Concorde End of an Era Mike Bannister Signed Limited Edition Print. Only 250 issued signed by Captain Mike Bannister who flew the last flight and Artist Ivan Berryman. Stunning Limited Edition Print Concorde End of a Era 16 x 12 inch size. Ending an historic chapter in Aviation History. Taken from Concorde Original Painting acrylics on canvas By Ivan Berryman Commemorating the final landing in 2003 20 x 16 inch stunning image of the iconic plane. Ending an historic chapter in Aviation History. The final transatlantic flight, ending 27 years of supersonic history, carried 100 celebrities from New York and touched down at 1605 BST. As it did so, a huge cheer went up from the thousands of people gathered by the runway on a specially-built grandstand. Two other Concorde flights had already landed a few minutes earlier, one carrying competition winners on a flight from Edinburgh, and the other completing a trip for invited guests around the Bay of Biscay. Union Jacks All three aircraft taxied to the BA engineering base, the crews hanging out of the cockpit windows and waving Union Jacks to the crowds. Actress Joan Collins, who has flown Concorde about 10 times and was on board the flight from New York, said the end of the era was tragic. The first time I ever flew Concorde was a bit of a white knuckle ride. I am more used to it now, its so wonderful to make the journey in three and a half hours, she said. British Airways has decided to retire the famous aircraft because it is no longer profitable. Sadness and celebration Concordes running costs have been spiralling at a time when ticket sales were dwindling in the wake of a catastrophic crash near Paris Charles de Gaulle airport three years ago in which 113 people died. British Airways chief executive officer Rod Eddington said there was a mixture of sadness and celebration about the retirement. It is a wonderful plane, an icon, but its time has come, he said. Its an old plane, it doesnt look it, but it was designed in the 50s and built in the 60s. The plane, which cost passengers £9,000 a ticket, reached 1,350mph 2,172 kph and 60,000 feet 18,288 metres over the Atlantic Ocean during its final flight. BA and Air France, who worked jointly on developing the aircraft, made an announcement on the retirement in April. The French Concordes final flight was in May. Good Condition. A circa 1949 Austin Pathfinder Special pedal car, British racing green livery with bonnet straps, pneumatic tyres, three wheel hub caps behind the seat, to include 'Austin Pedal Cars' by David WhyleyNotes: A young boy from a village near Lichfield, Staffordshire was given the car as a present in 1949. Known as the Pathfinder special, the design is based on the Jamieson OHV 750 Austin Seven racing car of the late 1930's made by the Austin Motor Company Ltd. The J40 series (Junior 40), were constructed in a special factory in Bargoed in South Wales which was set up with government funds for disabled Welsh miners to find a new interest in life.Opening in 1949 and running as not for profit purely for the disabled miners, the factory was named The Austin Junior Car Factory and it utilised offcuts of sheet metal from the Longbridge Austin factory and were constructed in the same way as the motor cars themselves. The pedal cars were regarded the best pedal car on the market at the time and incorporated features such as working headlights, a horn, pneumatic Dunlop tyres and an opening bonnet. The Pathfinder cost a staggering £25 with tax and an average working man would have had to save two to three weeks full wages to purchase one of these fine machines. The cars were cherished by some of the luckiest children of the time and were exportedabroad including America. The factory sadly ceased trading in 1971.The car in question was saved from the scrap heap and restored to its former glory by the current and original owner who has decided to find a new home for it. Condition Report: Fully restored to a high standard by the current owner.

Wells (H.G.). Little Wars. A Game for Boys, 1st edition, 1913, 19 photographs, marginal drawings by J.R. Sinclair, one photograph with piece torn away, some leaves detached with light soiling and spotting, front hinge breaking, original red cloth, inset illustration to upper cover, spine rubbed with some fading, preserved in a custom made black cloth foldover box, small 4to Graham Greene and Hugh Carelton Greene's copy. Signed twice by a juvenile Graham Greene in pencil to front pastedown, and two ink annotations, presumably by Graham Greene to page 46, providing two extra rules for the game. In the first volume of his autobiography A Sort of Life, Graham Greene recounts this copy of Little Wars: "My favourite toys in those days were a clockwork train and lead soldiers... When I was a bit older (about twelve) I would play with Hugh, who was six, an elaborate war game based on H.G. Wells's book Little Wars. In the holidays we were able to use the big tables in the School House dining hall. We would push two tables together and lay out a whole countryside. There were roads marked in chalk and cottages and forests of twigs and rivers which had to be crossed. One game might last a week, with perhaps two hundred men on either side, quick raids by cavalry and slow advances by infantry, measured on lengths of string, melees which led to capture of prisoners, and bombardments with the two 4.2 naval guns. It was 1916, but war was still glamorous to a child". The poor condition of the book shows the extent to which the Greene brothers played with it, with Graham Greene's extra rules 7 and 8 in ink at foot of page 46, "A gun may not fire if there is more than 2 men of its opponents side within 3" of it" and "One can carry two sand bags moving half his move [and] one [sandbag moving] the whole of his move". There are pencil scores from the brothers games to the rear endpapers, under the headings H and G (unsurprisingly the elder Graham always seemed to win), together with a few juvenile drawings which appear to be the six-year old Hugh's work. Powell (Anthony). Agents and Patients, 1st edition, 1936, 3 pp. advertisements at end, slight toning at front, original pink cloth, spine faded, slight lean, 8vo Inscribed in green ink by the author to front endpaper: "John Betjeman gave Roland Young this book in my presence. It came from my agents, Anthony Powell, Oct. 20th 1937". The agent's (A.M. Heath) rubber address stamp beneath the inscription. Roland Young (1887-1953) was a British actor who had a successful Hollywood film career, and at that time in 1937 Powell had tried (and failed) to gain employment in America as a script writer and was presumably meeting Young to seek information and advice about the Hollywood film industry. Additionally there is a photocopy of a letter, dated 19 October 1937, from John Betjeman to Anthony Powell, on Shell-Mex and B.P. headed paper, carefully declining most of his ideas for marketing the Shell-Mex brand and writing "Roland Young has said that he cannot let us know until tomorrow morning whether he can lunch or not, but anyhow you and I will lunch and let's hope that Roland Young will come too." *Opera. Parisian Opera Singers, Paris: Stanislas-D‚sir‚ Avril et Cie, circa 1865, fifty-two playing cards, comprising four suits of thirteen (national suits), each with ten pip cards, and three full-length photographic court cards, plain versos, 97 x 64mm (3.75 x 2.5ins), contained in lower portion of original card box (lacking base of box and pull-off lid) A rare set of operatic playing cards in very good condition. The BibliothŠque Nationale de France list this set, but have only ten of the fifty-two cards. The court cards are photographs of famous 19th century French opera singers. The portraits were taken by renowned French lithographer and photographer Adolphe Bilordeaux (1807-1872) who was one of the pioneers in the use of salt print technique on waxed paper. Gouache was added to the cards to highlight the suit symbols as colour photography was not then possible. These cards are reminiscent of the fashionable costume packs made by Gilbert and others around this time. Avril et Cie was only active in Paris between 1856 and 1868, after which it was declared bankrupt. The British Museum has a deck by Avril, of English historical characters, with decorative aces identical to ours (Schreiber 67). The opera singers represented include Louis Gueymard, Pauline Lauters, Charles Louis Puberaux and Marie Cico. (1)

*Prisoner of War. A complete deck of manuscript playing cards made by a French Prisoner of War, circa 1796, fifty-two hand-painted playing cards, comprising four suits of thirteen (French suits), each with ten pip cards, and three full-length court cards (jack, queen, king), forged ace of spades copying Hall's for 1789-1801, generally lightly dust-soiled and some rubbing in places, plain versos, 90 x 63mm (3.5 x 2.5ins), together with a visiting card giving details of provenance in old manuscript, contained in original green straight-grained roan box with pull-off lid See: The Playing-card, Journal of the International Playing-Card Society, Volume 34, No.3, January-March 2006, pp.216/17. A unique set of hand-made playing cards. Whilst bone playing cards made by French Prisoners of War appear on the market from time to time, we have not seen another deck painted on card. The manuscript note on the enclosed visiting card states: "Set hand-made Cards & Case made by French Prisoners of War at Porchester Castle in Napoleonic Wars. Given to [Mrs. J.R.G. Chick-Lucas(printed)]' Mother-in-Law (Mrs. George Lucas) by a very old Resident of Porchester whose father had been a Prison Official at the Castle. Date of Gift was well before 1886, & the Ancient Dame died soon after. Given to Walter F. Chevers by his loving sister Alianora Chick-Lucas for July 2 - 1940.' The address printed on the visiting card is 'Belle Vue Cottage, Brading, I of W'. Alianora (1870-1956), wife of James Robb Goodman Chick-Lucas, is buried at St. Mary's Church, Brading. Her brother, Walter Forsyth Chevers (1867-1948) was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. They were the children of Norman Chevers (1818-1886), Deputy Surgeon General of the Bengal Army, and his wife Emily Ann, and the family was known to have been residing at Sandown on the Isle of Wight in 1908. French Prisoners of War were kept at Portchester Castle, Hampshire, between 1793 and 1817, with more than 9,000 being held during this time. The late John Berry called this deck "a real 'find': very nicely done for a hand-made pack". Whilst the male court cards illustrate kings and warriors, the queens represent classical goddesses: the queen of clubs is Cirene, or possibly Diana (with crescent moon head-piece); the queen of diamonds represents Flora (with a garland of flowers); the queen of spades shows Pax, the goddess of peace (with a cornucopia in one hand and an olive branch in the other); and the queen of hearts also carries a cornucopia, but no other symbol to distinguish her from the many deities who are associated with the horn of plenty. Fine Fellow, that Mr. Tumble!'. The humourous tale is written as if by Mr. Tumble's horse, Dick, and the comical watercolours are skilfully executed. (a folder)

While writing the poems for what would become his first book 'Severn and Somme' he was wounded in the shoulder in April 1917. However, he returned to battle and continued to work on his book and composing music. He was gassed in September 1917 and sent to the Edinburgh War Hospital. His book was published in November 1917. Scott continued to champion Gurney's music and poetry throughout Gurney's mentally troubled life up until her own death in 1953. Scott helped Gurney deal with his doctors, made decisions about his care, took him on trips and provided financial support. After Gurney's death in 1937 she gained full control of his estate and their biographies are covered in Pamela Blevins, 'Ivor Gurney & Marion Scott: Song of Pain and Beauty' (2008).
