Neatly mounted to a small page removed from an autograph album, G Mason-MacFarlane, described as a 'courageous eccentric', had his proposal to assassinate Hitler turned down by his superiors. Lord Halifax, the Foreign Secretary, said of Mason-MacFarlane's plan to assassinate Hitler while he was on a stand reviewing the Wehrmacht for his 50th birthday celebrations on 20th April 1939, 'We have not reached that stage….when we have to use assassination as a substitute for diplomacy'. Hitler for his part regarded Mason-MacFarlane as a personal enemy.

Mountbatten further writes 'I see from your letter that you wrote the English version of the pamphlet you enclosed. I am astonished to note that no effort has been made to translate your English into French, for the French version appears to be entirely different in layout and phrases. I also regret to see that no attempt has been made to produce the diagrammatic figures with French titling in the French text. In fact anybody who understands both languages would be thoroughly lost trying to compare one version with the other. I wonder what the explanation is.' Accompanied by the original envelope. ‘They will throw little, if any, light on the origin, construction and methods of propulsion of the objects known as Flying Saucers, or on the aims of their operators or occupants’ DOWDING HUGH: (1882-1970) British Air Chief Marshal, Commander of RAF Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain. A.L.S., Dowding, one page, 8vo, Southborough, Tunbridge Wells, 1st August 1955, to Lord Beaverbrook. Dowding commences his letter by stating ‘I think that the enclosed will amuse you’, continuing to explain, ‘It was what I gave to the Sunday Express in response to a telephonic request for my reactions after the Daily Express report on Eisenhower’s announcement of the U.S. intention to construct & launch satellites…..Needless to say, they did not print it’, and concluding by hoping that Beaverbrook will enjoy his stay on the Riviera. Together with a typescript of a letter submitted by Dowding to the editor of the Sunday Express, stating, in full, ‘I have seen the article headed “Flying Saucers – Official” in this morning’s Daily Express. It is an example of confused thinking to suppose that man-made artificial satellites have anything to do with the objects which are popularly known as Flying Saucers. There is nothing mysterious about these projected meteorological instruments; they will be made of known materials, projected into their orbits by known methods and will be subject throughout to the Earth’s gravitational field. They will throw little, if any, light on the origin, construction and methods of propulsion of the objects known as Flying Saucers, or on the aims of their operators or occupants. Daily Express “Opinion” asks:- “What about Flying Saucers now? Hallucinations? Spots on the Sun?” Anyone who has been satisfied with these explanations to date will have no cause to change his opinion because a new long-range weather recording device is projected for launching in two years’ time. Or can it be that the hitherto sceptical Daily Express is booking a seat on the Flying Saucer Band Wagon?’. A remarkable letter and document demonstrating Dowding’s firm belief in UFOs. Two file holes to the left of each piece, only affecting one word of text in Dowding’s letter. VG, 2 Max Aitken (1879-1964) 1st Baron Beaverbrook. Canadian-British newspaper publisher who served as Minister of Aircraft Production 1940-41. Beaverbrook acquired the Daily Express in 1916 and built it into the most successful mass-circulation newspaper in the world, with sales of 2.25 million copies a day across Great Britain. Dowding was a firm believer in Flying Saucers and, along with the paranormal, developed a strong interest in UFOs during the 1950s. The Air Chief Marshal is quoted as having declared ‘The cumulative evidence for the existence of UFOs is quite overwhelming and I accept the fact of their existence…..More than 10,000 sightings have been reported, the majority of which cannot be accounted for by any ‘scientific’ explanation….I am convinced that these objects do exist and that they are not manufactured by any nation on earth’.
SMIK OTTO: (1922-1944) Czechoslovak fighter ace of World War II who became the highest scoring Slovak fighter ace in the RAF. Killed in Action when shot down over the Netherlands. Rare portion of a World War II date D.S., Smik, one page, small 8vo, n.p., n.d., evidently neatly clipped from a combat report, the narrative stating, in part, 'I was airbourne (sic) from Base at 21.25….I was at 5,000 feet when I saw Diver below me…..I dived and attacked it from port quarter and below, using cannon only and giving 2-second burst. I saw red flashes on the fuselage and Diver crashed near Ashford. I resumed patrol and…..saw a Diver at 2,000 ft…..Dived and made stern attack….giving finishing burst with cannon. Scored hits on fuselage and both wings flew off. Diver crashed N.E. of Battle. At 22.00 hours I was over channel at 4,000 ft. Saw Diver below…..Went down and fired 2-second burst M[achine] G[un]. ZUMBACH JAN: (1915-1986) Polish-Swiss fighter ace of World War II who participated in the Battle of Britain. A portion of a D.S., J Zumbach, one page, oblong 8vo, n.p., n.d. (April 1942). The typed document, evidently clipped from a combat report, states, in part, 'I was leading my Squadron at a height of 12,000 ft. when……I saw 12 F.W. 190s on my right……The E[nemy] A[ircraft] dived down towards the bombers as I ordered by Sqdn. to attack them. I gave the 1st and 2nd F.W. 190 a short burst from 300 yards in order to head them off. The whole enemy formation then turned to the left and up and were engaged by 315 Sqdn……The E/A then turned left and went straight up. I fired at him again from 300 yards when he gave a half roll and I fired as it was upside down. He then dived down spinning to earth and I followed…….I gave him more bursts. I finally left at 10,000 ft. (as I noticed that I was below the height of the bombers), the E/A still spinning slowly to earth…..When I turned towards the bombers I was met head-on by 4 Me.109 flying about 100 ft. above, who opened fire from 100 yards……I claim 1 F.W. 190 probably destroyed'. Gordon was an Australian – or still is, from what you say – and was “A” Flight Commander…..I talk about the “second section” because the flight of six aircraft was made up of a section of three aircraft from “B” Flight led by Bob Tuck……and a section of three from “A” Flight led by Gordon Olive……The squadron, by the way was 65, stationed at Hornchurch in Essex at the time.’ and also including an A.L.S. by the widow of Gordon Olive, returning the Spitfire photograph and explaining the circumstances under which her husband signed the photograph shortly before passing away. HORROCKS BRIAN (1895-1985) British Lieutenant-General of World War II, commander of the XXX Corps in Operation Market Garden. Autograph Manuscript, unsigned, one page, 4to, n.p., n.d. (c.1952). The manuscript, penned in blue fountain pen ink (and with a few pencil corrections), is an appreciation of Dwight D. Eisenhower and states, in part, 'General Eisenhower is a warm and friendly man with a most persuasive manner; one of those rare beings who has risen to the supreme heights and yet remained at heart a simple person. It is these qualities allied to his complete selflessness which have made him so popular, and no one can remain in his presence for long without succumbing to his charm. Even the British soldiers who do not as a rule take kindly to “foreign” Generals knew him affectionately as Ike. He has been accused of being pro-British, be that as it may, there is no doubt at all that the British are pro-Eisenhower……But no one can rise to be the commander of the military forces of the free Western world on charm alone and after a few minutes in his company it is soon obvious that behind his charming personality lie many sterling qualities. He is a man of the highest possible moral courage and having once decided on what is the right thing to do nothing will deflect him from his course. For a General he has a remarkably shrewd political sense which is particularly important in his present appointment……There have been rumours in connection with the next Presidential election in the U.S.A: we must all pray that these are untrue and implore our friends across the Atlantic to add one last thing to their generous Marshall Aid, by leaving us IKE. ‘Winston Churchill is strongly anti-Italian, and is all for going to war with Mussolini’[MUSSOLINI BENITO]: (1883-1945) Italian Fascist Dictator of World War II. SNOWDEN PHILIP (1864-1937) 1st Viscount Snowden. British politician who served as the Labour Party's first Chancellor of the Exchequer 1924, 1929-31. An interesting T.L.S., Snowden, three pages, small 4to, Tilford, Farnham, 21st August 1935, to the Rt. Hon. G. N. Barnes ('My Dear George'). Snowden thanks his correspondent for their letter and adds that he is in complete agreement with the contents, continuing 'It is a devil of a situation, and I am not at clear what can be done. Only one thing is certain, and that is that Mussolini is determined on his military adventure, and nothing will stop him. The powers have been wasting time in fruitless talk which they knew would make no impression on Mussolini. All this has played his game. Our prohibition of the export of arms to Abyssinia has been outrageous, and if it were lifted now I am afraid it is too late to help Abyssinia. The British Cabinet is to meet this week, and I do not know if they will take any decisive action. I do hear that there is a party in the Cabinet who are for enforcing sanctions. Winston Churchill is strongly anti-Italian, and is all for going to war with Mussolini. I suppose that the stumbling block in the way of strong action by Britain is our alliance with France. This has been the curse of our foreign policy from before the War…..I saw Lloyd George yesterday and he told me that Sam Hoare has asked him to come and see him. This rather looks as if the Government were anxious to get united support for any drastic action they may have to take…..One thing only seems evident and that is that [the] League is going to burst up. I see that Lansbury has written to the Pope asking him to call a world Conference to be held on the Hill of Cavalry where the nations will agree to a general sharing out of the surface of the earth!' and concluding his letter by discussing Lloyd George and the Trade Unionists and also remarking 'I do not think that the Labour Party is making any headway in the country, and I should be surprised if they poll their 1929 vote at the next Election'. Together with a second T.L.S., Snowden, two pages, small 4to, Tilford, Farnham, 15th April 1936, to George [Barnes]. Snowden states that he is glad to have received his correspondent's letter and writes 'Like you I am dismayed about the international situation. I see no likelihood of a way out of the Abyssinian situation which will not be a victory for Italy at the expense of the League of Nations. For the time being the League is destroyed. Mussolini has successfully defied the League. The other Powers have played a cowardly game all through. They have been afraid to tackle Musso. France has been in league with him all the time. ‘It may be the same suffering of the eternal fight against hatred, envy and ignorance’HITLER ADOLF: (1889-1945) Fuhrer of the Third Reich 1933-45. An extremely rare A.L.S., Adolf, two pages, small 4to, Detmold, 8th January 1933, to Winifred Wagner ('My honoured and dear Wini'), on Hitler's personal printed stationery (with his Munich address lightly crossed through), in German. Hitler writes in bold pencil and states, in part, 'For weeks and weeks I am again involved in difficult and hard work, troubles and worries. I do not know whether you are able to understand me altogether, only I beg of you to forgive me, at least that I express my thanks only today for a present with which you gave me the most beautiful pleasure. For two years the Christmas season is only a season of sorrow for me and I cannot overcome myself to be like the years before, so I must beg you very heartily to accept my thanks this way and belatedly. I believe there will be a time when I may be able to prove my grateful attachments to you not only with words but with deeds. Unfortunately, there will always be new mountains to conquer. I can't understand today why in my youth Richard Wagner and his fate meant more to me than so many other great Germans. It may be the same suffering of the eternal fight against hatred, envy and ignorance - those are the same sorrow and only for that reason I dare, my dear Wini, to write like that to you and express my wishes on the 8th of January while others do on the 1st of January…..May the summer be a success for you. May fate permit me to be able to contribute somewhat…..' A letter of significant content and good association. Autograph letters of Hitler containing such private and personal content are exceptionally rare and highly desirable. Several neat tears have been professionally restored to a very high standard and only very slightly affect a few words of text, but not the signature. About VG Winifred Wagner (1897-1980) English-born wife of composer and conductor Siegfried Wagner, the son of composer Richard Wagner. Hitler, who greatly admired the music of Richard Wagner, first met Winifred Wagner in 1923 and the two maintained a close friendship for two decades. In 1933, the year of the present letter, there were rumours of an impending marriage between Hitler and Wagner. Winifred Wagner ran the annual Bayreuth Festival from 1930-45, to which Hitler leant his support, giving it government assistance and tax-exempt status. Hitler's reference in the present letter to the summer being successful for Wagner was clearly made in relation to the Bayreuth Festival. Hitler and Wagner corresponded for almost twenty years although the letters have not been disclosed to scholars and have been kept locked away by one of Winifred Wagner's grandchildren. Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany on 30th January 1933, just a matter of weeks after writing the present letter.
HITLER ADOLF: (1889-1945) Fuhrer of the Third Reich 1933-45. A significant World War II date D.S., Adolf Hitler, three pages (separate leaves), 4to, Fuhrer Headquarters, 11th September 1941, to the Head of the High Command of the Wehrmacht [Wilhelm Keitel], marked Secret Command Document, in German. Hitler states, in part, 'The armaments industry is more than busy with orders. The implementation of the programmes I have determined is therefore only possible if the demands of the departments of the Wehrmacht are coordinated and brought into line with the capacities of the industry. The programmes I have determined therefore require the following measures: 1.) Concentration and limitation of all procurements of the departments of the Wehrmacht on their own armaments, 2.) Balancing within the entire Wehrmacht by the High Command of the Wehrmacht if deliveries of orders cannot be guaranteed…..3.) General adjustment and coordination of necessary procurements of the departments of the Wehrmacht considering the capacities of the industry. In order to carry out these measures, I command that the demands of the departments of the Wehrmacht regarding procurement and development be sent to the procurement offices via the Head of the High Command of the Wehrmacht. The latter, together with the Reich Minister for Armament and Ammunition, examines the capabilities of the armaments industry to meet the demands and decides on my behalf about the type and scope of the orders. I authorise the Head of the High Command of the Wehrmacht to make cuts in non-urgent production and to issue corresponding refusals…..If production should only be possible by restricting productions of priority programmes, I reserve the right to decide. The Head of the High Command of the Wehrmacht issues implementing regulations in agreement with the Reich Minister for Armament and Ammunition'. A typed notation at the conclusion indicates that copies of the document were also sent to the Commander-in-Chief of the Wehrmacht, the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy, the Commander-in-Chief of the Air Force, the Reich Minister for Armament and Ammunition and the Reichsfuhrer SS, along with the instruction 'Document to be destroyed!'. The verso of the final page features various typed details and indelible pencil annotations and initials regarding the distribution (and destruction) of copies of the Fuhrer's Secret Command Document. The Battle of Moscow, one of the most important battles of World War II, is regarded by historians as the first critical turning point of the war.
