German Poetry. Gedichte [and] Erinnerungen von Friedrich Althaus [1829-1897], 2 manuscript volumes, both largely in Althaus's hand, the first volume of original poetry, including poems originally written between 1846 and 1864 and written up later, mostly to rectos only of approximately 70 leaves, and including some poems written up in a neater unidentified hand and one published poem from 1848 tipped in with tape, the volume of memoirs of his life written up circa 1895 in London and also including a life of his father [Friedrich Althaus, general superintendent of Lippe-Detmold] and also his work on the portrait collection at Buckingham Palace between 1856 and 1864, approximately 130 pages written in a small and very difficult hand, typed contents leaf at front, plus a third typescript volume of Friedrich Althaus's poetry compiled the year after his death in 1898, title, contents, index and 80 leaves of text, neatly typed to rectos only, a few minor manuscript corrections, all top edge gilt, uniform contemporary half morocco, all with some wear and cracked on joints, final volume with covers detached and spine deficient, 4to Friedrich Althaus was a German writer and historian who moved to London after finished his doctoral thesis in History at the University of Berlin in 1852. He taught German at Woolwich Academy, later taking up the post of Professor of German at University College, London, in 1874, a post he held until his death in 1897. His publications include 'Englische Charakterbilder' (1869), 'On the Personal Relations between Goethe and Byron' (1888) and 'Erinnerungen an Thomas Carlyle' (1881), an account of the writing of biography and of the meetings between the two men. A rare Jaeger Le Coultre circa 1948 Mk II RAF issue pilot's chronometer wristwatch, circular black dial with Arabic numerals, luminous hands and points in a steel case, marked to the back with broad arrow 6B/3462817/48, on a brown leather strap with dial cover (Provenance: with the same owner since 1963 who worked at Wylfa Nuclear Power Station, in 1967 the watch was compulsory sent to have the luminosity on the fingers reduced to a safe dose by CEGB, as it was registering on the equipment at the entry and exit points of the site), (wear and tear age commiserate, appears to be a non-runner, we cannot access the movement)
An early 18th Century horn box, the oval cover with white metal armorial plaque, the armorial of six bees, the crest a beehive, 12cm wide/Provenance: Plas Gwyn, Anglesey/Note: Armorial of Price of Derwen in Denbighshire. In 1724, Elizabeth, daughter and heiress of John Price of Derwen married William Jones of Plas Gwyn, Barrister and Recorder of Beaumaris (1688-1735). William and Elizabeth had a daughter and sole heiress who married in 1756 Paul Panton of Bagillt, later of Plas Gwyn./see illustration
A George IV silver dish cover, Joseph Preedy, London 1823, with scroll handle and fluted domed decoration, with small armorial possibly relating to the Bowen family, 26.5cm diameter, approximately 705gm/Provenance: Plas Gwyn, Anglesey/Note: Armorial of is the coat of Hwfa ap Cynddelw of Anglesey, ancestral head of the 1st Noble Tribe of Wales, who lived c1100-70 and who according to tradition, was Steward to Owain Gwynedd, Prince of Gwynedd. Several notable Anglesey families were descended from him.
A set of five plated candlesticks, each with thistle shaped sconce, stiff leaf decoration to the tapering stem and on a circular foot, one 37cm high, the other four 31cm high, all with armorials/Provenance: Plas Gwyn, Anglesey/Note: Armorial of Paul Panton, the famous Welsh barrister and antiquary (1727-97). The arms shown here are set within a lozenge, which indicates that this silver belonged to his widow. His wife Jane in fact died young in 1764, but he married in 1770 a widow, Martha Kirk of Chester who died 27th July 1814 and so this would be a piece of hers in the period between 1797 and 1814./see illustration
Richard Wilson R.A. (1713/14 - 1782)/The Hermitage, A View of the Villa Madama Near Rome/indistinctly inscribed by Oldfield Bowles on a label attached to the stretcher/oil on canvas, 63.5cm x 75.5cm/Provenance: Probably painted for Paul Panton (1727-97), Plas Gwyn, Pentraeth, Anglesey; thence by descent to the present owners/Literature:W G Constable, Richard Wilson, London 1953, p203, possibly version 6 listed under plate 82a; included in 'Richard Wilson Online', the online catalogue raisonné of the works of Richard Wilson by Paul Spencer-Longhurst, ref no P91E/Note: The Villa Madama, so called on account of its occupation in the sixteenth century by Margaret of Austria, Duchess of Parma, was designed by Raphael for Cardinal Giuliano dei Medici. The label attached to the stretcher is signed by Oldfield Bowles (1739 - 1810) a pupil of Thomas Jones and a celebrated collector. It is possibly written to Paul Panton who had asked him to examine the picture. Bowles owned a version of this composition which he sold to Samuel Rogers for 100 guineas and which was admired by Farington/see illustration
LATE 16TH CENTURY POLITICAL INTEREST LETTER signed by Sir Richard Warde (died 1578) and Sir Roger Wilbraham (1553 - 1616), it appears to be a letter discussing the promises and terms connected to an agreement or argument over the property of an 'R.C' and 'R.V' which these two men where either witness too or facilitaing; together with another later letter, probably 19th century, which discusses the position of bishops to affect the morality of the people in their diocese and to stay true to the path of their faith rather than furthering thier own causes, possibly a daft to be used as a surmon or speech, these two letters are loose inside a half morocco leather folio that originally contained a group of Civil War Broadsides, a label to the inside cover shows the folio and it's original contents were sold at Sothebys, July 9th 1923 Lot 151 for five pounds, ex libris Fairfax of Cameron label to inside cover, also with a dealer's receipt dated 1915 from Maggs Brothers, 109 Strand, London, for a list of civil war period documents, some may have made up the broadsides later contained within the folio, folio 39.5cm long Note: Sir Richard Warde was an English politician and Royal Official. In 1571, during the reign of Elizabeth I of England, he was elected the Member of Parliament for Berkshire, due to the support of Henry Norris, 1st Baron Norreys. He was also MP for Windsor a number of times, as well as being Cofferer of the Royal Household and Clerk of the Green Cloth. Sir Roger Wilbraham was a prominent English lawyer who served as Solicitor-General for Ireland under Elizabeth I and held positions at court under James I, including Master of Requests and surveyor of the Court of Wards and Liveries. He bought an estate at Dorfold in the parish of Acton (later his son built Dorfold Hall on the site which still stands today) near his birthplace of Nantwich.

Athletics - a superb original lot relating to British Athlete Sheila Pratt (later Sewell) who competed at the 1950 European Games. The lot includes many original press cuttings, photographs, original competitors numbers, clothing, autographs, Team GB cloth badges 1950 & 1951 (framed) ticket etc. This interesting lady had an eventful life also being a West End Fashion Model in 1950 (aged 19). The lot includes a packed original ledger starting c1911-1922, full of cuttings, photos, menus, Programmes, letters, posters, etc etc. A Surrey County LTA cloth blazer badge, four silver & enamel Wimbledon named LTA badges for 1935/1937/1938/1939 and a Clubweltspiel Bremen Dulwich Ostern 1913 BLTV pin badge. Cuttings also relate to famous Tennis Players who were Killed during WW1. He was a member of the LTA Council and Surrey County Lawn Tennis Association Honorary Secretary, he was also heavily involved in the choosing of the new Tennis Ball. An American Civil War Colt Army Model 1860 percussion revolver SN-66992 for 1862. Frame marked 'COLTS PATENT'. Barrel 8", top flat marked 'Address Col.saml COLT. U.S. America' U.S. sub inspectors marks. Good original walnut grips (tiny chips to toes). Rebated cylinder. In good overall condition, dark patina to metal parts. Matching numbers bar cylinder (4379) and backstrap (114379) from another pistol made in 1863. The serial number 66.992 indicates issue to the 2nd West Virginia Volunteer Cavalry ? The Springfield Research Service who note .66993, 66994 and 66995 all to that unit (also 66955). A good and interesting American Civil War Revolver. A 'sleeper'. no licence required for this historic gun.
Military, Prisoner of War, a rare collection of 29 candid and camp photographer photos of Officers who where held prisoner at Crefeld Camp, nr. Cologne (Germany), 1915-16, contained in original album, each neatly annotated, inc. portraits some signed, French, Russian Priest and funeral, R.Scots Fusiliers, Carpenters, Theatre play scenes, grave of Capt. Morritt E.Surrey, while there are 2 photos of the officer who collected these unfortunately his name is not listed. Quote from the report on Crefeld from American Ambassador in 1915 when he visited the camp "British prisoners, canteen prices, and told me that there were in the barracks, 133 British officers with 21 orderlies, 7 Belgian officers with 1 orderly, 157 French officers with 63 orderlies, 128 Russian officers with 28 orderlies, 1 British medical officer, 3 British officers in the infirmary on account of wounds, no Indian or civilian prisoners". Wonderful insight into early WWI Officers camps & their conditions.
