From the wine cellar of a historical restaurant on the Tuscan hills. Giuseppe Mazzocolin, Domenico Poggiali’s son-in-law, who bought the Fattoria in 1966, was the soul and the inspirer of the excellent wines this company has been producing since the Eighties. Giuseppe really trusted both this land, situated at the Southern end of the Classic Chianti appellation, and the Sangiovese vine, which he put at the centre of his project. Fontalloro is his masterpiece; it expresses the fruity warmth of this territory, as well as its unrivalled elegance. JAMES FERGUSON (FL. 1755-1775): A FINE 3IN. POCKET GLOBE, signed A New GLOBE of the Earth by James Ferguson / J. Mynde Sc. twelve hand-coloured gores with details including Australia styled ‘New Holland’, Tasmania attached to mainland, tracks for Anson’s ‘Going Out’ and ‘Return’ and for Endeavour (1770), Africa labelled ‘Country of the Cafres’ and ‘Country of the Hotentots’, divided equator and eclipse lines and other details, finished in varnish and contained in fishskin-covered case of issue lined with hand-coloured celestial gores and secured with brass hooks -- 3¼in. A FINELY DETAILED 1:48 SCALE MODEL OF THE ‘TOWN’ CLASS LIGHT CRUISER H.M.S. SHEFFIELD [1936], modelled by P. Oakley, the carved, plated and painted hull with lined paper decks, detailed fittings, superstructure and armament as appropriate mounted on wooden cradle stand within Plexiglas case. Cased measurements -- 21¾ x 77 x 9¾in. (55 x 195.5 x 24.5cm.), Built by Vickers Armstrong, launched in 1936 and completed a year later, Sheffield displaced over eleven thousand tons when fully loaded and was, appropriately, finished with stainless steel fittings rather than traditional brass; Whilst this was an effort to reduce the need for constant and time-consuming polishing by the crew (who nick-named her ‘Shiny Sheff’), the fact she was built with the financial support of her named-town and the home of stainless steel was highly appropriate. Involved in hostilities immediately on the outbreak of War in 1939, she assisted in three famous battleship actions - Bismarck; Scharnhorst and Tirpitz as well as several other significant actions, landings and campaigns. Her busy post-War life included a stint masquerading as Ajax in the film The Battle of the River Plate, before she went into reserve, finally being broken up in 1967. This lot will be available for viewing at Imperial Road,
THE BUILDER’S ¼IN.: 1FT. SCALE HALF-BLOCK MODEL FOR THE LEGENDARY TEA CLIPPER THERMOPYLÆ, BUILT FOR G. THOMPSON & CO BY WALTER HOOD, ABERDEEN, 1868, carved from 5?8in. laminated yellow pine with black-painted topsides, rudder, carved warrior-form figurehead and cut-away masts, mounted on wooden display board with nameplate inscribed CHINA CLIPPER “THERMOPYLÆ” / ABERDEEN LINE, and brass builder’s plate engraved THERMOPYLÆ / 212 x 36 x 21. / 947 TONS. / WALTER HOOD & Co. / ABERDEEN / 1868 -- 10½ x 50½in. (26.5 x 128cm.), Provenance: Walter Hood & Co. Builders, and thence by descent. Thermopylæ was built in Walter Hood’s yards in Aberdeen in 1868, to the order of George Thompson & Co of London. Designed by Bernard Waymouth, she was 212 feet long and registered at 947 tons (net). A splendid sea boat, she was fast in any weather and especially quick at going to windward. Launched on 19th August 1868, she sailed from Gravesend on her maiden voyage to Melbourne on 7th November the same year. Anchoring in Port Phillip after a record run of 60 days (pilot to pilot), she went straight on to Newcastle, NSW, to load cargo for Shanghai. Crossing the Pacific in another record passage of 28 days, she then proceeded to Foochow to load tea. In the race home, she narrowly missed setting the record time for the year, and this first voyage set the standard for her entire career. Continuing to make extremely fast passages throughout the 1870s, she loaded her final tea cargo at Foochow in 1881, before being transferred to the Australian wool route. During the 1880s, she frequently raced her old tea-trade rival Cutty Sark from Sydney to London, via Cape Horn. Her best passage was 76 days in 1882, although Cutty Sark, who revelled in the stronger winds of the southern hemisphere, was generally quicker. In 1890 Thermopylæ was sold to Canadian owners for £5,000 and from 1892 to 1895 she was used in the trans Pacific trade. In 1896 she was resold to the Portuguese Government, renamed Pedro Nunes and put to work as a cadet training ship. Her condition deteriorated gradually and by 1907 her working life was over. On 13th October that year, she was towed out of the Tagus into the open sea and sunk by gunfire; it was a sad end for such a thoroughbred as she. Considered by many to have been the fastest clipper of them all, there were even those who believed her to be the fastest sailing vessel ever launched. Whatever the truth of the claims, she was - and has remained - one of the legends of the age of sail.

A WORLD WAR II DISTINGUISHED FLYING MEDAL Awarded to R.A.F. Sergeant Ronald Herbert Payne (also known as Ron), who flew over twenty operations as an Air Gunner from 1943. He received the medal (Predecessor of the Distinguished Flying Cross) following a flight to Germany, November, 1944, at the age of 21. His aeroplane was attacked and Ron succeeded in shooting down the Junkers plane involved before following the rest of the crew and parachuting from his own burning aircraft. He and a fellow Air Gunner were assisted by the Dutch Underground, taken to the nearest allied base and were given a lift by an American General flying his Dakota to London. Meanwhile, Ron had been reported Missing in Action to his family in Great Haseley (near Oxford), who were naturally over the moon on his safe return days later. He survived the war against extraordinary odds, suffering gunshot wounds and burns and earning Membership of The Caterpillar Club (for Parachutists) in the process, to live out the rest of his life peacefully in Oxfordshire. The medal comes with contemporary artefacts, to include a Caterpillar Club Badge & Certificate, an R.A.F. cloth badge and decal and supporting paperwork, including the King's letter of congratulations, R.A.F. letters to the family, telegram and postagram from Bomber Command, an R.A.F Service and Release Book, Transport Command from Brussels to the UK and photographs of Ronald, consigned by the family.
RUSSIAN AKM Type II Bayonet, The improved AKM Type II bayonet was introduced in the mid-1960s and brought with it two significant changes. A squared-off steel pommel was added, to address the fragile nature of the Type I's bulbous plastic pommel. Revolutionary as it was, the Type I design couldn't change soldiers, who seem naturally inclined to use the pommel as a hammer. The second major change was a new scabbard. Advances in plastics technology had reached the point where the scabbard body could be made of molded plastic, with only a metal end for the wirecutter. This eliminated the need for a rubber insulator, as the plastic scabbard body was non-conductive.
