A rare Third Reich STAR GLOBE from German U-boat U-570, formerly on loan to Portsmouth Museum. German naval markings and held within original cage. Globe with lacquered card gores by Ernst Schotte & Co, Berlin. The black brass frame bears the stamp Nautische Werksatten GMBH Kiel 3063 and a Kriegsmarine eagle insignia with 'N 269'.These were used for navigation by German U-Boats generally reducing the time on the surface and thus making the submarine less vulnerable to detection and enemy attacks. 'Graf' or HMS Graph as she was named after she was captured was a German Type VIIC U-boat that the British Royal Navy captured during World War II. Commissioned as U-570 in Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine in mid-1941, she was attacked and captured on her first patrol. She was decommissioned from active service in February 1944 and was to be scrapped in the Clyde but she ran aground off the west coast of Islay and was abandoned. Other surviving relics from the boat include her typewriter, held by the museum at Bletchley Park.Provenance: From the collection of Lt.Cdr E.D.Norman who took command of U-570 in October 1941, after it had surrendered to an RAF Hudson aircraft south of Iceland in August, it was then renamed HMS Graph. U-570's cryptographic material had been ditched and many instruments smashed, but in a year's trials under Norman, Graph gave the Allies, priceless information about the construction, performance and weaponry of the standard Type VII U-boat. See earlier lot 275 for further details of Lt.Cdr E.D.Norman's career.

In the manner of Shoji Hamada - A rectangular slab vase from The Leach Pottery, with shallow collar neck, tenmoku glaze with sweeping brush work motifs in resist decoration, height 11.5cm, width 8.5cm.Provenance - This vase was purchased and owned by Gillian (Gill) Harrington who worked at the Leach Pottery on Kensington Church Walk in the early 1970s. Gill had originally worked for Bernard Stone at the Turret Bookshop which shared a space with The Leach Pottery. During her time working at The Turret Bookshop Gill became close friends with Sybil Hansen who worked for Leach at the Kensington Church Walk shop. From this friendship Gill began working at the shop covering shifts and selling the ceramics. Her daughter, who studied at St Mary Abbots School just down the road remembers sitting with her mother in the shop after school and also being taught how to pot by William (Bill) Marshall. Her diaries of the time make numerous mentions to her job at The Leach Pottery and her close friendship with both Sybil Hansen and Guy Worsdell. This piece and the other two examples were acquired by Gill at her time there.

Field Marshal Frederick Sleigh Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts VC signed note set with corner mounts into A4 biography page. On following the retreating enemy on 2 January 1858, at Khodagunge, he saw in the distance two Sepoys going away with a standard. Lieutenant Roberts put spurs to his horse, and overtook them just as they were about to enter a village. They immediately turned round, and presented their muskets at him, and one of the men pulled the trigger, but fortunately the caps snapped, and the standard-bearer was cut down by this gallant young officer, and the standard taken possession of by him. He also, on the same day, cut down another Sepoy who was standing at bay, with musket and bayonet, keeping off a Sowar. Lieutenant Roberts rode to the assistance of the horseman, and, rushing at the Sepoy, with one blow of his sword cut him across the face, killing him on the spot. Good Condition. Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret'Committee' table, model no. LC/PJ-TAT-14-B, designed for the Assembly and Administrative Buildings, Chandigarh, 1963-1964Teak-veneered wood, teak.74 x 362 x 137 cmFootnotes:ProvenanceThe Assembly, ChandigarhLiteratureEric Touchaleaume and Gerald Moreau, Le Corbusier Pierre Jeanneret, The Indian Adventure, Design-Art-Architeture, Paris, 2010, pp. 246-47, 582A UNIQUE HARMONY by architect John O'SheaBuilding the future'It was a matter of occupying the plain. The geometrical event was, in truth, a sculpture of the intellect ... It was a tension ... a battle of space, fought within the mind. Arithmetic, texturique,1 geometrics: it would all be there when the whole was finished' (Le Corbusier, Modulor 2).Following Indian Independence and the resulting partition of India and Pakistan in 1947, a new administrative capital was needed for the Indian Punjab. Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru proclaimed that the building of the new city of Chandigarh was to be 'symbolic of the freedom of India, unfettered by the traditions of the past ... an expression of the nation's faith in the future'. The commission was originally awarded to the American architect Albert Mayer, but after he withdrew from the project, Le Corbusier was approached to work on a masterplan for the new city. Here was the opportunity the great architect had been waiting for since the 1920s: to construct an entire city and thus fully realize his thesis on urban design. After complex negotiations, Le Corbusier agreed to accept the commission on condition that his cousin, and collaborator since 1922, Pierre Jeanneret serve as project architect: 'In 1922 I joined forces with my cousin, Pierre Jeanneret. With loyalty, optimism, initiative and persistence, with good humour ... and in league with the resistance forces of the age we set to work. Two men who understand each other are worth three who stand alone. By never pursuing lucrative goals, by refusing to make compromises, but, rather, being in love with our passionate quest, which is what makes life worth living, we have managed to occupy the entire field of architecture, from the minutest detail to the vast plans of a city' (Le Corbusier, Design 3).The team had a colossal task: to deliver the masterplan, which included infrastructure, landscaping and buildings for uses related to education, government, healthcare and recreation, as well as housing for all of the city's new inhabitants. Le Corbusier saw himself as the 'Spiritual Director' of the project and appointed himself two main tasks: shaping the masterplan and designing the Capitol Complex, the group of buildings dedicated to governance. Jeanneret's role was to run the site office at Chandigarh, overseeing the design and construction of the city as an integrated whole. The MasterplanFaced with the challenge of planning a new city for 500,000 people on a vast rural site, Le Corbusier turned to geometry and his recently patented invention, the Modulor, a proportional system for design based on a set of measurements – relating to the 'golden section' (a ratio of approximately 1:618) – taken from a 'universal' human form, Modulor Man. 'On the 28th March, 1951, at Chandigarh, at sunset, we had set off in a jeep across the still empty site of the capital – Varma, Fry, Pierre Jeanneret and myself. Never had spring been so lovely, the air so pure after a storm the day before, the horizons so clear, the mango trees so gigantic and magnificent. We were at the end of our task (the first): we had created the city (the town plan). I had noticed then that I had lost the box of the Modulor, of the only Modulor strip in existence, made by Soltan in 1945, which had not left my pocket in six years ... A grubby box splitting at the edge.4 During that last visit of the site before my return to Paris, the Modulor had fallen from the jeep onto the soil of the fields that were to disappear to make way for the capital. It is there now, in the very heart of the place, integrated in the soil. Soon it will flower in all the measurements of the first city of the world to be organized all of a piece in accordance with the harmonious scale' (Le Corbusier, Modulor 2).The principles of Albert Mayer's original plan for Chandigarh that aligned with Le Corbusier's theories on urban planning were retained: differentiated zones for civic functions, with residential, industrial, business and governance activities separated by a circulatory transport system. The most radical of Le Corbusier's departures from Mayer's plan was the implementation of an ordered rectilinearity to the masterplan grid. This ordering was governed by the dimensions of a residential sector, a basic unit of 800 x 1200 meters derived from his mathematical system. Each of these sectors was designed as a self-sufficient neighborhood for living, working and leisure, and whose dimensions meant a person could walk to its centre from any point within ten minutes. The sectors were subdivided into 'villages' of around 150 houses – the size of a typical Punjabi village. At Chandigarh, the polemic plans of Le Corbusier's early speculations are tempered by the realities of the site and local context. The iconic towers of the utopian model are replaced with low-slung residential superblocks, and the traffic systems are designed to accommodate native modes of transport including rickshaws and camels. The Capitol ComplexWe are in a plain; the chain of the Himalayas locks the landscape magnificently to the north. The smallest buildings appear tall and commanding. The government buildings are conjugated with one another in a strict ratio of heights and sizes ...' (Le Corbusier, Modulor 2).Le Corbusier envisioned the city as an organism and articulated the layout of Chandigarh accordingly. The Capitol Complex was analogous to the head, the commercial centre to the heart; the university and industrial areas at the city's peripheries were conceived as the limbs, and the green spaces the lungs, with everything connected by the 'arteries' of the transport network. A Complete Work of Art'I say it with pride. Finally, here at 67 years of age ... I was able to erect an architecture which fulfils day to day functions, but which leads to jubilation' (Le Corbusier, Sketchbook 3). The Chandigarh project was Le Corbusier's most important commission, a rare opportunity to create a Gesamtkunstwerk: a 'total work of art' encompassing masterplan, neighborhood layout, landscaping, construction, interiors and furnishings. In the very fabric of the city, and at every scale, lie Le Corbusier 's two great inspirations and disciplines: geometry and symbolism. The arithmetical ratios of the Modulor ensure a harmonious relationship between elements, but it is at the intimate human scale of Chandigarh's furniture, its interior 'equipment', that we can most directly experience the exactitudes and harmony of elegant proportions. The Committee TableThe other great source of Le Corbusier's inspiration was symbolism. Le Corbusier often distilled his design philosophy into elemental symbols. The recurring forms found in the architect's art and buildings were often inspired or directly generated by metaphor, symbol or figurative reference. The enamel-clad doors that form the entra... For Military Cross group see Plate 2 £1000-1500 Note:JohnAndrewBethell-Fox, Nottinghamshire Yeomanry Sherwood Rangers, Middle East (Egypt and Libya) Military Cross, London Gazette 11.03.1943. Recommendation states: 7th Armd Div, 30th Corps “In the action at Agheila on the 14th Dec. 42 Lt. Bethel-Fox (sic) was in command of the right hand flank troop of the Crusader Squadron, during the whole of this day he showed the highest initiative, courage and good soldierly qualities in his movements against the enemy. During this period he lost no opportunity in inflicting casualties upon the enemy’s vehicles and personnel, without losing a single tank in the afternoon, having seen what he thought to be a movement of enemy tanks around his right flank, he moved forward, destroyed two tanks, and then seeing an Anti Tank Gun in action on the far side of a ridge, engaged and destroyed it in the face of heavy fire from this and other guns in the vicinity. During this period his tank was hit many times. On his return, seeing that the track of another Crusader had been split, and the tank itself under heavy shell and machine gun fire, he went alongside, himself adjusted the tow rope and pulled it out of action. At last light, when getting out of his tank on entering close leaguer, he was wounded by enemy shell fire. This officer’s conduct during the day is but another example of the courage shown by him in the battle for the Sidi Rahman Track on 3 Nov 42 on which occasion he was also wounded. I consider that Lieut. Bethel-Fox, on this, as on previous occasions, showed great initiative, fine leadership and complete disregard for his personal safety.” signed by Montgomery. The Sidi Rahman Track was part of the Second Battle of El Alamein; the action at El-Agheila took place as part of Rommel’s rearguard action following his El Alamein defeat. On 6th June 1944 Bethell-Fox was with the Sherman tanks of A Squadron during the D-Day invasion of Normandy with the 8th Armoured Brigade, landing on Gold Beach, Arromanches, from where they supported the push to capture Bayeux. By 8th June they were at Pt 103 above St Pierre. Bethell-Fox went on foot with his “Great Pal” Captain Keith Douglas, (the celebrated WWII Poet) to ascertain enemy positions and movements around the area. The following day they again left their tanks on their own initiative for further recconaissance but after arriving at a stream they were fired on by enemy machine guns. Captain Douglas, who had often harboured negative thoughts of his own mortality, became “paralised with fear” and after a scramble they managed to get back to Pt 103, however, shortly after this a shell burst took Douglas’s life. In 1944 Bethell-Fox wrote “Green Beaches” whilst recovering from wounds received at Normandy. Promotions: Lieut. R.A.C. May 1942; Captain 9th Lancers 22.11.1946; Major 22.11.1953.

An engraved light-baluster wine glassmid 18th CenturyThe rounded funnel bowl engraved with a thistle and the inscription 'NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSET' (no one wounds (touches) me with impunity), set on a tall slender teared multi-knopped stem incorporating a beaded inverted baluster, over a conical foot, 18cm high.Footnotes:Provenance: Bonhams sale, 21 May 2014, lot 80, where acquired by Peter LoleThe Peter Lole CollectionAlthough misspelt, the inscription is the motto of the Order of the Thistle. This Scottish Order of Chivalry, the perquisite of Scottish kings and high nobility, was linked to the Jacobite political movement. The Order of the Thistle was established in the late 17th century and revived by Queen Anne. Knights of the Order would have been appointed by the monarch, and it is possible that this glass was commissioned by one of them. A glass engraved with a thistle and the same motto was sold in these rooms, 2 June 2004, lot 95, and in The Scottish Sale, 23 August 2006, lot 482. Another glass with comparable engraving of a thistle and the same motto is in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, accession no. 1953-29-9.Peter Lole, in unpublished notes on this glass speculates that this glass is probably Dutch in origin and also engraved in Holland. He speculates that the glass was perhaps made for export, presumably to Scotland, or for a Scot resident in Holland or Northern Europe. This person might have been a Jacobite Knight of the Thistle or a Scot who wished to emphasize his adherence to the Stuart monarchy. In the first category there were at this time only two non-royal survivors, both coincidentally created knights in 1725 by James III & VIII: the troublesome James Murray, Earl of Dunbar, who died at Avignon in 1770 and George Keith, 10th Earl Marischal, who lived until 1778. Prince Charles is also a possible candidate. For a Scot who was not a Thistle Knight but who resided in Holland and was a committed and exiled Jacobite, Lord George Murray, who died at Medemblik in 1760 is also a possibility. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Ken Currie (British, born 1960)Boys Night Out signed, dated and inscribed 'Ken Currie 1988/Boys Night Out/oil on canvas 7'x9' (verso)oil on canvas274 x 213 cm. (107 7/8 x 83 7/8 in.)Footnotes:Currie was instrumental in establishing a monumental figurative tradition at Glasgow School of Art in the mid-later 80s. His work is highly political, and inspired by the social conditions in Glasgow during the period where it was losing its heavy industry. His paintings are choc-full of imagery, motifs and iconography of the west of Scotland.Currie was fascinated by the city's tradition of producing autodidactic working men, many of whom were political/trade unionists. Hence the motif of the books. This is echoed by the 'liberty' slogan on the hat, which is at odds with hoods/masks and costumes. Machismo of the shaved head, tattoos and instruments (overtones of marching and Orange/flute bands). Currie's studio in the Gallowgate meant he was very familiar with block bars of this type, and the heavy drinking culture of the area. The figures are menacing, particularly the posture of the central character who is depicted like an animal in pursuit. All of this is at odds with the bunting, neon and 'leisure' overtone of the title and setting. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Philip John Ouless (Jersey, 1817-1885), The paddle steamer "Superb" of Jersey. oil on canvas, signed and dated 1856 lower left, modern reproduction gilded frame with gadrooned sight edge and lamb's tongue ornament. 16 x 26in. (40.5 x 66cm.). * Provenance: Sotheby's, London, The Marine Sale, 6th November 2007, lot 135. £29,300 . ** Notes: The paddle steamer Superb was registered in Jersey in 1850 and was intended to carry passengers and cargo between the Channel Islands and France. Owned by Thomas Rose, a Jersey merchant, he was keen to embrace steam power as a method of propulsion for vessels being an enthusiast for innovation and progressive ideas. Sadly the Superb did not serve its owner very long. On 24th September 1850 she was wrecked on the Minquiers rocks south of Jersey. Her master, John Priaulx, had unwisely agreed to the request of his passengers to detour via the Minquiers to see the wreck of another Thomas Rose paddle steamer, the Polka, which had been lost a few days before on 17th September 1850. The son of a Jersey auctioneer, Philip John Ouless was born in St Helier in 1817. He was brought up at 8 Royal Square but sadly, when he was 19, his father died of cholera and his mother the year after. He went to study in Paris around this time and for ten years seems to have lived and worked in Paris and Jersey. It was while in Paris that he met his wife Caroline and they had their first child Henry. During these early years he produced mostly landscape and coastal views in watercolour and oils and he found a ready market among publishers who reproduced his views of Jersey and sold them as collections of prints to the increasing number of visitors to the island. The first of these was published by Philip Falle in 1840 titled the Scenic Beauties of the Island of Jersey. He also illustrated a number of books and derived an income from the sale of individual lithographs after major works such as his Gorey Races held on Grouville Common in 1849. He also recorded a number of events in the Island, particularly shipwrecks, for reproduction in engraved form for the Illustrated London News. To commemorate the visit of Queen Victoria to Jersey in 1846, he produced eleven watercolours, which were published in an album the following year. He was also commissioned to paint portraits. From the evidence of sketchbooks and studies recently discovered, Ouless made an extensive journey through the Rhine in the summer of 1845 and also made frequent visits to Brittany and Normandy between 1846-59. In 1847 the family returned to Jersey and settled at 53 Paradise Row, New Street where he advertised himself as a "portrait, landscape and marine painter". However, it was only after 1850 that he began his career as a ship portrait painter. Ouless's reputation for painting ship portraits quickly spread in the island and he received numerous commissions from ship owners and their masters for pictures of newly launched vessels, benefiting from the boom in shipbuilding during the 19th century. By the middle of the 18th century shipping provided the greatest source of wealth for the Island and patrons in the form of a powerful middle class of merchants and ship owners emerged. Although a few artists earned their living painting portraits most artists associated with Jersey in the 18th & 19th centuries were marine painters. Over the course of the 19th century over 700 vessels were built in Jersey and this provided the artist with ample opportunity for commissions. His reputation also spread outside the island and he attracted many commissions from ship owners on the mainland. Ouless usually showed the ship in profile and occasionally he produced pairs showing the ship in full sail on a bright day and another of the ship in rough weather. To meet the exacting demands of his patrons who were knowledgeable about the rigging of vessels, the set of the sails and other details Ouless put great emphasis on accuracy of observation. He also applied this rigour to his topographical views which today make them a reliable historical record of the island in the 19th century.

All funds raised from the purchase of this item will be used to support Oxfam's response to the coronavirus pandemic worldwide.A Head Full Of Dreams is the seventh studio album by Coldplay. It has sold over 7 million copies worldwide and was nominated for 'British Album of the Year' at the 2016 Brit Awards. This large collage was a joint collaboration between the artist Pilar Zeta and Coldplay. It was conceived and created during album recording sessions in the band's London studio. The collage was used for the album's cover art and accompanying booklet. It also featured as cover art for all of the album's singles and as screen visuals throughout the record-breaking 'A Head Full Of Dreams' tour. Pilar Zeta (B.1986) is an Argentinean art director, known of her surrealist ideology and experience working with music labels to create bespoke artworks. She has worked with Island Records, Big Beat Records, Ultramajic, Get Physical, Visionquest, and Fool's Gold Records. During her collaboration with Coldplay she instructed the band to include their own childhood photographs, original artwork and their children's drawings into the artwork to see what they could create. In an interview on the Coldplay's official website she discusses the project, ...Guy had this huge box with really awesome old photos that he was cutting out. And Chris would come and he would do a painting and then we'd try to include it in the collage, or he would come and paint a bit of the collage. So it was like a mix of things. And then all of a sudden, a week later we have this huge collage done...I didn't do a mock-up of how the collage would look. It was just organic. When asked who else worked on the piece she elaborates...the band's kids came and they did all these beautiful paintings, so I wanted to include those too. So if you see the mountains of the collage at the top, the layers, it's pieces of their kids paintings that I scanned in. So it's like a mix of everything. And at the end it looked really good....The collage was not intended to be on the album cover, however on seeing the finished piece Coldplay wanted it to be incorporated in some way. By mirroring areas of the design and adding a bright multi-coloured Flower Of Life symbol at the centre, Chris was surprised at the dramatic visual and powerful meaning behind it and the band agreed it would be the cover for their up and coming album. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lots denoted with a 'TP' will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue.
