotes:ProvenanceSotheby's, 23 June 1944, lot 65No other similar candlesticks would appear to be recorded in the literature. The solid quatrefoil knops have very close similarities to a series of ewers or jugs attributed to Bernard Perrot (1640-1709), a glassmaker of Italian origin who was active in Orléans from 1662, see the exhibition catalogue, Bernard Perrot 1640-1709 (2010), p.141, nos.77 and 78 and pp.148-9, no.101.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Whist sealed bottle with earlier dates exist, these are of transitional 'Shaft and Globe/Onion' form and not true 'Onion' bottles, making this one of the most important dated sealed wine bottles recorded. Chedworth is a village in Gloucestershire just north of Cirencester. The seal can be attributed to Sir Richard Grobham Howe, 3rd Baronet (circa 1651-1730, an MP for Wilshire who died without issue). For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A rare and early baluster goblet, perhaps Liège, late 17th centuryIn soda glass, the generous round funnel bowl heavily moulded with 'nipt diamond waies' at the base, the unusual multi-knopped stem moulded with fine flutes or ribs, with an upper hollow shoulder knop set between double collars above a wide cushion knop and hollow baluster also set on double collars, over a short plain section and conical foot nearly folded at the rim, 25.1cm highFootnotes:ProvenancePrivate British CollectionThe technique of 'nipt diamond waies' originated in Venice and was popular in northern Europe, particularly the Netherlands, in the 17th century. The term was first used in 1677 by George Ravenscroft who used the technique to decorate early English vessels of lead glass. The ribbed stem formation is most unusual and there do not appear to be any parallels recorded in the literature. A late 17th century table bell in the form of a double wine glass with 'nipt diamond waies decoration, attributed to Liège and now in the Grand Curtius Museum, is illustrated by Joseph Philippe, Glass History and Art (1982), p.88, fig.125 and may be of related manufacture. For a late 17th century English armorial baluster goblet of comparable form but in lead glass, perhaps a product of the Savoy Glasshouse at the end of the Hawley Bishopp period, see that sold by Bonhams on 21 November 2014, lot 81.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The initials relate to Robert Incledon (1675-1758), who built Pilton House in Barnstaple in 1746. The family had a particularly strong connection with the Chichester family of Hall, near Barnstaple, with Robert's eldest brother Lewis marrying Susannah Chichester in 1714. Indeed, this bottle formed part of the Chichester collection when sold by Sotheby's at Hall in 1996. This is the only recorded bottle with a seal bearing these arms. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

British National Antarctic Expedition 1901-04. A silver plated fork engraved 'Discovery 1901' formerly the property of Louis Charles Bernacchi: 20.5cm long.*Notes- Louis Charles Bernacchi was born in Belgium in 1876 to Italian parents who subsequently emigrated to Australia. Attending Melbourne Observatory in 1895 he developed an interest in Antarctic exploration and joined Carsten's Borchgrevink's Southern Cross expedition (1898-1900) when he was just 22 years old. This was the first expedition to spend the winter on the Antarctic continent and the first to sledge towards the South Pole. Louis then joined Robert Falcon Scott's Discovery expedition (1901-1904) and was the only man on board the Discovery who had previously been to the Antarctic (in relative terms he was a "veteran" of the Antarctic) . As one of the scientific officers on board his role was to collect geomagnetic data as they approached the South Pole, something that had not been studied to any extent before. Scott was Louis's best man at his wedding. He was awarded the Polar Medal and the French Legion d'honneur amongst other awards.*Provenance- By direct family descent.

An oak and copper plaque constructed from material of HMS Foudroyant: the central copper repousse plaque with Royal Coat of Arms flanked by shields inscribed with launch date and wreck date, over an image of the ship aground with legend beneath 'Made from the Old Foudroyant' with floral border in a fielded oak panel frame with carved leaf spandrels, 38.5x30cm.*Notes- laid down in 1789, this was the second ship to be given the name Foudroyant and was the second two-decker to be built carrying 80 guns. Modelled upon the French Foudroyant, Nelson took great interest in her development and had intentions of making her his flagship as soon as she was launched, but took the Vanguard instead as Foudroyant had not yet been completed. Nelson transferred his flag to the Foudroyant in 1799 while dealing with the return of the Neapolitan Royal family to Naples, she returned under the flag of Captain John Clarke Searle in June 1801. Foudroyant returned home after the Napoleonic wars to become the guardship of Plymouth in 1819 and was converted to a gunnery training ship in 1862, a role she undertook until 1894 when she returned to port duties. In 1891 she was sold out of service and immediately resold to a German shipbreaking company, the ensuing public protest led to her being repurchased by Wheatly Cobb who refitted her as a training ship. In order to recoup the £20,000 cost of refitting she was taken around English seaside resorts for exhibition, but was wrecked at Blackpool in 1897 during a violent storm. The wreck was sold for £250 to a Mr Hayhurst who began to dismantle the ship, but relinquished the task when a passer by was injured by a dynamite blast, after which she was purchased by the Manchester firm of Goodall Lamb & Heighway.
