Edward Bilbie, Chew Stoke. A rare William & Mary thirty-hour musical longcase clock, circa 1695, the substantial three-train posted movement with four square section brass pillars riveted into the base plate and secured via brass nuts at the top plate, with verge escapement, outside countwheel bell strike and music playing every three hours via a 2.75 inch pinned cylinder on eight bells with twelve hammers, the movement raised on four steel spurs, the 9.5 inch square brass dial engraved with leafy tulip trails around a formal flowerhead and signed 'Edward Bilbie Fecit' to centre, within an applied Roman numeral chapter ring with stylised trident half hour markers and foliate cast winged cherub head pattern spandrel applied angles, now in a walnut veneered case with ogee cornice over rectangular door to hood and narrow trunk with slender door, on plinth base, 203cm high. Edward Bilbie is thought to have learnt the clockmaking trade from Edward Webb, who died in 1694. Bilbie started casting bells in 1698 and it is highly probable that he was making clocks by this time. This clock bears a very strong resemblance to an example by Edward Webb (as discussed in Moore, A J 'The Clockmakers of Somerset 1650-1900' Appendix vii) thus may well be one of the first clocks made by Edward Bilbie. The level of decoration and attention to detail lavished on the arbors, collets and other parts of the clock indicates a great deal of pride by the maker, possibly supporting a theory that this may well be his masterpiece. The movement and dial have survived in remarkable original condition, however the case is almost certainly associated but of the period with later veneers.

A RARE CAPTAIN BOGARDUS PATENT BALL TRAP, circa 1877, 17in.wood base with sprung release arm with cup and trade mark plaque Captain A.H. Bogardus was one of the most successful shots of his time, holding various world titles for competition shooting, whilst being a regular performer in Buffalo Bill's Wild West (alongside his with his three young sons who joined the act at the ages of just nine, eleven and thirteen.) He is noted for his improved version of a trap used to launch glass balls designed as flying targets. These became popular with exhibition and competition shots who adopted them as an alternative to live pigeons. One of Bogardus' most extraordinary feats came in January of 1878, when he set out to hit 5,000 glass balls in 500 minutes. His attempt began at approx. 2:00pm and continued until 10:30pm, with just three breaks. He achieved his goal with 19 minutes to spare, and against the 5,000 confirmed hits, just 163 misses were recorded.

A RARE GREEN GLASS BALL TARGET OF BOGARDUS TYPE, rough-glass with graduated diamond pattern, with two roundels of a man with gun mounted in the shoulder. Captain Bogardus was a great advocate of glass-ball shooting, insisting against contemporary opinion that it would not interfere with wing shooting, but was in fact a great asset in improving one's all round skill. In his excellent book, 'Field, Cover, And Trap Shooting' (1878), Bogardus predicts that "Glass-ball shooting is destined to become popular, as a great many men who never care to shoot birds from a trap are becoming interested in glass-ball shooting, and a great many sportsmen prefer them for sweepstake shooting, as they afford more even shooting, and shooters have the satisfaction of knowing their opponents have no easy birds".
