William IV, American and Anti-Slavery Interest - A pair of engraved glass patty pans inscribed 'To The Man In The Black Trousers' 7.5cm diam (2) ** Referring to the anti William sentiments regarding the Abolition of the Slavery Act. During the reign of George III the then Prince William had sought to repair Anglo-American relations, but despite personal experience of seeing slavery in the West Indies whilst serving in the Royal Navy, William argued against Wilberforce who was campaigning to abolish the slave trade. 'To the Man in the Black Trousers' is a play on words from the earlier ' To the Man in the Black Velvet Waistcoat' - William III's death was directly attributable to a fall from a horse following the horse putting a hoof down a mole hole - the mole having a black velvet coat- Jacobite enemies would therefore raise a toast to 'The little man in the black velvet waistcoat' - the mole responsible for the fatefull hole.

John Minton (1917-1957) - Allegorical scene with figures and unicorn on a shoreline, oil on canvas, signed 'Minton' top left, further annotated to frame verso, 76 x 61cm Condition Report / Extra Information Francis John Minton was a prolific artist who also produced illustrations for Elizabeth David's influential cookbook 'A Book of Mediterranean Food' and the Leader Magazine, as well as posters for London Transport, wallpapers, stage sets and textiles. His tragically short life encapsulated a very particular moment in British art history; from early success with exhibitions at LeFevre Gallery and the Royal Academy, through a short stint in the Pioneer Corps during WWII, heady days as part of the Soho art scene (counting Lucien Freud and Francis Bacon amongst his friends), to influencing young artists while teaching at Camberwell College of Arts, the Central School of Art & Design, and the Royal College of Art. Minton's art reflected both his surroundings and his innermost feelings; ranging from gloomy bomb-scarred urban scenes, pastoral landscapes, and touching portraits of friends & lovers, to later colourful views from his travels in the West Indies. John Minton committed suicide in 1957 at the age of 39. It is thought that he felt artistically side-lined by the incoming abstract art trend, which was compounded by his on-going struggle with his homosexuality in a less tolerant age, and an increasing reliance on alcohol. Examples of Minton's work are held by the Tate, Leeds Art Gallery, and in the Royal College of Art collection amongst others, while a major exhibition to mark Minton's centenary took place last summer at Pallant House Gallery in Chichester. This particular painting was produced while Minton was studying at St John's Wood School of Art (1935-1938), and greatly influenced by fellow student Michael Ayrton's enthusiasm with the work of neo-romantic artists. It is referenced in Frances Spalding's 1991 biography of John Minton 'Dance till the Stars Come Down' as follows; "Eric Newton… praised the Group as a whole for imposing simplicity of form on difficult subjects but regretted a certain heavy-handedness and a lack of spontaneity in the handling of paint. These criticisms also apply to the picture with which Minton won a prize for composition during his last term at the Wood and which he gave to Ken Lawrence. Its careful arrangement of allegorical figures and a unicorn on a shore again testify to his study of Italian art"Minton gave the painting to Ken Lawrence, who was an old school friend from their time together at Reading School between 1932-35. The current owner inherited the painting from Lawrence in 1990, but remembers it hanging in his home from the late 1940s onwards.

Great War Victoria Cross winner Lt G Insall VC MC and his Air Gunner A M Donald signed 1968 50th Ann RAF cover. Very rare autograph and more so as both he and his gunner signed. For most conspicuous bravery, skill and determination, on 7 November 1915, in France. He was patrolling in a Vickers Fighting Machine, with First Class Air Mechanic T. H. Donald as gunner, when a German machine was sighted, pursued, and attacked near Achiet. The German pilot led the Vickers machine over a rocket battery, but with great skill Lieutenant Insall dived and got to close range, when Donald fired a drum of cartridges into the German machine, stopping its engine. The German pilot then dived through a cloud, followed by Lieutenant Insall Fire was again opened, and the German machine was brought down heavily in ploughed field 4 miles south east of Arras. On seeing the Germans scramble out of their machine and prepare to fire, Lieutenant Insall dived to 500 feet, thus enabling Donald to open heavy fire on them. The Germans then fled, one helping the other, who was apparently wounded. Other Germans then commenced heavy fire, but in spite of this, Lieutenant Insall turned again, and an incendiary bomb was dropped on the German machine, which was last seen wreathed in smoke. Lieutenant Insall then headed west in order to get back over the German trenches, but as he was at only 2,000 feet altitude he dived across them for greater speed, Donald firing into the trenches as he passed over. The German fire, however, damaged the petrol tank, and, with great coolness, Lieutenant Insall landed under cover of a wood 500 yards inside our lines. The Germans fired some 150 shells at our machine on the ground, but without causing material damage. Much damage had, however, been caused by rifle fire, but during the night it was repaired behind screened lights, and at dawn Lieutenant Insall flew his machine home with First Class Air Mechanic T. H. Donald as a passenger. Insall could not personally receive his VC, however; he and Donald had fallen wounded into captivity on 14 December 1915 after engaging Hauptmann Martin Zander and his gunner. While in captivity, he was promoted to lieutenant, on 1 April 1916. Insall escaped on his third try, on 28 August 1917, and made it home over the Dutch border on 6 September. He returned to duty as the Flight Commander of A Flight, 50 Squadron, with the temporary rank of captain, on 11 January 1918. Good Condition. All signed items come with our certificate of authenticity. We combine postage on multiple winning lots and can ship worldwide. UK postage from £3.95, EU from £4.95, Overseas from £6.95

A late Victorian wooden hand operated fairground carousel or merry-go-round, circa 1895, last used at Nottingham Goose Fair in 1979, featuring individually-carved ponies and peacocks plus two peacock chariots and comes with full provenance. Made in Burton On Trent, Staffordshire, a town famous for its beer, by George Orton, Sons and Spooner of Swan Works for Fred Westrope in 1895.Provenance:According to historical documents found with the item, it was the only ten-section, three-abreast carousel ever built and, apart from redecoration, is exactly as it was back in the days when Queen Victoria was on the English throne. The ride is approximately 18ft in diameter and features 12 ponies and six peacocks along with the peacock chariots, which can carry nine children in each. No two figures are the same and they are all suspended on twisted, brass-covered iron rods. It also features mirrors ceilings and a mirrored centre. When Fed Westrope owned the ride it was taken to fairs around the Midlands for him by the Meakin family and was a regular visitor at Burton's statutes fair. It was later bought by a Mrs West and taken to fairs in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Later it passed to Jimmy Fantom and travelled around fairs with his family for 46 years. After its final appearance at Nottingham Goose Fair in 1979, it passed to Burton couple George and Joyce Mander who restored it to its former glory and took it along to steam rallies and vintage fairs. The historical notes tell us that every effort was made to retain its Victorian authenticity during the painstaking restoration. Rides such as this demanded ornate carving, decorative brackets and other embellishments which required great skill. In time, the demand for speedier, more thrilling rides heralded their demise.Offered with an extensive archive of images, including those of it in use at events.Estimate Upon Request
