HELVETIA, SWISS, A WORLD WAR I MILITARY ISSUE GENTLEMEN'S WRISTWATCH Having a circular black dial, luminous Arabic numerals and subsidiary seconds dial marked '15 Jewels Lever, Swiss Made'. N.B. by family decent, the watch was possibly the property of John Henry William, 24th Battalion Welsh Regiment who was awarded four gallantry medals,i ncluding the Victoria Cross, the medals are on display in the Brechon Museum, South West Borders, Wales, a photograph of two men together, both named John Williams who both received the Victoria cross medal, the photograph 'John Williams with John Williams' is particularly interesting, both men were soldiers in the 24th of Foot and just 39 years separates their Victoria Cross awards. The 'John Williams' on the right was born John Fielding and he was awarded his VC at Rorke's Drift, in 1879 (he changed his name when he took the King's Shilling - not uncommon in lads 'not wishing to be traced). In the film 'Zulu'. John Fielding/Williams was the 21 year old lad who held-out in the hospital room at bayonet point and with Hook, broke through three partition walls to evacuate eight patients to the inner lines of defence

The following collection of Staffordshire forms the Frank Arnold Jones Collection, a passionate researcher and collector of Staffordshire, who, along with his partner Jean, filled every nook and cranny of their Crewe home with figures, flatbacks, Toby jugs, pot lids and associated rustic bygones.A 19th century Staffordshire Toby jug modelled seated wearing tricorn hat and holding a jug, with sponge decoration, height 24.75cm.
Three WWII medals comprising a War Medal, Pacific Star and 1939-45 Star, issued to Private George Ritson of Bolton who was a member of the Royal Army Ordnance Corps, and died in 1943 as a prisoner of war in Japanese hands, with a collection of paperwork relating to Private Ritson including the notification of his death to his wife, other official papers, his commemorative scroll, photographs of Private Ritson and his grave etc.
An interesting tooled leather on board album from 1851 onwards, containing handwritten poems both in the album and on attached sheets by John Critchley Prince (1808 - 1866), the Wigan and Manchester working class poet, who edited a literary journal and published poetry from 1840 for the next 21 years, and handwritten poems by John Bolton Rogerson (1809 - 1859), who had a variety of appointments including editing literary journals in Manchester and published volumes of poetry 1843 - 1854, and handwritten poems by George Richardson of Moss-Side and his poem printed on silk to commemorate the Queen's visit to Manchester in 1851, and a watercolour of an Italian Scene by Welsh artist F Tavari, also prints and pressed foliage, album cover 29 x 24. CONDITION REPORT: As catalogued, this album contains one watercolour.
ELIOT, TS; a 1934 first edition of The Rock: a pageant play published by Faber & Faber, inscribed to Miss Phyllis Woodliffe, who had played the part of 'Mrs Bert' in the play, signed by TS Eliot and dated in 1934. TS Eliot had a minor correspondence with Miss Woodliffe which appears in the collected letters of TS Eliot volume 6. She was an actress and a receipt to her addressed to Sadler's Wells Theatre in London is included with the lot. The Rock was written as part of a fund raising campaign to assist the Forty-Five Churches Fund to build new churches in London's suburbs. The Rock expresses Eliot's thoughts on community and tradition which he later elaborated more famously in, for example, 'Murder in the Cathedral'.

Inlaid with a motto, Great Thoughts Have Wings, Think Thou And Act. In two sections and with fixing holes to the reverse, some veneer missing or loose. 66ins (167cms) by 30ins (76cms) *This panel has passed through the Lytton family, who have strong connections with Voysey. The panel may have come from Ockham Park or Ashley Combe, both of which had Voysey commissions within it.

Overbury (Sir Thomas). Sir Thomas Overbury his Wife. With Additions of New Characters, and many other Witty Conceits never before Printed, the sixteenth impression, printed by John Haviland, for A. Crooke, 1638, engraved portrait frontispiece (not called for), trimmed to image and window-mounted, occasional minor damp-staining to lower margins, two leaves with small loss to lower blank outer corner (one repaired), early 19th century diced calf, joints cracked, some wear and damp-staining, small 8vo ESTC S113550. Originally published in 1614 as 'A wife now a widowe'. All editions of this book are now scarce despite it being a popular book, reprinted and enlarged several times during the seventeenth century. Several characters are described, including: 'An Innes of Court man'; 'A Puny-Clarke'; 'A meere Pettyfogger'; and 'A Button-maker of Amsterdam'. In addition the book contains various poems, 'Newes From any whence', paradoxes, receipts and songs. John Webster and John Donne are amongst the various authors who also contributed to this edition. Geological Panorama. Geology Familiarly Illustrated, circa 1840-50, original pen & ink and watercolour humorous panorama on wove paper, watermarked J Whatman, 18--, folded in 19 sections containing 31 numbered and captioned caricatural scenes illustrating geological terminology wittily applied to human mishaps, overall measurement 13 x 32 cm (5.1 x 12.6 ins), bound concertina-style in contemporary plain boards, with manuscript title label to upper cover in black ink, rubbed and some soiling and discolouration to covers, oblong 8vo (14 x 185 cm) Inscribed in pencil to the blank verso of the final scene 'Helen Holbeche Sutton Coldfield', and with a later inscription by her nephew Richard Holbeche, dated 14th May 1899: 'I think that my Aunt Helen Holbeche must have drawn these about 1840. I copied them in 1844-5 very indifferently'. The Holbeches were a prominent family in Sutton Coldfield in the early 19th century, Helen being the eldest sister of Vincent Holbeche, a well-known solicitor who lived in Coleshill Street. An unusual manuscript version of a lithographed panorama by Catherine Mary Webber which was published by J.B. Goodinge of 21 Aldersgate Street, London, in 1859, with the same title. The present work appears to be a copy of the published panorama, although it cannot be ruled out that this manuscript version pre-dates the published issue, therefore suggesting that this work is the original on which Webber's panorama was based. Churchill (Winston S., 1874-1965). Marlborough: His Life and Times, 4 volumes 'Limited Presentation Edition', [1939], plates and illustrations, signed presentation inscription from the author to front free endpaper, 'To Sir Thomas Dunhill from Winston S. Churchill, May 1941', original purple cloth blocked in silver, slightly browned and chipped dust jackets with small barcode sticker to lower panels, 8vo Harrap produced this 'Limited Presentation Edition' in 1939 to deal with their overstock. Thus, volume 1 is a reprint of 1939, but volumes 2-4 are the same stock as the first editions, but all rebound in purple cloth with their distinctive jackets printed in black and orange on cream stock. Sir Thomas Peel Dunhill (1876-1957) was an Australian-born and trained doctor who specialised in the removal of the thyroid gland in treating exophthalmic goitre. He served in the Australian Imperial Force as Major in World War I and in 1918 was appointed consulting surgeon to the Rouen area in France. He was mentioned in despatches three times and was appointed CVO and CMG in 1919. In 1920 he joined the surgical unit at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London where he established himself as the best general surgeon. He was appointed surgeon to George V in 1928 and then successfully to Edward VII, George VI (becoming Sergeant Surgeon in 1949) and finally extra surgeon to Elizabeth II. He was appointed surgeon to the AIF in World War II and participated in emergency wartime medical services. He acted at Churchill's surgeon and carried out Churchill's hernia repair in 1947. (4)

Scarce important treatise on castrati, it is a translation by Robert Samber of 'Trait‚ des Eunuques', first published in 1707. Publisher Edmund Curll was renowned for the unscrupulous manner in which he operated and the scandalous and titillating nature of many of his publications. In an article in the 'Weekly Journal' (attributed to Defoe) the writer coined the word 'Curlicism' to describe the publisher's extraordinary activities, to which Curll responded with a pamphlet entitled 'Curlicism Display'd'. The whole being Moral and Instructive, reissue, 1725, engraved frontispiece depicting 20 hands signing 20 letters of the alphabet (close-trimmed at fore margin), some soiling and spotting, one or two closed tears and early annotations, two small holes in title where previous owner names erased, later calf-backed boards, spine a little faded, 8vo Scarce. First published in 1724, and in common with Daniel Defoe, Haywood found the fortune-teller Campbell to be an amusing charlatan, having observed him for some twenty years. The contents, in a series of letters contain intriguing anecdotes i.e. 'From a Servant-Maid under Temptations from her Master', 'From a young man who had three women in Love with him', and 'Another Performance of Mr. Campbell's relation to Witchcraft'. The 1966 Chelsea football team on typed Lufthansa headed paper dated 13 March 1966, the day after defeating Manchester United 2-0. Eight team members of West Ham football team, including Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters on a Lufthansa postcard, Jimmy Greaves dedicated signed autograph dated 25 May 1967 on a Lufthansa postcard. Signed photograph of Uwe Seeler, captain of the German 1966 Football team and eleven autographs of the 1966 Brazilian football team on a Lufthansa postcard including Pele. Radio/Theatre interest, two 1970s radio scripts for The Navy Lark, series twelve, No 3 and No 4, issued to Tenniel Evens who played the character Leading Seaman Goldstein in the program that was first transmitted on radio 2 on Sunday 30th May 1971 and Sunday 6th June 1971. Both scripts have the initials TE written in biro to the top of each script
CHINA - Church Missionary Society; letters home (1901-08) from Maud Hitchcock, missionary at Foochow, Haitan Island (Pingtan) & elsewhere; approx. 100pp. of num. typescript letters written to friends & supporters at Bermondsey Parish Church. * the varied (& sometimes arduous) missionary life - schools & hospital work, starting a village dispensary, various journeys (junk, steam launch, small boat) & long chair journey ('over mud'), boatmen problems (opium), but - 'I had already put the matter into the hands of Him Who rules the wind & the waves'; anti-opium work (with much native help), including a 'detox' refuge; the CMS. had commenced their China Mission in 1850.
***Tom Keating (1915-1984) - Oil painting - Self portrait, canvas 34.75ins x 29.5ins, signed, in gilt frame Provenance: Given by the artist to The Moving Picture Company who had produced two Channel 4 television series in which Keating appeared - "Keating on Painters" and "Keating on Art". Apparently Keating donated this work in gratitude and was hung in the board room of The Moving Picture Company for a number of years until they moved offices, when the painting was then offered to staff on sealed bid basis. The vendor acquired it at that time having successfully offered the highest bid.
A Chinese carved polychrome and giltwood seated figure of Tudigong - The Earth God holding a sycee in his left hand, 10ins (25.4cm) high, a similar seated figure of Gan Tian Da Di - The Emperor who influences Heaven, his feet resting on a tiger, 8.5ins (21.7cm) high, one other seated figure of Tudigong, 10.75ins (27.4cm) high, a seated figure of Nadu Gong - The local Earth God in Malaysia, 9ins (23cm) high, and two other figures, various Note : First Tudigong purchased in Singapore in 1968. Samuel John Lamorna Birch RA RWS (1869-1955) A COOL SPOT AT CLAPPER MILL, LAMORNA, CORNWALL, 1941 oil on board signed and dated lower left; signed and titled on reverse 14½ x 17½in. (36.83 x 44.45cm) Collection of George and Maura McClelland Lamorna Birch was born in Egremont, Cheshire, England. He was self-taught as an artist, except for a brief period of study at the Académie Colarossi in Paris during 1895. Birch settled in Lamorna, Cornwall in 1892. Many of his most famous pictures date from this time and the beautiful Lamorna Cove is usually their subject matter. He was attracted to Cornwall by the Newlyn group of artists but he ended up starting a second group based around his adopted home of Lamorna. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1893, was elected as an Associate (ARA) in 1926 and made a Royal Academician (RA) in 1934, and showed more than two hundred paintings there.[ He held his first one-man exhibition at the Fine Art Society in 1906 and is said to have produced more than 20,000 pictures. Like a number of his contemporaries, he was profiled as an 'Artist of Note' in The Artist magazine, by Richard Seddon, in the June 1944 edition. The exhibition Shades of British Impressionism Lamorna Birch and his Circle was shown at Warrington Museum & Art Gallery in the Mezzanine in October 2004. This details his links with Henry Scott Tuke and Thomas Cooper Gotch and many others who settled in the artists' colony in the 1880s and 1890s. "These painters helped to change the face of British art. Their emphasis on colour and light, truth and social realism brought about a revolution in British art." says the catalogue for the show.
Gregor Grey (fl.1870s-1911) DUCKLINGS, 1893 oil on canvas signed and dated lower left 13½ x 20¾in. (34.29 x 52.71cm) Gregor Grey was the son of Charles Grey RHA (c.1808-1892) and brother of the painters Alfred Grey RHA (1845-1926), Edwin Landseer Grey and James Grey and the engraver Charles Malcolm Grey. Gregor exhibited every year at the RHA from 1877-1911, averaging three to four exhibits a year - the most that a non-RHA member could possibly hope to have accepted. He also showed twice at the Oireachtas Art Exhibitions of 1906 and 1907. His works tended to be on a rustic theme and featured quaint, aneccdotal titles. Grey earned - albeit unwittingly - some modicum of posterity when James Joyce included in Ulysses a character called Gregor Grey who was the designer of Gallaher's map and whose career was given "a leg up" by illustrating an advertisement.

Tottenham v European Programmes + Rosette Collection: Incredible collection from Spurs supporter who collected a programme and a rosette from Home European matches he attended from the mid 50s to the mid 70s. Starting with an old Tottenham rosette then every rosette is accompanied by a programme for the following matches. 54/55 Racing Club, 55/56 Basle, 56/57 Partick, Red Banner, Hearts, Hibs, 61/62 Dukla, Feyenoord, Gornik, Benfica, 62/63 OFK Belgrade, Rangers, Slovan (pennant), 70/71 Motherwell, 71/72 Torino, AC Milan and 73/74 Aberdeen. There are some hard to obtain programmes which are in good condition with the rosettes being fair. 18 rosettes and 17 programmes.
