EXCALIBUR (1981) - Sir John Boorman’s Personally Received Merlin’s (Nicol Williamson) Production Gift HelmetA Senior crew gift of Merlin's (Nicol Williamson) helmet personally gifted to Sir John Boorman from the production of his fantasy epic Excalibur. Merlin (Nicol Williamson) wore his helmet throughout the film as he guided and advised Arthur Pendragon (Nigel Terry). This helmet is one of a very small number made as senior executive gifts by celebrated British armourer Terry English, who also created the production-used helmet. Its imaginative design was fundamental in helping Williamson create the character, as he was reluctant to shave his head bald for filming.Hand-beaten from aluminium, this skullcap-style helmet was custom-made for the actor. It is polished to a smooth shine and adorned with a silver-coloured emblem on the forehead. The interior is painted black with a handwritten inscription in silver-coloured ink reading, "To John, Enjoy, From Terry" and faded reference number. English's signature "T" stamp is below the left ear. The helmet remains highly polished with some very light surface tarnishing. FREDDY VS. JASON (2003) - Jason Voorhees' (Ken Kirzinger) Screen-matched Battle-damaged Hockey Mask and CowlJason's (Ken Kirzinger) screen-matched battle-damaged hockey mask and cowl from Ronny Yu's horror sequel Freddy Vs. Jason. Jason wore his iconic hockey mask throughout the film as he terrorised teenagers and battled Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund). The mask matches the one on-screen at the end of the film as Jason sinks slowly into the water through the scarring and damage inflicted upon it. It can also be matched to a promotional image from the film. The resin and fibreglass mask features leather straps with metal buckles, and has foam padding on the inside for the actor's comfort. The right eye hole features a section of Jason's face and his damaged right eye built into the mask. The damaged eye was originally mistakenly attached to the left eye and the mistake was noticed a few days into filming, meaning those shots had to be flipped in post-production. The remnants of the glue around the left eye remains. The hockey mask has also been autographed on the inside by Ken Kirzinger and stunt performer Douglas Tait, who has also inscribed "Give me back my Dam [sic] mask!"The cowl is made of foam rubber and was intended to act as a dark frame around the hockey mask, allowing the mask to "pop". Handwritten notes inside indicate it was originally a hero version but was changed to a stunt version during production. The mask has cracked most notably on the right side but the pieces still adhere to the foam lining. The foam rubber cowl has become dry and flaky and remains in a fragile condition. The lot is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from New Line Cinema. Dimensions (mask): 24.5 cm x 17 cm x 11 cm (9 3/4" x 6 3/4" x 4 1/4")Additional Provenance:This lot comes from the personal collection of Friday the 13th collector and historian Mario Kirner. FREDDY VS. JASON (2003) - Freddy Krueger's (Robert Englund) GloveFreddy Krueger's (Robert Englund) glove from Ronny Yu's horror crossover Freddy Vs. Jason. Freddy wore his iconic glove throughout the film as he terrorised Lori (Monica Keena) and her friends, and then faced off against Jason Voorhees (Ken Kirzinger). The glove was originally designed and created by Jim Doyle, the mechanical special effects designer of Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street. When he asked Craven for guidance on the design, the director said, "It's kind of like real long fingernails. I want the glove to look like something that someone could make who has the skills of a boilermaker, because this guy worked in a boiler room."This glove is made of tan-coloured leather with soot and light stage-blood markings. The tips and palm of the glove have been cut off, and a blade assembly has been fitted, comprising tarnished copper finger caps with a single pivot point, riveted to a backplate that is fixed to the glove's rear. Made for use in the film's fight scenes, the claws are made of resin, painted to resemble steel and secured to the tips of the fingers with glue and wire, which provides a strong hold, but allows for simple replacement in the event of breakages. The glove shows production-applied distress, including scratches on the metal fingers and backplate, to give it a battle-worn appearance. Small dots have been drilled into the glove to create the illusion of weld splatter from its creation during the opening montage. However, it shows some unintentional wear, including repairs to the ring-finger claw, a replaced rivet in the little finger's claw mount and fraying to the stitching throughout. The glove comes on a custom-built display stand and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from New Line Cinema. Dimensions (displayed): 27 cm x 17 cm x 32.5 cm (10 1/2" x 6 3/4" x 12 3/4") Estimate: £25,000 - 35,000 MThis lot will be auctioned on Thursday, November 3rd. GLADIATOR (2000) - Maximus' Screen-matched 'Proximo' CuirassMaximus Decimus Meridius' (Russell Crowe) cuirass from Ridley Scott's historical epic Gladiator. Antonius Proximo (Oliver Reed) gave his cuirass to Maximus after Maximus agreed to "win the crowd" at the Colosseum. This cuirass screen-matches the scene where Proximo picked up the cuirass and threw it to Maximus, who caught and inspected it. The cuirass comprises a breastplate, a backplate and two leather straps that sit laterally under each arm. Made of formed dark brown leather, the cuirass features moulded abdominal and pectoral muscles and faux-silver breastplate embellishments showing two sejant griffins and a laurel wreath. The breastplate connects to the backplate at the shoulders via leather cords that are tied into punched holes, and above the hips via dual leather buckles. The underarm leather straps connect to the breastplate and backplate via leather cord tied to hidden metal brackets. The film's costume designer Janty Yates stated that 12 sets of armour were created for Maximus, and that it was Crowe's idea to add silver embellishments to the cuirass breastplate. As Maximus won more gladiatorial contests later in the film, further icons appeared on his breastplate. The cuirass has been intentionally weathered and remains in very good condition. HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE (2005) - Gryffindor RobeA Gryffindor robe from Mike Newell's fantasy-adventure sequel Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. At various points during the film, students of Hogwarts wore their robes as part of their school uniform. This black hooded robe, sized "S", features the embroidered Gryffindor House badge on its left chest and two button-loop fastenings at the front. Two handwritten labels attached to the lining read "37G" and "Length 36"". The robe exhibits faint stains from production use.Additional Provenance: The robe was gifted to seven-year-old Alba Diaferia, who, as part of a visit arranged by the Make A Wish Foundation, spent a day with the cast members on the Warner Bros film set at Leavesden Studios. HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS (2000) - The Grinch's (Jim Carrey) Light-Up Full-Size SleighThe Grinch's (Jim Carrey) light-up full-size sleigh from Ron Howard's holiday comedy How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The Grinch had a change of heart after stealing all of the Christmas presents in Whoville, saving them, along with Cindy Lou Who (Taylor Momsen), from falling off Mount Crumpit on his enormous sleigh. Based on the original illustrations of Dr. Seuss and acquired from Universal by Arizona Picture Cars after production concluded, this oversized, multi-media sleigh is thought to be one of only two full-size sleighs created by production for use in the climactic sequence. It features a combination of found objects and electronic elements surrounding an inflatable red velvet-lined Santa-style gift sack centrepiece designed to appear constructed from patchwork. The sleigh's base is constructed from metal with various electronics, including fans, hair dryers, false piping, and a medley of functional head and front lights, affixed to the front. The top features a grated metal seat with a steering mechanism for the performer. The sack is wrapped with various Whoville decor, including a pink plastic toy tricycle with a missing wheel, a sign hand-painted "Merry Merry" by production, strands of green, gold, and silver tinsel, glittering plastic tree ornaments, and a dangling bushel of prop bananas. The sack inflates automatically on low, medium, or high settings via a 110v power plug concealed amidst the machinery.Following production, this sleigh was decommissioned and its propane tanks were emptied by Ghost Ride Productions. It was also mounted to a removable metal tongue for transportation. The sleigh's other mechanics are intentionally distressed to appear rusty and well-used, and it exhibits bent metal, scratching, and staining throughout from use by production and as a Christmas display following filming. STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE (1977) - Hand-Drawn Alex Tavoularis Female Luke and Darth Vader Concept SketchesConcept sketches of a female Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader hand-drawn by Alex Tavoularis during early pre-production on George Lucas' Star Wars: A New Hope. In his second draft of the script from March 1975, Lucas changed Skywalker - then known as "Luke Starkiller" - to a female character. But in the following draft, he split the character into two - Luke and Princess Leia - suggesting that these rare sketches were completed by Tavoularis, an illustrator and industrial artist who created early concept storyboards, prior to the third draft. Rendered in graphite on vellum, these three concept sketches - one of Luke wearing a face apparatus labelled "Luke at Alderaan"; one of a bare-faced female Luke; and one of Darth Vader - come from the collection of the film's advertising and publicity supervisor Charles "Charley" Lippincott. The vellum exhibits smudging, stray marks, and staining. Dimensions: 21.75 cm x 28 cm (8.5" x 11")Sold without copyright; see notice in the Buyer's Guide.Lots in this section of the auction come from the collection of Charles “Charley” Lippincott. Lippincott is considered among the foremost marketing and merchandising experts in the history of fantasy and science-fiction. After an early start in traditional Hollywood publicity, his career exploded when college friend George Lucas hired him as Lucasfilm’s VP of Advertising, Publicity, Promotion & Merchandising, a role he used to create arguably the most successful – and bombastic – marketing campaign ever for Lucas’ 1977 blockbuster Star Wars. Lippincott subsequently masterminded the publicity strategies for such era-defining properties as Ridley Scott’s Alien and Mike Hodges’ Flash Gordon. The popularity of these projects further propelled him into the top ranks of film executives, leading him to produce Danny Cannon’s cult classic Judge Dredd. While Charley Lippincott passed away in 2020, his personal collection of rare unseen production and marketing materials reflects a legacy of influence on some of cinema’s most memorable titles. All auction registrants will also be entered into a random giveaway drawing to win a T-shirt or brochure produced by Lippincott for the 2016 convention MidAmeriCon 2 (“MAC II”) which re-united Gary Kurtz, Alan Dean Foster, Marc Pevers, and Gary Kurtz. The giveaway is made possible by Lippincott’s estate. Estimate: £6,000 - 8,000 Ω This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, November 3rd.
