Of Ernest Henry Shackleton interest: a rare and uncommonly neatly written six page Letter dated May 7th 1893 from the Hoghton Tower (his first ship) in Newcastle Harbour, New South Wales, Australia. The letter is a reply to a "long and interesting letter" from Mrs. Snelling of Beau Basin, Mauritius, who is understood to have been the wife of a Government servant and with whom Shackleton and two crew companions stayed for a few days when visiting the Island. The letter displays remarkable maturity for a 19 year old referring to the childishness/innocence of the Snellings' two teenage daughters, nonetheless it is tinged with the sadness of leaving Mauritius comparing the hills of Mauritius fading away as they sailed to the last lights of Old England disappearing from sight on his original departure. The letter also gives some insight into his school days and his decision to leave to go to sea and also refers to his brother's interest in stamp collecting. The letter is on cream flimsy paper with some foxing and is two pieces of paper, one 8" x 10" folded into two making four sides of writing, the second a smaller piece of paper, 8" x 5" approx., sadly in two pieces where the letter has been folded. Both pieces of paper have a watermark, discernible when held up against the light "Langer's Newcastle Book Arcade Merchants Note".

WW2 and South East Asia Group of Six Awarded to Captain James Whittaker Thornley 3/8th Gurkha Rifles Who Was Tragically Lost Climbing Nango Parbat in the Himalayas, the group consists of 1939-45 star, Africa star with clasp North Africa 1942-43, Burma star, Defence medal, 1939-45 war medal and George VI General Service medal 1918-62 with clasp S E Asia 1945-46 “CAPT J W THORNLEY GR”. Medals are complete with ribbons and remain in good condition. Accompanied by two newspaper cuttings about his death. Captain James Whittaker Thornley from Manchester Road, Southport. Educated at King George V School and later Liverpool University. He served for 4 ½ years in the armed forces, most of which was in the Far East where he rose to the rank of Captain in the Gurkha Rifles. In 1950 when on an expedition to collect samples of wildlife and flowers in the mountains on the Himalayas, he was reported missing and presumed dead along with another member of his team. An account of the expedition and his loss by the only survivor of the expedition R M W Marsh is detailed in the Himalayan Club’s “Himalayan Journal Volume 16”; “NANGA PARBAT, DECEMBER 1950, J. W. Thornley, W. H. Crace, and I decided to attempt a winter reconnaissance of Nanga Parbat when, in October 1950, after we had been out in the field for three weeks, our plans for spending a year in the north Karakoram were unexpectedly shattered. It was our only alternative to returning home. We did not intend to go high; our object was to see what winter temperatures^ snow, and avalanche conditions would be like. Base C lamp at 12,500 feet was fully established by 1 ith November, and on the 12th we occupied Camp I at 14,650 feet. Our four Sherpas were unwilling to sleep above Base Camp and we carried on alone, relaying food and equipment. On the 16th I returned to base willi frost-bitten toes. Crace and Thornley were going on for a short way, and we saw them on most days until 1st December, when they were moving up strongly, carrying loads at about 18,000 feet. We saw thrin slop and pitch a tent, but did not see them again. For the next three days the tent was visible: then there was a heavy storm, and that, too, had disappeared. Two of the Sherpas and I went up after them but we were unable to reach the place where they had last been seen. Later, planes searched the mountain-side without spotting anything. Their food-supplies were sufficient to last until 19th December, and on 26 th December we gave up hope and left the mountain. Thornley and Crace were both extremely determined. Thornley, for instance, marched 165 miles to Nanga Parbat over the Babusarr pass, wearing a pair of gym shoes, in six days, and was in no way fatigued at the end. They were a fine pair of friends and it took an expedition of this sort, where we lived close, in difficult conditions, to bring out fully the great qualities of endurance, patience, and kindness which were so characteristic of them. I am sure they wish for no better tribute than that when they were last seen they were still going up and still going strong.”

The Letter states – ‘About three weeks ago the Brigade asked for assistance on our left to fill a gap between us and them. So we sent ‘D’ Company over and they were nearly all lost in one night. In the dark they went to within 10 yards of the German trenches before they knew it and a murderous fire was opened upon them to which of course the men replied. So great was the slaughter that our men took cover behind the German dead. One man named James Keil was recommended for the DCM for going up to the trenches and shooting a German officer and taking his revolver and field glasses, and was going for a machine gun. Poor chap was killed yesterday along with two others’. James Keil was the son of Peter Keil of Inchsteile Farm, Alves and was 31 years of age. The insignia has been removed from the cap but the outline of where it was once present can still be seen. Grey cloth lining to the interior with size ink stamp. Side cap shows some service wear. It would appear that he wore this cap whilst being a prisoner of war which is why the insignia has been removed. It was on Christmas Day, 1942 that he was awarded the Military Cross for Gallantry in action on Longstop Hill near Medjes el Bab, he persuaded troops from a American infantry battalion to stand firm and occupy a firing position while he got them ammunition. The citation for the Military Cross was as follows; “Capt, T/Major, A/Lt Col B Kingzett has a record in action of unfailing determination and enthusiasm. While commanding 457 Light Battery he frequently gave most valuable and balanced accounts to Division HQ of the progress of the various actions, disposing of rumours, and displaying a confidence and tactical sense remarkable at the beginning of his first campaign. His attitude under reverses was an example to all. On 25 Dec after he had assumed command of 64 A.TK Regt, He saved by personal leadership under close range fire two 6 pr guns at Longstop Hill, which he had moved up close behind infantry in the assault on that place, and were about to be over-run. He later persuaded a unit of allied troops who were retiring in the general rearward movement, to stand and occupy a covering position. These troops were without ammunition which Lt Col Kingzett proceeded to get from Medjes in borrowed transport. His regiment has improved greatly in its keenness, alertness and military outlook since Lt Col Kingzett assumed command.”He continued to command the regiment during the invasion of Sicily and the early part of the campaign on mainland Italy. In October 1943 he was wounded when his Jeep ran over a mine at the crossing of the river Biferno, Termoli on the Adriatic Coast. He was returned to England where he recovered from his wounds. He became an instructor at the School of Artillery, Larkhill. June 1945 he was appointed GSO1 RA at the Headquarters of 14th Army in Rangoon. Autumn of 1945 he took command of the 1st Indian Anti-Tank Regiment, serving with this unit in Sumatra, fighting to restore order in the former Dutch East Indies where the Indonesian nationalists were taking control of Japanese held positions and using former Allied Prisoner of War as hostages. In the post war years he served in various staff roles before being appointed the command of 33 Airborne Light Regiment Royal Artillery. Kingzett had to complete a course in Parachute training to take command of this regiment. He served with this regiment in Cyprus and the Canal Zone. Became college commander at Sandhurst 1954-55, Commander Royal Artillery 42nd Division (TA) at Preston 1959-61, it was during this time he was awarded the C.B.E. His last appointment with the British Army was as Deputy Commander British Troops Malta and Libya 1962-64.
