Russell led a team of engineers in the 1960s that produced the supersonic passenger airliner, which can fly at 1,350 m.p.h. Many see the Concorde as the most elegant plane ever built, with its long, pointed nose and streamlined features. Its creators realized early on that in order for a supersonic plane to carry anything and do much more than fly it would have to be huge. The loads were enormous and it had to be a very light structure, and Russell was the foremost structural man in world aviation, his colleague Barrie Bailey-Watson said. VERY RARE CRICKET: Clipping from a letter with the signature of Ranjitsinhji GCSI GBE 10 September 1872 - 2 April 1933,often known as Ranji, was the ruler of the Indian princely state of Nawanagar from 1907 to 1933, as Maharaja Jam Saheb, and a noted Test cricketer who played for the English cricket team. He also played first-class cricket for Cambridge University, and county cricket for Sussex. Ranji has widely been regarded as one of the greatest batsmen of all time. Neville Cardus described him as the Midsummer nights dream of cricket. Unorthodox in technique and with fast reactions, he brought a new style to batting and revolutionised the game. Previously, batsmen had generally pushed forward; Ranji took advantage of the improving quality of pitches in his era and played more on the back foot, both in defence and attack. He is particularly associated with one shot, the leg glance, which he invented or popularised. VERY VERY RARE!. Good condition. All signed items come with our certificate of authenticity. A 19th Century Seaman's chest, iron bound with treated canvas covering, the rising top bearing brass plaque inscribed "Captn Graves R.N." opening to reveal a paper lined interior over a heavy lock plate inscribed "Registd No 3637 E & W Seagrove's" (makers) and two small lockable drawers (Provenance : Captain Thomas Graves whilst Superintendent of Ports at Malta was attacked by seamen Giuseppe Meli and died of his injuries August 28th 1856, 3 days after the attack. For full provenance please see condition report online) CONDITION REPORTS Thomas Graves was born in Belfast, and joined the Royal Navy in 1816 when he was just 14 years old. In 1827 he was promoted to lieutenant and served aboard HMS Adventure, where he surveyed the Patagonian coastline and traded commodities for artefacts with the tribes of the Tierra del Fuego. As Lieutenant Commander he surveyed the Mediterranean aboard HMS Mastiff and HMS Beacon. In 1846 he was promoted to Captain, and took charge of HMS Volage and HMS Ceylon. And in 1853, at the age of 51, he was handed a new command - Superintendent of Ports at Malta. But in 1856, tragedy struck. He had ordered a boat belonging to Giuseppe Meli to be hauled up for 15 days for overcharging a passenger. While hauled up, the planks of the boat dried rendering the vessel unseaworthy, and Meli's livelihood was ruined. Seeking revenge he stabbed Captain Graves in the abdomen, perforating his small bowel. Graves was treated by two local doctors who, unable to assess the depth of the wound, dressed it and sent him home. At his residence he was visited by an English doctor and an army surgeon. He died at his residence in Floriana on August 28 - three days after the attack.Meli was arrested for murder, but during his trial his lawyer convinced the court that it was the negligent treatment administered to him by the doctors - rather than the knife - that killed Captain Graves. With the jury finding him guilty of severe bodily harm, the court sentenced Meli to nine years' hard labour. The oak iron-bound trunk was made by E & W Seagrove, naval outfitters of Portsea, near Portsmouth. It bears a brass plaque to the lid engraved Cpt Graves RN

Size is 21.5cm high (to tip of thumbpiece) x 12cm diameter widest part of the width on the bottom of the foot. This darker area is a white metal stud that is in relief in the inside of the Tankard and if you look on the outside of the Tankard where it starts from there is an exotic bird perched on a cresting and the stud appears to start through the birds head and continues to the inside of the Tankard. Scarr who examined the case back and concluded that it was engraved using a pantograph and that in his opinion the Navy Seal inscription was very likely engraved at the point of issue to the U.S. Navy in 1968 (this letter can be made available upon request). - NAVAL SPECIAL WARFARE GROUP (Navy Seals) - President John F. Kennedy, aware of the situation in Southeast Asia, recognised the need for unconventional warfare and special operations as a measure against guerrilla warfare. In March 1961, Admiral Arleigh Burke, the Chief of Naval Operations, recommended the establishment of guerrilla and counter-guerrilla units. These units would be able to operate from sea, air or land. This was the beginning of the Navy SEALs. The first two teams were formed in January 1962 and stationed on both US coasts: Team ONE at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, in San Diego, California and Team TWO at Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek, in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Formed entirely with personnel from UDTs, the SEALs mission was to conduct counter guerilla warfare and clandestine operations in maritime and riverine environments. - Condition Report: - Movement - currently working.
