Rosenthal (1935-2014) became head of Secker & Warburg in 1971 and identified Warren as a writer long-neglected in the UK. During a weekend at the author's house in Connecticut, Rosenthal raised his criticism of the author's most famous work All the King's Men. The author noted that it was likely that Rosenthal had read the English rather than US edition which had cut a key chapter. Warren found a copy of the book on his shelves, inscribed it to Rosenthal and left him to read it (this copy included in the lot). Rosenthal realised the error made in publishing shortened version and promptly undertook to published the full version in the UK. A 1940's Naval officer's peaked cap with King's crown badge, together with service dress jacket with WWII medal bars. Provenance: Previously belonged to George Eric Ray (Sub. Lt. G E Ray, RNVR) who is now aged 97. He was called up in October 1943 and selected for officer training in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve (RNVR) - the Wavy Navy. Further selected for Landing Craft, which came within the realm of Combined Operations, he was despatched to various locations along the west coast of Scotland for training, including Commando Training (because if a landing craft was hit on landing, everyone went forward!). He joined his first craft as First Lieutenant (there being only two officers, the Captain and the 1st Lt. or second-in-command), a tank landing craft LCT952, on the Medina River on the Isle of Wight on D Day + 1 (i.e. 7 June 1944) and then spent the following 12 weeks continually ferrying tanks and their crews from various destinations along the south coast to the Normandy Beaches. After a spell on the River Thames (where landing craft were tethered line abreast directly over the line of Tube Lines under the Thames, so that if a V1 Rocket (Doodlebugs) should land in the river, it would explode on a landing craft and not on the river bed), LCT952 sailed to Belgium in readiness for Operation Infatuate Early in the morning of 1 November 1944, some 15 days before his 20th birthday, and without the promised air cover (because of fog over East Anglia) his flotilla of landing craft successfully landed their units under heavy fire from concrete German gun emplacements.

Brügger Meister, um 1510/ 1520KREUZABNAHME CHRISTI Öl auf Holz. 111 x 109 cm. In teilvergoldetem profiliertem Rahmen. Rest. Christ’s resurrection is shown in the background on the left, while the middle ground on the right shows his appearance before Mary Magdalene, who initially thinks he is a gardener. An idealized representation of Jerusalem can be seen behind the cross, connecting the two scenes in the middle ground. The style and concept of the painting on offer for sale here follows the example of Rogier van der Weyden, as does a painting attributed to Joos van Cleve (RKD no. 42467) held at the Philadelphia Museum of Art inv. no. 373 (see comparison image). Essentially, the painters of the American painting and the present painting follow the compositional model of Rogier van der Weyden held at the Prado (inv. no. P002825), while the gold background – as in paintings by Joos van Cleve – is replaced by a 16th century Flemish-style landscape. Restored.

Paul Bril, um 1553/54 Breda – 1626 Rom, zug.BEWEGTE LANDSCHAFT MIT VERSCHATTETEM HÜGEL UND SCHAFHIRTEN Öl auf Leinwand. Wachsdoubliert. A.R. A. R.Literatur: Vgl. Rodolfo Pallucchini, La pittura nel Veneto. The figure staffage is interesting as it documents the hustle and bustle on the square during the 18th century. There are pairs of men each leading a bull onto the square on long leads, which catch the attention of the remaining noble and bourgeois onlookers. This is testimony to the bullfights held on various squares around Venice during the 18th century.Literature: cf. Rodolfo Pallucchini, La pittura nel Veneto. Erg. The bouquet can be conceived as a painted gift for a person´s name day, as the four-line pencil inscription in the right lower corner suggests. Typed label in English on the reverse: “For Thomas/ for his birthday/ you have so often revived one who was half dead./ With love/ your O.K. 44/ London”. This is probably an early translation into English. Next to the label there is a gallery label with printed address “Charles E. Slutkin Galleries/ 115 East Ninetysecond Street/ New York 28, N.Y.”. Typed inscription “Oskar Kokoschka (1886)/ Flower Arrangement with Birds of Paradise. Watercolor”. Furthermore, two smaller labels with insignificant information.Notes:The dedication is almost certainly to “János” who is János Plesch . He was a rather eccentric doctor working in London. He treated Kokoschka and hence the wording.

Dambuster 617 Squadron F/O Ray Grayston signed Training for the Dams 617 Squadron Practice Operations FDC PM 617 Squadron 65th Anniversary The Dambusters Southampton Lincoln. Raymond Ernest Grayston was born on 13 October 1918 in Dunsfold, Surrey, and worked as an automobile engineer before the war. Like many young men of his generation, Grayston was fascinated by flying and volunteered for the RAF at the beginning of the war. In a TV documentary to mark the 60th anniversary of the Dams Raid he described how he loved riding a motorbike at speed, and that this was one of the things which encouraged him into the air force. Initially he served as ground crew but then, along with many others who were mechanically minded, he was selected to train as a flight engineer on the new generation of heavy bombers which needed more personnel. He was posted to 50 Squadron in October 1942, and teamed up with Les Knight, who had just formed a new crew. He flew on some 18 operations with this crew before they were posted en bloc to 617 Squadron in March 1943. Good condition. All autographs come with a Certificate of Authenticity. Gerard Dillon (1916-1971)Moonlight Scene, West of Ireland Oil on canvas, 30.5 x 40.5cm (12 x 16'')SignedProvenance: Acquired directly from the artist by his friend, Ms. Sally Devlin; sale, Whyte's, Dublin 22/11/17, lot 40; private collection.Dillon has created a beautiful lunar scene of a west Ireland inlet, with the moon slowly rising, orb-like, over the still and silent bay. it illuminates the sky, casting bright rays, picked out in white highlights against the deep blue. We see a lone figure in the centre of the composition, walking back along the traditional patchwork stone walls towards the thatched cottages in the distance. He appears to be carrying a fishing rod over his shoulder, perhaps on a journey back from a session of night-fishing. There is a single black cow grazing behind him, picked out against the green and blues of the landscape. While it is a relatively small work, the sense of distance is well executed. As the viewer we feel as if we are standing on the grassy plain in the foreground looking over across the inlet to the figure in the background. His clever use of colour subtly separates land from sea and sky. The inland waterways and tributaries wind in and out around the island, leading us out into the larger bay and sea beyond. He uses quick, flat strokes of white to delineate the varying tones in the natural stone walls. We get a sense of a place on the edge of the world, picturesque but isolated. We are reminded of the hardships of living on a remote island with little or no connection to the mainland. It is reminiscent of another work sold in these rooms in 2019, Moonstruck Youth, of a local fisherman standing barefoot after finishing his work for the day. it is a very different view from that of other artists who were also transfixed by this particular landscape. While the beauty is still there, it is a more honest and melancholic expression. Yet it was also a place that Dillon loved to visit, enjoying many happy holidays on the island of Aran, following a more primitive and peaceful way of life.Niamh Corcoran, February 2022
