‘The Kiss’ (73 x 25cm) Five Hand Cut Silhouettes – Framed by Bill Roberts - Bill is 78 yrs young, at 11 he won a scholarship to the Liverpool school of Art (now LIPA). He now paints as a hobby. 'The Kiss' depicts a chance meeting, which develops into a love story. There were 3 original black and whites to the story, painted sometime in the 50's by Bill’s father who was also an artist (and a jazz musician). Bill took the three paintings and added two more to embellish the story. Therefore, two generations of the Roberts clan can take credit for this piece.

He studied art in Athens and Florence, moving to Germany in 1906 where he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. There he read the writings of the philosophers Nietzsche, Arthur Schopenhauer and Otto Weiningerand and also studied the works of Arnold Böcklin and Max Klinger. In the years prior to World War I, De Chirico founded the art movement called "Scuola Metafisica" which profoundly influenced the surrealists. Moving to Florence in 1910, De Chirico painted the first of his 'Metaphysical Town Square' series, 'The Enigma of an Autumn Afternoon'. The following year he moved to Paris and met Pierre Laprade, a member of the jury at the Salon d'Automne, where he exhibited three of his works and subsequently at the Salon des Indépendants and Salon d’Automne. Here, De Chirico won praise for his work almost immediately from the writer Guillaume Apollinaire, who helped to introduce his work to the later Surrealists. De Chirico strongly influenced the Surrealist movement: Yves Tanguy. Other Surrealists who acknowledged De Chirico's influence include Max Ernst, Salvador Dalí and René Magritte. Other artists as diverse as Giorgio Morandi, Carlo Carrà, Paul Delvaux, Carel Willink, Harue Koga, Philip Guston and Sylvia Plath were also influenced deeply by De Chirico. Artist: Jeanne Modigliani (1918 - 1984) Artwork Title: Portrait Size: 63 x 48 cm Media: Pastel on paper Artist Info: Jeanne Modigliani was born in Nice on the 29th November 1918. She was soon after adopted and brought up by her aunt Margherita Modigliani, in Livorno, her father Amedeo Modigliani's home town. Her childhood was never discussed until she reached adulthood so she was unaware of the lives and tragic deaths of her parents, who both died when she was only 14 months old. However, life was not to be easy for the child of Modigliani either, and as Fascism deepened its hold on Italy poor young Jeanne was identified and persecuted as a Jew – so she left Italy and, like her father before her, took refuge in Paris where she later joined the French Resistance and she was imprisoned for political reasons. As daughter of painter Jeanne Hebutern and the great master Amedeo Modigliani, Jeanne inherited artistic genes and her works are of a stunning, elegant, refined and sensual quality, albeit painting was only one of her many artistic outlooks in life. Jeanne Modigliani died in 1984 in Paris, at the age of 66. Notes: Probably her most lasting heritage is the faithful and true biography of her father written in 1958 and the product of very intensive, scrupulous and passionate research when she finally discovered who her real father was! "Modigliani, man and myth", was later translated into English from the Italian by Esther Rowland Clifford. Artworks by Jeanne Modigliani have had some low auctions records but have attracted a lot of interest in recent years. Artworks by Jeanne Modigliani have now become rare collectors items.

On the DCM, 14-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal, mounted as worn, contained in their Spink & Son Ltd case, complete with receipt and miniatures. The citation for the DCM reads: For conspicuous gallantry in holding with one other man, a detached post, his supporting party haven been driven back. Subsequently he showed conspicuous courage in an attack, and was wounded. Worcestershire Regiment in The Great War, pg 155 "Crater Fighting on The Vimy Ridge"....The following day (April 28th 1916) was broken only by sniping and bombing around the new post. Nothing much occurred until darkness fell. Then, at about 7.30pm a terrific explosion shook the ground. A huge mine had been exploded by the enemy under the parapet near the left flank of the Battalion's line. A storm of firing followed as the enemy attacked. The new post at "Broad Marsh Crater" was overwhelmed, but around the fresh crater formed by the explosion the bombers of the 3rd Worcestershire fought stubbornly. The defence was inspired 2/Lieut. A superb and highly unusual Victorian London made Khanjar hunting or expedition knife by Savigny & Co as featured in The London Knife Book and from the Ron Flook Collection, 23cm recurved blade stamped SAVIGNY & CO. 67 ST. JAMES'S STREET LONDON, the wooden hilt carved in the Scottish manner with entwined Celtic strapwork, the pommel carved in the form of a Camel's head, contained in its white metal mounted brown leather sheath. See Plate 143 on Page 144 of The London Knife Book by Ron Flook. Discussions have suggested that the camels head is representative of a family crest. There are two crests featuring a camels head listed in Fairbairn's Crests and taking the carving of the grip as being representative of a Scottish family the principal crest could be that of Fullarton or Fullerton, possibly linking it to Lt-Col James Alexander Fullerton who served in the Himalayas in 1845-47. However, a further crest featuring a crowned camels head emerging from a coronet points to the family of Pattison and Second Lieutenant John Robert Graham Pattison who served with the Ceylon Rifles circa 1840. Given that there are no engraved crests or initials this is all supposition.
