An English officer, Captain Lyons of the Bengal Infantry, seated smoking a hookah, watching nautch girls performing, with a retinue of Indian musicians and servants Calcutta, by an Indian artist, after an original painting of 1801 by Captain Crockatt of the Bengal Engineers, circa 1810-12gouache on paper 380 x 530 mm.Footnotes:ProvenanceGeneral Sir George Nugent, 1st Bt. (1757-1849), Commander-in-Chief, India, 1811-13, & Maria, Lady Nugent.Thence by descent via the Nugents to the current owners.PublishedA. L. Cohen (ed.), Lady Nugent's East India Journal, Oxford 2014, pl. 4.A close copy by an Indian artist working in Calcutta of an original painting, dated 1801, by Captain Crockett, an Engineers officer, now in the British Museum (1946,0624.4). The inscription on the reverse of this painting reads: Drawn by Capt Crockatt Engineers Bengal Establishment 1801 - The officer represented is Captain Lyons - Infantry Bengal Establishment. As a depiction of the lives of East India Company officers and their relations with Indians, this painting must rank alongside the well-known depictions of, for instance, John Wombwell smoking a hookah (Lucknow, 1790), William Fullarton (Murshidabad or Patna, 1760), Zoffany's painting of the Impey family with Indian musicians, the Delhi painting of Sir David Ochterlony, or Colonel Polier watching a nautch, by Tilly Kettle. or in a more female context, the two paintings of Lady Impey with her Calcutta household (illustrated in W. Dalrymple (ed.), Forgotten Masters: Indian Painting for the East India Company, London 2019, p. 49; or in S. C. Welch, Room For Wonder: Indian Painting during the British Period, 1760-1880, New York 1978, p. 23, fig. 3).Despite the British presence, and the British artist of the original, it is the group of Indians who are the main focus, in all their variety: from the senior servants with their silver chauris, the presumably middle-ranking under-butlers, such as the figure on the left who stands demurely with his arms folded across his stomach; the female figures with their green robes; the musicians; and the sepoy cradling his musket lurking in the doorway at the back.Lady Nugent, at least, seems to have felt a similar fascination on her arrival in Calcutta and afterwards, impressed by the numbers of servants (even for someone who was, unlike us, used to having servants), their varied livery, and their manner towards the English. On visiting General Hewett's house in January 1812, she noted:We found Sepoy Grenadier Sentinels at the gate; they are fine looking men, and I like their dress extremely - it has a very military appearance. The yard in front of the house was filled with servants [...] The footmen are called Kitmatgars - we dress ours in white, with scarlet sashes, or rather white and scarlet mixed or twisted together - scarlet bands to their turbans - and silver crescents in front - this dress is really very pretty. [This livery can be seen in lot 173, Lady Nugent in her palanquin]. The servants were all drawn up in order, and when we got out of the carriage they all made salaams down to the ground. The whole of the party attended us into the house - the inferiors arranging themselves in the hall, the superiors attending us up to the drawing room. (Cohen, p. 37).Once they had started on their tour up-country, she recorded that 'Sir George and I could not help laughing at the number of our attendants; we were surrounded by silver stick men and kitmagars, the soubadar or native officer of the escort was at a distance, and the havildar, or sergeant, waited a small distance behind him' (Cohen, p. 74) - this on the bank of a river in the middle of nowhere. She was also struck by the importance in Indian society of the hookah, 'which are indeed an extraordinary sort of things'. Early on she commented that 'neither Sir George nor myself find the smell very disagreeable, or insupportable [...] 'I have, however, set my face against young men smoking, as it is in reality an odious custom.' Not long after this, she tried it herself, at the suggestion of another English woman. 'I tried to smoke it, as she assured me it was only a composition of spices, but I did it awkwardly, swallowing the smoke, and the consequence was I coughed all night'. Mubarak-ud-Daula, Nawab of Murshidabad (1770-93), seated in durbar with Sir John Hadley D'Oyly, British Resident from 1780 to 1785 Murshidabad, circa 1795-1805gouache on paper 350 x 530 mm.Footnotes:ProvenanceGeneral Sir George Nugent, 1st Bt. (1757-1849), Commander-in-Chief, India, 1811-13, & Maria, Lady Nugent.Thence by descent via the Nugents to the current owners. For a very similar painting of the same subject in the Victoria and Albert Museum, see M. Archer, Company Paintings: Indian Paintings of the British Period, London 1992, pp. 78-80, no. 42(i), illus. She comments that the group of nine paintings of festivals and durbars in the V&A were probably based on originals by the British artist George Farington (1752-88), who was active in Murshidabad for a few years before his death there. There is also a comparable group now in the British Library (Add. Or. 3220-36) collected by Lt. Col. James Chicheley Hyde, who served in Bengal from 1806 to 1837. Archer notes that the artist(s) of such works were probably selling their work in both Murshidabad and in Calcutta, which corresponds with Lady Nugent's accounts of acquiring paintings. Our painting differs from the V&A work in the relative paleness of its palette, and there are minor differences in the background, though the essentials (figures on elephants, the buildings to left and right) are present in both. The same too tall figures appear as well, in the foreground, to the left and right of the front canopy poles. These figures were distinguishing characteristics in a story recounted by Archer (op. cit., p. 80): George Farington was commissioned by D'Oyly to paint him in durbar with the Nawab, and a smaller version was also made for a subsequent Resident, Robert Pott. D'Oyly's painting was sent back to London after Farington's death, but D'Oyly (then having run out of money) denied commissioning it. However, three artists (including Thomas Daniell) confirmed that this was indeed the case, and made reference to the too tall figures in the Pott version. The feature seems therefore to have made its way into the versions made by Murshidabad artists.Sir John Hadley D'Oyly had arrived in Bengal with the Company in 1770, aged sixteen, and had become a great friend of Warren Hastings, being promoted to the post of Persian Translator to the Board of Governors, and eventually to Resident at Murshidabad. William Hickey's frank memoirs commented that the post was 'considered as the most lucrative office in the Company's service, the whole stipend or salary allocated by Government to the Nawab passing through such Resident's hands, in which channel a considerable portion of it always stuck to his fingers'. For a portrait of him by John Thomas Seton, circa 1784, and discussion of his career, see M. Archer, India and British Portraiture, 1770-1825, London 1979, pp. 116-117, and no. 74.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: PP This lot is owned by a private individual. The hook-swinging festival (charak puja) Murshidabad, late 18th/early 19th Centurypen and ink and watercolour on watermarked paper, black margin rules and black border, reverse inscribed Churkh Pooja in a contemporary hand, inscribed in pencil in nagari script 475 x 740 mm.Footnotes:ProvenanceGeneral Sir George Nugent, 1st Bt. (1757-1849), Commander-in-Chief, India, 1811-13, & Maria, Lady Nugent.Thence by descent via the Nugents to the current owners. The hook-swinging ritual (known as charak puja in Bengal) was a form of devotion to the female deity Mari-amma. The devotee would be beaten on the back by a priest until the flesh there was numbed, at which point metal hooks would be passed through the flesh. He would then be raised on the gibbet and swung around, taking care not to show any pain and even to shout and laugh. For a more stiffly-painted example of the subject, see S. C. Welch, Room for Wonder: Indian Painting during the British Period, 1760-1880, New York 1978, pp. 54-55, no. 16.Lady Nugent found the ritual shocking, witnessing it after her return to Calcutta:Easter Sunday. Awoke at daylight, by all sorts of noises, this being the commencement of one of the great Hindoo holidays, called the Churruk-Poojah. I suppose this is the god of the spring season, as Doorga Poojah means the goddess of the Autumn. To church early...I could not help thinking these Pagan noises were a real profanation of the day, but it can't be helped; the native customs must not be interfered with, yet it is most unfortunate that this holiday should this year fall on Easter Sunday. The next day:We have been to the Poojah, and a most disgusting sight it is; and melancholy indeed to think, that human beings should so torment and degrade themselves, from a false idea of religion.... First, as in all holiday meetings, there were groups of dancing people, that is, parties of men, with very little clothing on, squatting on the ground, with each his hookah, and looking at the evolutions of Nautch women, which is one of their greatest amusements...Groups of opium eaters, sitting in a circle, and looking like drunken skeletons - such miserable wretches I never saw before, and it is impossible to describe! Then, there were poor sinners, doing penance in various ways. But the most shocking sight is the swinging; this is done by the unfortunate creature having iron hooks passed through the sinews of his back, and by these he is suspended to a high pole. The wretched man... appeared at first to be in torture, for he drew up his legs, as if in great pain, catching at the rope by which he was suspended, as if to relieve himself; but, soon after, he was apparently at ease, and went round and round, as fast as possible, distributing flowers, &c, to the mob, who all scrambled for them, as sacred relics. It seems these swinging people, like many others who do penance, are hired by the priests, who make vows, and have the option of performing by proxy. One swinging man let fly a white pigeon, and he is most fortunate indeed who catches it [...] As I turned, with horror and disgust, from the wretch who was swinging, to Sir E. East's and Sir G's great amusement, a man thrust his head in my face, with his tongue out, and a great iron rod passed through it. I started back, and he made signs for a rupee, which was given him.. The hook-swinging festival (charak puja), attributed to the artist Sewak Ram Patna, early 19th Centurywatercolour on paper, black margin rules, pale yellow border 370 x 495 mm.Footnotes:ProvenanceGeneral Sir George Nugent, 1st Bt. (1757-1849), Commander-in-Chief, India, 1811-13, & Maria, Lady Nugent.Thence by descent via the Nugents to the current owners. The artist Sewak Ram, who came from Murshidabad, was working in Patna by around 1790, until circa 1826. His style is quite distinctive when set against other Company School work, with a more European approach to modelling, as well as a tendency to favour depictions of large, closely-packed crowds, although he seems to have had more than one manner of painting (see lot 171 in this sale for a different approach and palette). Two large procession scenes by Sewak Ram were in the exhibition held at Bonhams recently (In Good Company: an exhibition of fine Indian Paintings under the influence of the Raj from a private collection, 9th-17th January 2020, nos. 14 and 15).For the hook-swinging festival, see the note to lot 176. The difference in the portrayal of the subject between the two is notable: Sewak Ram packs his crowd tightly in the centre of the composition, with a receding effect in his habitual way, and his setting is a more urban, even suburban one; while that of lot 176 is more pastoral, a more private celebration of the rite in the Bengal countryside. We can perhaps see why Sewak Ram's painting might have appealed to Lady Nugent in a passage from her diary relating a procession in Farrukhabad in February 1813, in which she noted that 'the mob had really the most picturesque appearance, for the different coloured turbans looked like a bed of tulips' (Cohen, op. cit., p. 228).The Nugents went through Patna on their tour in July and August 1812, and again on the return journey in 1813. On the earlier date, she records that she 'arranged the drawings I bought at Patna' (p. 106); and on the later: 'All the morning crowded with visitors, tradesmen, &c. Bought a great many drawings' (p. 272).This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: PP This lot is owned by a private individual. The famous sheep-eating fakir, Jurah Geer Berah Geer Calcutta, circa 1800watercolour on paper, black inner margin rules, yellow outer border, inscription from reverse glued to backboard A Hindoo eating a whole sheep alive 335 x 505 mm.Footnotes:ProvenanceGeneral Sir George Nugent, 1st Bt. (1757-1849), Commander-in-Chief, India, 1811-13, & Maria, Lady Nugent.Thence by descent via the Nugents to the current owners. The fact that several depictions exist of this bizarre figure and his macabre rite (and/or performance) is testament to the fascination he held for the British in India. We might compare the interest shown in 'Mr Flowery Man', a fakir well known in Delhi (actually Sardhaj, a Brahmin from Gokal), who wore a towering headdress made of flowers. Some of the British took a more scholarly approach to Indian religions: while the meaning of the ritual remains obscure, it is thought that the fakir was a devotee (bhakta) of Vishnu, emulating the boar (one of the god's avatars) by disembowelling with his mouth). But inevitably this figure must have become an object of interest purely because of his oddness, and the Nugents were clearly no exception to this. Early in her time in Calcutta, in a letter to Lady Temple (Cohen, p. 362), Lady Nugent wrote: 'I am making great preparations for a journal and intend to get a person to make drawings for me of anything curious'. Just outside Monghir, she noted in her diary that 'There were two fakiers, in green dresses, covered with garlands, their faces daubed with all sorts of colours, and spiral feathers in their turbans. I have two in my collection of drawings, exactly like them'. (Cohen, p. 98).He seems to have been attracting attention from the late 18th Century: a Major-General Hardwicke watched him at Fategarh on 3rd March 1796, and gave a lecture on the subject to the Royal Asiatic Society in 1832, later published and illustrated with a lithograph after 'original sketches made on the spot by a native artist'. He later presented a oil painting to the Society, perhaps used at the lecture. Other British gentlemen saw the feat at Lucknow, and Indian artists produced various versions at Murshidabad and Calcutta for British consumption. A version dated Calcutta, circa 1800 is in the V&A (see M. Archer, Company Paintings, pp. 82-83, no. 46, with the same seven stages as our painting, but with a key and other inscriptions. Other examples appear in S. C. Welch, Room for Wonder, p. 44, no. 11 (from the collection of James Nathaniel Rind), ascribed to Farrukhabad, circa 1785-90, and another in the Kasturbhai Lalbhai Collection, Ahmedabad. The British Library possesses another (illustrated in W. Dalrymple (ed.), Forgotten Masters: Indian Painting for the East India Company, London 2019, p. 134, no. 75), and there was a Lucknow example (depicting the third stage only) as part of a set of 'occupations' (see J. P. Losty, 'The sheep eater of Fategarh', South Asian Studies, 4 (1988), pp. 1-11); for a Lucknow painting of circa 1810, showing the fakir approaching the sheep menacingly, see Christie's, Visions of India, 5th June 1996, lot 6.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: PP This lot is owned by a private individual. Guru Nanak at Mecca, by Bhai Ram Singh Punjab, late 19th Centurypen and ink on paper, verso sketches of a man's head and a minaret or tower 255 x 340 mm.Footnotes:ProvenancePrivate UK collection: acquired as part of the artist's archive, directly from his descendants. The scene, and others from the life of Guru Nanak, appears in illustrated Janamsakhi manuscripts, though it was often painted as a scene in itself. Guru Nanak travelled throughout India and elsewhere for 24 years, spreading his message. In one of the scenes the Guru is depicted at Mecca (in the course of a journey through the Middle East made between 1517-22) being rebuked by an imam for lying with his feet facing the Qa'ba. The Guru replied 'In which direction does God not live?' Alternatively, he asked to be moved so that he faced the place where there was no God; at each attempt he found that he was still facing the Qa'ba; thus the story illustrates how God is everywhere. For another depiction of the scene, see the sale in these rooms, Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 2nd October 2012, lot 206; and Christie's, Islamic and Indian Manuscripts and Works on Paper, 23rd April 2012, lot 319.Bhai Ram Singh Ramgarhia was a Sikh carpenter and architect in Amritsar who worked with Lockwood Kipling in Lahore. He later became Principal of the Mayo School of Art, and amongst his works were the Lahore Museum, Khalsa College, Amritsar and the Saragarhi Memorial Gurdwara. He had travelled to London with Kipling where he worked with him to design the Durbar Room at Osborne House, Isle of Wight, the summer house of Queen Victoria. He lived in London for some time and was invited by British nobility to design and make mouldings for various panels at their country houses. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

He produced a number of intimate sketches of sepoys, often in places undocumented by camera, such as the inside of camps and billets. Seventy of these sketches, including the present lot, were reproduced as prints in British and Indian Troops in Northern France, 70 War Sketches by Paul Sarrut, 1914 - 1915, Delépine, Arras, prior to 1920. The publication was limited to 250 copies, issue no. 40 of which is retained at the British Library as part of the India Office Library (cat. no. BLL01007259929). The 15th Ludhiana Sikhs were an infantry regiment in the British Indian Army who were active between the years 1846-1922. During this time they were part of numerous battles that included the Battles of Ahmed Khel, Kadahar, Tofrek and Sakin, the expedition of Chitral, the Campaign of Tirah and World War I. In the First World War (1914-1918) they served on the Western Front in France as part of the 8th (Jullundur) Brigade, 3rd (Lahore) Division and in Egypt in the Mesopotamia Campaign as as part of the Western Frontier Force. They were moved to Egypt in late 1915 to fight against the tribal sect of Muslims led by Sayed Ahmed, known as the Senussi. The Western Frontier Force consisted of an infantry brigade containing partially trained battalions, the 2/7th and 2/8th Middlesex, the 15th Ludhiana Sikhs, the 6th Royal Scots and the cavalry brigade containing three British Yeomanry regiments. The 15th Ludhiana Sikhs were given the first mission against the Senussi on 11th December 1915, where they were tasked with breaking the ranks of the enemy at Duwwar Hussein. The 15th Sikhs proved to be vital for the Western Frontier force. Their results were exemplary and they were given the honour 'Egypt 1915-17.' After World War I the Indian government reformed the army moving them from single batallion regiments to multi batallion regiments. The 15th Ludhiana Sikhs were now known as the 2nd Batallion/2nd Sikh Regiment. Finally, after Independence in 1947 the regiment was allocated to the new Indian Army. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: PP This lot is owned by a private individual. *Grayson Perry RA (b.1960) 'ALIEN BABY' Glazed ceramic, stamped and numbered to the reverse '9', from a series of 12, executed 2018 27 x 17cm 'Alien Baby' was created during his time making the BAFTA nominated 'Rites of Passage', a four episode series exploring the topics of Death, Marriage, Birth and Coming of Age. Perry travelled the world exploring rituals across different cultures before returning home to England, to discuss his findings with British families, drawing parallels with seminal moments in their own lives and helping to devise secular rituals to help them make sense of the landmark moments they were experiencing. Episode three, Birth, followed Essex-based couple Abbie and Laura and their sons Caspar and Ezra who, after being born at 26 weeks, were cared for over 100 days by the neonatal care team at Chelmsford’s Broomfield Hospital. During his visit to the unit the artist noticed the serene calm of the ward, noting the secure environment felt itself ‘like floating around in amniotic fluid.’ He described witnessing the slow motion modern miracle that sees the babies being nurtured into the world by the dedicated team of nurses who help them survive and thrive against all odds. He sees the nurses as the crew of a spaceship, employing modern technology with a sympathetic touch, the twinkling lights of the monitors reminiscent of the light-up controls of the flight deck of a spaceship. ‘It feels otherworldly like we are on board a spaceship drifting through inner space on our way to the time when they [the babies] should have come’. Inspired by this cosmic scene and believing there to be a need for the NHS to be ritualised as one of the pillars of modern society, Grayson produced a range of 12 'Alien Babies', each a celebration of the NHS, the technology and, above all, the humanity of the neonatal nurses. The works, each unique and executed in pottery with a metallic gilt glaze, were gifted by the artist to every member of the neonatal team at the Broomfield, as well as to the couples featured in the show. He states ‘each sculpture represents the spirit of all the little lives bought into the earth by the nursing team’. It seems only fitting that this sculpture comes to auction to help finance the IVF treatment that will enable Abbie and Laura to continue to grow their family. *Artist's Resale Right may apply to this lot.
Edward Bawden RA (1903-1989) When Bawden and his friend Eric Ravilious moved to Essex in the 1930s, they gathered a group of fellow artists around them, creating an artists' community centred around Great Bardfield. The following four lots were among a dozen drawings created by Bawden for use in ‘The English Scene’, a diary and notebook published by textiles firm Morton Sundour Fabrics. At the height of the vogue for the group of figurative artists who lived and worked in and around Great Bardfield, Bawden was invited to illustrate the diary for a number of years in the early to mid 1950s. These date from the edition published in 1955, the year before Bawden was elected as a full Royal Academician. Interest in Bawden’s work and his life in Great Bardfield (and later in Saffron Walden) has risen again in the past decades. Alongside rising prices for his prints, paintings and drawings, the Morton Sundour Diary and Notebook was republished by the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2012. *Edward Bawden RA (1903-1989) 'MORRIS DANCING AT THAXTED' Signed l.r. and inscribed u.r., pen and ink 27 x 42cm Provenance: The Estate of Lady Elizabeth Cavendish CVO. *Artist's Resale Right may apply to this lot.
*Cedric Morris (1889-1982) GYPSY QUEEN CARAVANS IN A SUSSEX MEADOW Signed, dedicated 'To Phyllis...' and dated 1927 l.r., oil on canvas 46 x 59cm, unframed The present lot is an early work from 1927, and painted by Morris for his own pleasure. The dedication in the bottom right-hand corner of the painting 'to Phyllis from Cedric 1927' is to the vendor’s mother Phyllis Pitcairn Gage-Brown, who was a childhood friend of Paul Odo Cross, the son of an American heiress and a close friend of Cedric at that time. (See Morris’s portrait of Odo-Cross, 1925, National Museum of Wales). Gage-Brown owned one of the caravans that appear in the picture and Odo Cross, who was known by the nickname 'Bud', the other. It had been the norm for the group to 'play' at camping together at Socknersh Manor, the East Sussex estate owned by Cross’s mother. Cross’s gypsy caravan later moved with him to Tidcombe Manor in Wiltshire where he lived with the horticulturalist Angus Wilson. The vendor remembers seeing it when he cycled there from Marlborough for tea in the late 1940s. It was Wilson who first introduced Morris to the possibilities of iris breeding in 1934. Irises would become his great passion; while painting and teaching, he cultivated more than ninety new named varieties, many carrying the prefix 'Benton'. At the time the picture was painted, Morris was working from a studio at Great Ormond Street and had joined the Seven and Five Society of London painters and sculptors. *Artist's Resale Right may apply to this lot.
