THE WHITE STRIPES PIANO - A Herrburger Brooks London upright piano supplied by Nathanel Berry & Sons Ltd., produced around 1925. According to Toe Rag Studios founder and owner, Liam Watson, this piano was the no. 1 piano at Pathway Studios, where for many years well-known artists produced their records. In 1999 the piano found itself at Toe Rag Studios and remained there until 2012. During its time at the Toe Rag, it was featured on many records, of which the most popular was Elephant by The White Stripes. The piano is being sold for the benefit of “Barka UK” who are an organisation that works with excluded and vulnerable members of the society. A meeting with Jack White and Barka activists was held in July 2014 in Poland, during which Jack White autographed the piano and was later photographed with it. A signed polaroid of Jack with the piano is included with the lot along with a letter of provenance from Liam Watson. The site per this link explains http://www.pianoforbarka.com/ more about the piano and also includes an interview in which Jack talks about the piano. This instrument has been played by an impressive selection of musicians and holds the enviable claim of being the piano used to record one of the best albums in the past 20 years. Not just a must have for any White Stripes/Jack White fan but also an excellent investment with great provenance.

N. Pocock (1740 -1821), a gilded framed Watercolour painting on card very ably portraying the world renowned Fingal's cave on the Island of Staffa in the Hebrides, the landmark is shown with two figures on the rocky shore as a long boat approaches rowed by four oarsmen while the coxswain and a standing figure with a chart in his hand point to the approach to the cave, signed and dated 1792 to lower left. With the painting, formerly having been attached to the rear, is an old hand-written note reading ''FINGAL'S CAVE This picture, painted by Nicholas Pocock in 1793 is of Fingal's Cave (named after warrior hero of the Gaels of the second and third centuries AD). It is on the Island of Staffa, one of the Inner Hebrides. It is of the rock structure similar to that of the Giant's Causeway and as like giant organ pipes of a Cathedral probably due to the great upheaval of ancient lava. Because of the sound made, at times by the wind in the caves, it's Gaelic name is 'Cave of Music'. Nicholas Pocock 1741 - 1821 was the son of a Bristol Merchant. In his twenties he was master of two ships ''Lloyd'' in 1767 and later ''Minerva'' owned by Richard Champion, who later owned a china factory. A log of Cpt. Pocock's voyage to Jamaica in 1776 is now owned by Richard Walton of Ware Priory. He left the sea at 40 years and painted Fingal's Cave at the age of 50 years.'' Pocock was renowned for the charming drawings featured in the journals of his voyages, each day brought to life by an illustration of the most memorable incident. Interestingly, in the late 1700s, it is noted that he was resident at No. 12 Great George, Westminster, this being the modern day address of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

§ Mel Howse, 'Poverty Over' sculpture, 2010, enamel on steel, 220cm high, bowl 120cm diameter, This sculpture was made for and is being sold by Christian Aid. "Poverty: lack of money, food, shelter - but ultimately about inequality and lack of power. This piece explores the gap between those who are living in poverty and those who are not. Here are two circular vessels. The most conspicuous of these, a vertically oriented shallow lens, represents the human eye. It stares challengingly at us. The eye is society's conscience. Beneath sits a deep bowl, it's interior hidden from us. If we come closer we see another eye looking up from it's base. This is the eye of the poor - unseen from a distance and lost as we walk away. This eye requires more from us to get our attention. The juxtaposition of the two vessels implies that one vessel brings attention to the other. In essence they are the same. Poverty is staring at us and can be uncomfortable to witness. But once we have seen, the challenge is to act." The piece was commissioned in 2010 by Christian Aid who exhibited it throughout the cathedrals of Britain over a three year period. It was launched at Southwark Cathedral by Loretta Minghella. The surreal sculpture animated their campaign about poverty, drawing in visitors to see a unique and unusual piece of work formed of two huge enamelled vessels which are in the form of eyes internally. It is made from spun steel and fired industrial enamels. The sculpture is by contemporary glass artist and enameller Mel Howse. It features we believe, the largest hand worked enamelled bowl ever made at a diameter of approximately 1.2m and 600mm deep. Mel is an experimental glass artist who pushes the boundaries within her commissions. Her largest work is a 500m2 glass façade for a Sainsbury flagship store - hand made in fired enamels. Her most unusual piece is the The Artbath in cast iron and vitreous enamel. She has long worked in industrial environments to create glass art despite scale. The auctioneer's are waiving their vendor's commission on the sale to benefit Christian Aid
