Now imagine him/her doing it for a set of who knows how many, whew, what a painstaking job! Notice that it is also backmarked. 1 Medium 19th century RARE "Liverpool" transfer colored Butterfly. The name given to these buttons was given by button collectors because the style of work was similar to that of work that was produced in Liverpool England, however they were most likely made in France in the late 19th century. The typical work found is of heads on white porcelain or colored backgrounds. Bruce says he has never seen this beautiful and colorful example before, although he has seen the design but not in color. This is a rare example for those who love "Liverpool" transfer buttons and/or Butterfly Buttons. And also for those who love Ceramic buttons or simply Buttons in general. Really great example. 1 Large-Medium 19th century oval Shibayama Button. Here is a beautifully hand crafted 19th century natural material inlayed button in the Shibayama technique. Shibayama is the name given to this style of inlay work after an 18th century Japanese artist who created and perfected the technique. Buttons were not made in this technique as far as we can tell till the late 19th century. Some of the Shibayama buttons one sees today were produced in China in the late 20th and early 21st centuries are not to be confused with these fine hand made versions from the 19th century. Oval examples are also much less common like this example. Issued: DIVISION 1=PRE 1918 AND DIVISION 3 IS AFTER 1918Dimensions: SM=Less than 3/4", Medium=3/4" to 1 1/4". 1 Large 18th C. engraved brass coated copper with colored pastes. This is an incredible button from the collection of Harry Case of Missouri who had compiled what many believe was the best ever 18th century copper collection on the world. We have been selling his buttons over the pat two years and this very rare example can now be yours. The button is engraved on the front with an array of small flowers in between the purple and clear pastes. 18th century coppers with this kind of OME is quite rare. Believe it or not many years ago the Page button auction one of these examples, just like this one, and I was actually on the phone to bid, Margaret McBride, (co-owner of Page) asked me did I want to bid $10000, I thought she said $1000 and I said yes, but she repeated the number to me and I said OH, NO. The button sold for $9500 plus the buyers premium bringing the final price with tax to almost $11000. If you don't believe me there are several people that remember this. However I have not seen another example since that time until acquiring Harry's collection for sale. If you want a truly incredible copper button from the 18th century here is your opportunity, that may never come up again. 1 Scarce Large Shakudo button with a meaning!Tin Dang once again has explained the meaning behind the depiction on this great and unusual Shakudo button from Japan. If you look at the top of the button you see three circles, these represent the "Thunder god-Raijin" the curly cues below the circles represent the scarf that the god wears and representing the cloud. You see lines inscribed below which is the rain. The three figures below are significant as well. The left figure you will notice is a man wearing only underwear, he represents the peasant poor man wearing a dry leaf on his head, the middle figure represents the working class man, and the third figure is the rich person, who is the only one who affords an umbrella, in this case a women. Obviously as can be see in the pictures each figure is wearing a covering over their heads to protect them from the storm. A very cool button to add to your collection. 1 Small 18th/19th C. transitional George Washington memorial. This is an extremely rare button. It was made somewhere between December 14th, 1799 (when GW passed away-Buried December 18th) and January of the year 1800 just after the passing of the Father of our Country George Washington. It is made in the same manner as the GW inaugural buttons as it is a copper button engraved like the inaugurals and in this case with a detailed memorial URN. The button can be found in the rare collection of Harold J. Cobb who amassed what was considered the largest and best collection of GW inaugural buttons. This button was made in round and oval and is way rarer than many of the GW inaugural examples as there were less of these memorial buttons made. This is a fantastic opportunity to own a real piece of American history that many button collectors do not even know existed. These have rarely come up for sale in the button world let alone the political world. Depending on the light its shown in it photographs copper color but in other light it photographs brass color, but the button is a copper button. ALFRED RUSSEL WALLACE INTEREST: DISTANT, W.L. - 'RHOPALOCERA MALAYANA': A DESCRIPTION OF THE BUTTERFLIES OF THE MALAY PENINSULA published by West, Newman & Co, London, and also D. Logan, Penang, 1882, retaining colour lithographed plates, with ink annotations throughout, believed to be that of Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913), the volume also annotated to front flyleaf 'L. Richmond Wheeler….Bound - Chowrata Malay School, Penang, May, 1937', later red half leather bindingProvenance: By repute, purchased from a second-hand bookshop in Southampton (UK) in 1978, along with a copy of Wallace's autobiography 'My Life' (1905) which contained an autographed letter of his (see Lot 169 in this auction). This volume has been inspected by Dr George Beccaloni, Director of the Wallace Correspondence Project. The annotations have been examined by an expert on Wallace's hand-writing who came to the conclusion that the handwriting was "probably that of Wallace.'' Wallace possibly used the book when he wrote a review of it for the journal Nature in 1882  - he was an admirer of Distant and corresponded with him on various issues.Supporting evidence of the date is found in a leaflet included in the book advertising the publication of The Butterflies of India, Burma and Ceylon (Marshall & Nicéville, Calcutta Press 1882) which is a comprehensive guide to butterfly species found in the regions of India, Burma (now Myanmar), and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). There is also, curiously, a pressed flower inside the back cover of the Distant book, provisionally identified by Sir Ghillean Prance as a species of Poppy,  which was almost certainly put there by the British educationalist, philosopher of biology and botanist Leonard Richard Wheeler (1888-1948), into whose hands the book seems to have passed after Wallace's death.  We shall never know the exact circumstances, but it seems feasible that Wallace brought this volume back from Malaya and that somehow it passed to Wheeler. Wheeler seemingly took the book to Penang with him where he worked as a Schools Inspector for the British Colonial Service. He has written on the inside cover of the book "L R Wheeler 1936,  Bound - Chlororasta Malay School, Penang May.1937". Wheeler returned to Britain in 1945 to avoid the advance of the Japanese forces into Penang.Note: Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913) was one of the leading evolutionary thinkers of the 19th century. A contemporary of Charles Darwin, he independently conceived the theory of evolution through natural selection, travelled the world collecting specimens including courageous solo trips up the Amazon and even addressed humanity's place in the universe. William Lucas Distant (1845-1922) was inspired to write a study of natural history on a whaling trip to the Malay Peninsula with his father in 1867. He was editor of the journal The Zoologist and was employed by the British Museum of Natural History between 1899 and 1920, where he worked mainly on bugs (Hemiptera). He also collected many species of insects during a four-year stay in South Africa, many of which were described in his 'Insecta Transvaaliensia' (1900-1911).

He was educated at Brighton College and thereafter became a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants. In this capacity he ran his Mother's family business of Thomas Wolfe Garage (1907) Ltd, based in Woburn Square in Bloomsbury. This was compulsorily purchased by London University after my Grandfather's death and now forms part of the site of the School of Oriental and African Studies. He married my Grandmother, Phyllis Mary Young in 1926 whereupon they moved to Leatherhead in Surrey and subsequently to a house called Highdown in Banstead, Surrey where they raised three children, including my late Mother. They lived there throughout the war years during which my Grandfather, being in a reserved occupation, acted as a fire watchman in the City of London. They moved to a bungalow that they designed and had built in the grounds of Highdown in 1964. He died of pancreatic cancer in 1967 and was survived by my Grandmother who died in 2011 at the age of 107. She left me my Grandfather's butterfly and moth collection which had, since the mid 1970's been on permanent loan to the Field Studies Council Centre at Juniper Hall at Boxhill in Surrey. My Sister and I remember our Grandfather with great affection. He was kind, warm hearted, generous and very funny; even given to the occasional practical joke. Larger than life he was a bon viveur, socialite, traveller and enthusiastic ballroom dancer as well as a keen collector not only of lepidoptera but of all things associated with natural history. "Bug hunting" led to many expeditions into the countryside, principally in the home counties but also further afield and, of course, many specimens were collected in the grounds of Highdown itself.
