1985 Land Rover 90 V8 County Station Wagon 4x4Registration no. D216 CRWChassis no. SALLDVBV7AA233483Odometer reading: 38,900MOT: 27/10/21*Former Land Rover factory demonstrator*Exceptionally original and unmolested*Present ownership for 19 years*Only 38,000 warranted miles from new To view a video of this lot please click hereFootnotes:Offered here is one of the very first production Land Rover 90 V8s: a short-wheelbase County seven-seater station wagon with the early 'lift door handles'. Other notable features include Alpine roof lights; top-of-the-range cloth trim; brown carpeting; the five-speed gearbox; and power steering. This quite exceptional vehicle has covered a mere 38,000 warranted miles from new and is totally original, with galvanised capping and unpainted rivets, just as it left the factory. An extremely rare find, it was featured as the cover story by Land Rover Enthusiast in May 2002 and again ten years later. This example left the factory on 28th March 1985, prior to the 90 V8's official announcement, and it remained unregistered until 17th September 1986. During those 18 months, the vehicle remained the property of Land Rover Ltd and was used as a factory demonstrator before being registered as 'D216 CRW', a recognised factory registration. It was acquired in 2002 by the vendor, who is responsible for 21,000 of the 38,000 miles recorded. His first job was to commission the superior full under-body protection offered by 'Before N After' in Newbury. Never re-sprayed and totally original, 'D216 CRW' comes with the original road wheels as well as a set of Wolf Land Rover wheels and tyres as shown. A four-barrel Holley 390 carburettor, sports manifolds and a stainless steel exhaust are the only improvements made.Vendor Score Total: 92/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. 1933 Sunbeam 23.8hp 'Folding Head' CoupéRegistration no. SN169Chassis no. 7112ROdometer reading: TBCMOT: Exempt*One of only 14 produced*Known ownership history*Expertly maintained by Dr Jim CatnachFootnotes:One of 14 produced, of which only two are known to survive, this handsome Sunbeam 23.8hp Folding Head Coupé comes with an extensive history file. The history of 'SN 169' has been well researched by a previous owner, John Tomsett, and is recounted in his article in the STD Register Journal of winter 2009 (copy on file and well worth a read). Mr Tomsett's research revealed that the Sunbeam's first owner was David Johnstone-Smith, a wealthy Scottish accountant. When Mr Johnstone-Smith passed away, the Sunbeam was sold to his local doctor, Dr Thomas Collier-Findlay. Circa 1955/56, 'SN 169' was purchased by Malcolm Templeton. In 1970 Mr Templeton sold the Sunbeam and it was purchased in the 1990s by Tony Howarth. 'SN 169' then passed through a number of dealers in the North West including Mark Prosser in Altrincham, who had the car re-commissioned by Merlin Classics. From John Aitkins the car passed to Peter Webb in 1992, remaining with him until purchased by John Tomsett. The current owner, a Sunbeam enthusiast, acquired 'SN 169' in 2012 and has enjoyed it with his family as well as the odd excursion at Goodwood (photographs on file). During this time, the car has been expertly maintained by the guru of pre-war Sunbeams, Dr Jim Catnach of Lincolnshire, with invoices for his work on file together with numerous photographs of previous restoration works. Property of a deceased's estate1933 Lagonda 16/80 Tourer ProjectRegistration no. ALK 287Chassis no. S10444Odometer reading: N/AMOT: Exempt*One of only 260 made*Believed off the road since the 1960s*Offered for restorationFootnotes:Based on the chassis of the preceding 2-Litre Continental four-cylinder model, whose overall style and good looks it retained, the six-cylinder 16/80 was new for the 1933 season. The 16/80 employed a 1,991cc overhead-valve Crossley engine, reworked by Lagonda to its own specification, and could be ordered with a conventional four-speed manual or pre-selector transmission enabling swift and easy changes. Autocar liked Lagonda's new medium-size model (which took its name from its 16hp RAC rating and 80mph top speed) remarking on its silence, smoothness, brisk acceleration and effortless high-speed cruising. Approximately 260 were made, of which it is believed around half survive. The attached tax disc expiring in 1965 may be an indication of when this example was last used. 'ALK 287' was purchased in 1968 by the late owner, who dreamed of returning the car to former glory, although that ambition had to wait until he retired. An 'at home' restoration was commenced at least 15 years ago, the car being dismantled but little progress made. Other commitments again took precedence, and the project had proceeded no further when the owner died last year. The chassis is sound and the bodywork fundamentally straight, though the car's mechanical condition is not known. Offered for restoration, the Lagonda comes with a handbook, old-style logbooks, and a letter from a previous owner. Sold strictly as viewed.Vendor Score Total: 24/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. 1952 Daimler DB18 Special Sports Drophead CoupéRegistration no. 375 YUHChassis no. 59083Odometer reading: 1,475MOT: Exempt*Extensively restored example*Winner of best car in show at Tatton Park in 2016*Large history file with original handbooksFootnotes:Development of the pre-war Daimler Fifteen culminated with the DB18 model announced for 1939. Independent suspension appeared for the first time on a Daimler and the DB18 featured an enlarged, 2,522cc version of the overhead-valve six first introduced in 1933. Daimler's customary fluid flywheel, pre-selector gearbox and worm drive rear axle comprised the transmission. A new drophead coupé appeared at the first post-war London Motor Show in 1948: the DB18 Special Sports. Stylish in a most un-Daimler-like manner, the Special Sports featured coachwork by Barker, the latter, like Daimler and fellow coachbuilders Hooper, being one of the BSA Group's many companies. The radiator grille was now curved, the alloy-panelled coachwork more streamlined, and the Special Sports benefited from hydro-mechanical braking and a power output raised to 85bhp courtesy of twin carburettors. In short: a model combining all the usual Daimler refinements with increased performance. When DB18 production ceased in 1953, only 500-or-so of these elegant and refined Special Sports roadsters had been completed.Subject to a body off restoration, this 1952 example is finished in red over silver with a beige leather interior and a beige hood. There is a large history file included that contains its original handbook, invoices, bills, and a photographic record of the restoration. Previously domiciled overseas, the car was UK registered in January 2012 under the non-transferable registration mark 375 YUH. The car was then purchased by the previous owner who kept the car for eight years and entered it into the 2016 Tatton Park show, where it won an award for the best car (the trophy of which is included in the sale). The current owner purchased the car in 2020 since purchase there has been a further £7,500 spent on the car. This is a delightfully elegant car to be used and enjoyed.Vendor Score Total: 90/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. 1934 Bentley 3½-Litre Drophead CoupéCoachwork by Park WardRegistration no. CG 9065Chassis no. B115BLEngine no. N4BOOdometer reading: TBCMOT: Exempt*Present ownership since 1968*Known ownership history from new*An older (1990s) restoration by FiennesTo view a video of this lot please click hereFootnotes:The current vendor purchased this 3½-Litre Derby Bentley in October 1968, his name being recorded in the '3rd Change' section of the accompanying old-style buff logbook. Issued in 1959, the logbook also records a change of engine from the original 'T5BH' to 'N4BO' in August 1961. Interestingly, 'B115BL' was originally scheduled for bodying as a saloon by Vanden Plas, as indicated on the copy build sheets on file. The original customer was Bradley Mathew & Son, who ordered the Bentley for the use of one W Price Esq. The vendor has researched the car's ownership history extensively, and a list of all its registered owners is on file. The Bentley was fully restored by Fiennes some 20 years ago, the whole process extending from June 1991 to October 1993, while the trimming (by Parrish Trimmers) was completed in 1994. The restoration file is around an inch thick and includes the workshop log, all invoices, and miscellaneous correspondence. The car also comes with a 3½-Litre Instruction Book (from 'B150CR'); a modern reproduction of the Service Instructions for Bentley Cars Vol. I (dated 1967); a second, 'leaning back Flying B' radiator cap; and an almost complete set of tools to include a starting handle (probably original); a jack (again probably original: it includes the long part of the handle to turn the jack mechanism, but does not have the actual T-Bar to turn it); and numerous smaller tools of Bentley or Rolls-Royce manufacture (plus a few replicas).Vendor Score Total: 89/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. 1948 Delahaye Type 135M Three-Position Drophead CoupéCoachwork by PennockRegistration no. DGZ 1135Chassis no. 800843Odometer reading: 26,679MOT: 22/04/2022*Rare three-position drophead coupé*Matching chassis and engine*Fully restored circa 15 years ago*Serviced and MoT'd in April 2021 To view a feature video of this lot please click hereFootnotes:Following WW2, the concours-winning firm of Pennock created this outstanding - and very rare - three-position drophead coupé on the Delahaye 135M chassis. Right-hand drive, like most quality French cars of the period, this matching-numbers 135M benefits from a body-off, 'last nut and bolt' restoration undertaken by its former owner - a wealthy German industrialist - some 15 years ago at a cost of £200,000. It is understood that the car had had only one previous owner. The Delahaye then formed part of the German owner's private collection for 10 years before arriving in the UK in 2017 when it was sold to an Englishman, who UK-registered the car and used it sparingly on 'high days and holidays'. Last year the car was fully serviced and fitted with a set of new tyres, while in April 2021 it was serviced again and MoT tested, the underside being videoed as its immaculate condition was admired. Said to drive beautifully, this magnificent French thoroughbred is finished in two-tone dark red/plum with fine coachlines separating the two colours, while the interior is upholstered in beige hide with dark red carpets. The fully lined hood is trimmed in beige West of England cloth. Photographs of the restoration, including the engine rebuild, are on file together with the MoT certificate; original handbook; and the UK V5C document recording only one owner in this country.Vendor Score Total: 80/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. 1934 Hotchkiss 413 Cabourg SaloonRegistration no. HVS 546Chassis no. 39785Odometer reading: 67,473MOT: Exempt*Sold new in France*Right-hand drive*Considerable recent expensitureTo view a video of this lot please click hereFootnotes:A slump in demand for the products of its Saint-Denis munitions factory prompted Hotchkiss to diversify into motor manufacture in the early 1900s. The company was already a major supplier of components to the automobile industry, and right from the start the famous 'Hotchkiss Drive' (by live axle and open propeller shaft) was a feature of its cars. Its designation denoting four cylinders and 13CV, the 2.3-litre Hotchkiss 413 was introduced in 1933. This example was purchased new in 1934 by a Mr Fontane, who lived in a smart district of Paris (his nameplate is on the dashboard). Post-war the Hotchkiss was housed in a French museum before coming to the UK in 1991. The engine was then rebuilt and the car took its owner's family to Monte Carlo twice. Subsequently the Hotchkiss was owned by Branislav Sujick, who did very little with it. Described as a 'restoration project', the car was purchased at a UK auction in October 2011 by VSCC member Clive Hamilton-Gould, who rebuilt the engine including a re-bore and high-compression pistons. The current vendor purchased the Hotchkiss in 2018, since when the carburettor has been rebuilt; a new clutch fitted; the front suspension rebuilt with new bearings, kingpins, and bushes: new Hartford shock absorbers fitted to the front axle; and five new tyres fitted (in June 2021). 1953 Jaguar XK120 SE RoadsterRegistration no. 211 UYHChassis no. S674330Engine no. F1133-8Odometer reading: 61,266MOT: Exempt*Delivered new to Los Angeles, California*Left-hand drive*Single owner from 1959 to 2014*Restored in the UKFootnotes:According to its accompanying Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, his left-hand drive Jaguar XK120 SE was built in November 1953 and shipped to Jaguar's United States West Coast distributor Charles Hornburg in Los Angeles. The car's original colour scheme was British Racing Green with tan interior and gunmetal sort-top. The original owner's name is not recorded but it is understood that he was a racing driver who repainted the XK red and kept the car until 1959, by which time it had covered some 17,000 miles. The car was then sold to Mr Joe Rogers of Walnut Creek, California, who would cherish his beloved XK for the next 55 years, keeping it out of wet weather and preserving its originality.Sold because of Mr Rogers' advancing years, the Jaguar was brought back to the UK in 2015, sold at auction and subsequently fully restored by its new owner, including a re-spray in the original British Racing Green livery. Additionally, the engine was rebuilt; the electrics rewired; the suspension overhauled; new wire wheels fitted; a stainless exhaust installed; and a Guy Broad five-speed gearbox fitted. (The original four-speed Moss gearbox is included in the sale.) Dating back to 2015, the history file contains a State of California Certificate of Title; a V5C registration document; invoices and photographs of the restoration; and the aforementioned Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate.Vendor Score Total: 73/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. Pair of Arts and Crafts embroidered panels titled 'Spring' and 'Summer' probably from a set of the Four Seasons, made for Ada Phoebe Godman (nee Bell, 1850-1900), dated 1898 and named to 'Ada' beneath the figures, almost certainly manufactured by Morris and Co., and passed down the family, 153cm x 76cm, in ebonised framesFootnote: Ada Godman was a daughter of Sir Lowthian Bell, Bart and both he and Ada had houses commissioned from Philip Webb with furnishings supplied by Morris & Co. Sir Lowthian’s Rounton Grange had an embroidery frieze designed chiefly by Burne-Jones in the dining room. Ada’s dining room at Smeaton Manor had embroidered panels illustrating the wild birds and animals that frequented the garden. It was designed in 1885 by Thomas M. Rooke (1842-1942), Burne-Jones’s studio assistant, and worked by Ada. The most likely designer would therefore be Rooke, who was also a friend of the Godmans.Condition report: Both with discolouration from dirt. Numerous small holes from moth allover.
