Shingai Shoniwa / MoschinoA Stage-Worn Moschino Couture 'Golden Needle' Playsuit, 2009black acetate and Rayon fabric with golden coated plastic needles hanging in rows from the bust, as worn by Shingai for The Noisettes gig at Scala London, 11th March 2009 Labelled size IT 42, FR 38, UK 10Footnotes:ProvenanceOffered by singer, songwriter and musician, Shingai Shoniwa.About the playsuit, Shingai says: 'The show at the Scala was a pivotal moment for us [Noisettes] as we opened up for The Heavy who were huge in America. It was an incendiary performance and led to our first big American Tour. When I clocked this Moschino playsuit embellished with gold sewing needles it automatically reminded me of my grandmother. I was sent to live with her upon my father's passing when I was 9. She was an important matriarchal figure in our village not far from Lilongwe, Malawi. She was also the most skilled dressmaker and designer for miles. Gogo (Grandmother in Chichewa) and I would bond whilst I sat at the base of the sewing machine, I was her little assistant, threading needles of all shapes and sizes as she proceeded to sew up my broken heart. That year spent with Gogo cemented my desire to create as I saw how happy it made people. I'd give anything for Gogo to have been able to see me shine in an outfit so symbolic of who she was - black & gold, but she passed away when I was 15. Her legacy lives on in my style, creativity and of course my love of unique playsuits.'For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLarenAn 'Exposé' Seditionaries T-shirt, 1977in white jersey, red and black 'King Kong' imagery with 'Seditionaries' and Sex Pistols cartoons printed to front, unlabelled as this was a prototype and not for sale, together with an original copy of SKUM fanzine issue no.3 signed by Mark Jay, and a letter of provenance (2)Footnotes:ProvenanceThe Mark Jay Collection.Londoner Mark Jay became involved in the very beginnings of Punk's evolution. Picking up a copy of the fanzine Sniffin' Glue at an early Sex Pistols gig, he was inspired to produce his own. With the help of a couple of like-minded school friends, he created SKUM, one of the first wave of such fanzines. It lasted for seven issues and included interviews with many seminal Punk figures, including a pre-Pistols Sid Vicious (his first ever interview), a pre-Pogues Shane McGowan, reviews of The Clash by a pre-Spandau Ballet Gary Kemp and lots of content either directly related to, or commissioned by, the Sex Pistols' camp. Mark had been a regular visitor to the Sex boutique at 430 Kings Road since mid-1976 and SKUM was the only Punk fanzine to be on sale there, from issue No.1. Mark's personal collection of items from this period was therefore obtained through his close association with the groups, their offices and their entourages. On 7th June 1977, Mark was one of the few fans lucky enough to be invited to attend the Sex Pistols' legendary 'Boat Party' concert on the River Thames during celebrations for the Queen's Silver Jubilee. It was totally normal for the likes of Joe Strummer, Mick Jones or Johnny Rotten to take the time to stop and interact with their fans. This is what made the Punk movement so special and made people feel involved. Being a fanzine editor, as he was, meant Mark could be part of the dialogue that Punk was creating on a day-to-day basis. There was a unique egalitarianism which allowed teenagers 'from nowhere', like Mark, to express themselves through music, print, design and fashion and, most importantly, be seen and heard by a wide and ever-expanding audience. This T-shirt is a rare design, probably only produced in very limited numbers. Mark collaborated with Vivienne on this as she incorporated some of his Sex Pistols cartoons from SKUM 3 into the design. Mark recalls that it was perhaps around January 1977 that Vivienne first approached him about using his drawings, pre-dating Mark's design for The Story So Far poster by about seven months, a proof of which is also included in this auction. The T-shirt offered here was the first prototype to be printed and given by Vivienne to Mark for his approval.Photographs exist of Sid Vicious sporting this particular design. One was taken with Nancy, probably July-August 1977, whilst another shows him with 'Mad' Jane Crockford, later a member of the Modettes, and who was responsible for the notorious Shane McGowan ear-biting incident at the Clash's ICA gig, 23rd October 1976.Sid appears to have customised the T-shirt, as Mark does not remember seeing it without sleeves and torn across the hem as seen in Sid's example, but that is characteristic of the way he and the other Pistols 'personalised' the clothing they were given. It had been modified in a similar way to the Two Cowboys T-shirt Sid gave to Mark and offered in this sale as Lot 9.The T-Shirt is offered with an original signed copy of SKUM issue no.3 which includes the second drag version of 'The Story So Far' cartoon strip from which some of the T-Shirt's images were taken. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

STEINWAY pianola-piano, first quarter of the 20th century.Measurements: 134 x 159 x 77,5 cm.Early 20th century pianola-piano with Aeolian's Metrostyle Themodist Temponamic playing system, in use between approximately 1913 and 1923. Aeolian Company mechanisms were mainly installed in pianos manufactured by the Aeolian Company, such as the Weber, Steck, Wheelock and Stroud. They were also available on Steinway pianos through an exclusive agreement. Aeolian had been under pressure to manufacture the mechanism for Steinway pianos, but Aeolian had no interest in establishing a relationship with a company it saw as direct competition. So, to satisfy Steinway, Aeolian agreed to stop promoting its Weber brand as a luxury piano firm, and also to stop sponsoring concerts by Paderewski and other great pianists of the day. The agreement also stipulated that Aeolian was to purchase a certain number of Steinway pianos per year, regardless of market demand. The mechanical piano was invented in Paris by Debain around 1850. His system consisted of adding to an upright piano a second set of hammers set in motion by a system of levers. Other pianos were later built on similar principles. The model known simply as the handle piano became very widespread in Italy and England, and from the end of the 19th century a large number of different systems were produced, which competed for the clientele of non-musician amateurs, cafés, etc. Later, the pianola, patented in 1898, would work with a compressed air mechanism.Founded in 1853 in New York by the German immigrant Heinrich E. Steinweg, who by then had already made almost five hundred pianos, Steinway & Sons was one of the main firms responsible for the development of the modern piano, especially during the forty years following its founding, when the company developed almost half of the one hundred and twenty-five patents it holds. Steinway's revolutionary designs, as well as the exceptional quality of its workmanship, earned the firm important international recognition from the very beginning. From 1855 onwards, it won gold medals at many exhibitions in the United States and Europe, most notably the Grand Gold Medal of Honour at the Paris Exposition of 1867. Steinway & Sons was the first American company to receive such a medal, and soon became the favourite of many members of the European aristocracy and the world's greatest pianists. To avoid import costs, Steinway opened its first European factory in 1880, in the German city of Hamburg. Ten years later, the company obtained its first royal warrant, from Queen Victoria of England. In the following years, Stewinway's client list would include the Prince of Wales and other members of European royalty and nobility. Soon it would also become a supplier to many other European royal houses, including Italy, Norway, Russia, Spain and Sweden, and even, in the East, to the Persian royal house.

Carpet, Calos IV. design; Royal Tapestry Factory, mid-20th century.Wool.Slight wear.Signed R.F.T.Measurements: 400 cm x 400 cm.The Royal Tapestry Factory of Santa Barbara was founded in Madrid in 1721 by Philip V, in imitation of the French royal workshops that followed the model of Colbert, to provide the pieces for the royal dependencies. Although initially the Royal Factory's production was centred on tapestries, the production of carpets soon became its means of survival, and therefore the basis of its production. It seems that it was in 1786 that the first of the Stuycks, the family who would exercise the artistic direction of the factory until the beginning of the 21st century, asked the king for permission for a nephew to weave "Turkish" carpets (knotted, not woven like a tapestry). These first carpets were in the Charles IV style, a language very much indebted to French classicism, with Hispanic touches and sometimes certain influences of the Empire style.

Pages 408 to 414.Measurements: 23 cm (height); 9.5 cm (largest diameter). The glass is made of blue blown glass, decorated with fine gold inclusions. The central part of the foot is formed by two circular rings, a flower in the central part and lateral glass cords. From its technical characteristics we can attribute it to a Murano master glassmaker of the period,Antonio Salviati (Vicenza, 1816-1890) was an Italian lawyer and businessman, founder of a top-class Venetian glass factory, responsible for the revival of the Venetian glass industry in the 19th century.A lawyer by profession, in 1866 they formed a partnership with Austen Henry Layard, the archaeologist who discovered Nineveh, with whom they formed the company Società Salviati e Compagni, based in Venice. The Salviati company won several important commissions, such as the mosaics for the back of the high altar in Westminster Abbey (1867), the ceiling of the Albert Memorial Chapel in Windsor Castle and the Palatine Chapel in Aachen (1870-1875). In 1876 he separated from his English partners and founded a new company which, in addition to mosaics, produced ornamental and table glass in a high quality Renaissance style. In the 1870s he also produced pieces in imitation of ancient Roman glass. His company took part in all the universal exhibitions at the end of the 19th century.
