A Very Early Lacquered Bronze Buddha, possibly 10th-12th Century. This is an extremely fragile object which is commensurate with its potential age (10th-12th Century). There are traces of gilding to the body and a red band around the base. The hair particularly on the back (see pictures) clearly show the use of ground lapis lazuli which has been painted into the hair. The inside of the back of the buddha is clearly visible as the back has been open and exposed, probably to remove some valuable writing/object that had been stored inside. The damage is not visible from the front. There are traces of a material that has been applied to the interior body of the Buddha - another indication of distinct age. This Buddha is seated in the Bhumisparsha Mudra with the right hand extended towards (touching) the ground and with a very serene face. This is a sign symbolising The Buddha's enlightenment under the bodhi tree, when he summoned the earth goddess, Sthavara, to bear witness to his attainment of enlightenment. The right hand, placed upon the right knee in earth-pressing mudra, and complemented by the left hand - which is held flat in the lapin the dhyana mudra of meditation, symbolises the union of the method and wisdom, smasara and nirvana, and also the realisations of the conventional and ultimate truths. It is in this posture that Shakyamuni overcame the instructions of mara while meditating on Truth.Provenance: This Buddha was gifted to a family who were based in Peking (now Beijing) up until 1914. On their departure to return to the United Kingdom (via the Trans-Siberian route) one of their servants, who had been long serving and loyal to this family presented them with this Buddha which may have been a family heirloom. ÉMILE GALLÉ (Nancy, France, 1846 - 1904).Art Nouveau soliflore vase, ca. 1900.Cameo glass.Signed on one side.Measurements: 20 x 12 x 12 cm.Nature was one of the main sources of inspiration for Gallé, whose style was characterised by the naturalistic way in which he depicted the elements, as if observed through a macro, at a large size, or in the form of landscapes. This vase, with its singular design, is made of cameo glass, which consists of making a piece with two or more layers of glass of different colours so that, after dipping it in acid, the decorative motif is in relief on a plain background of a different colour.Émile Gallé began his career working for his father, who owned a glass and ceramics factory, producing designs with floral and heraldic motifs. Very interested in botany, he studied it in depth during his youth, alternating with drawing classes. Between 1862 and 1864, at his father's request, he travelled around Italy, England and Germany, taking an interest in the applied arts but also in subjects that he would later reflect in his works, such as music, philosophy and nature. On his return he settled in Meisenthal, where his family's glass furnaces were located, in order to fully learn the craft of glassmaking. He also travelled to London and Paris to see the collections of their museums. In 1874 he took over his father's factory and soon achieved great international success, winning prizes at International Exhibitions and selling works to important collections and museums. Today, works by Emile Gallé can be seen in the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Orsay Museum in Paris, the Brohan Museum in Berlin and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, among many others.

adidas, UEFA Champions League Final 2022 Kick-off Ball, Liverpool FC v Real Madrid CF, played at Stade de France, Saint-Denis on 28th May 2022, pure white hexagonal panels symbolising truce and unity with silver stars bearing black borders, bearing adidas and UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE logos framing МИР Peace emblem and printed with match details The design of the ball is deliberately paired back with a message for peace with the Cyrillic word "МИР", which can be translated as peace sitting above the word PEACE. The ball represents a message of "peace, belonging and hope" that will be passed from player to player during the match. The ball was used for the kick-off. The first time it went out of play, it was then collected up by the ball boy and given to the venue match director (who signed the certificate). Each of the ball boys and girls had a replacement ball (standard practice as 12 balls are in circulation during a match) and was briefed on what would be happening so the change could be made for another ball. It was then taken back to their office and transferred to adidas on site. Graham Budd Auctions joins adidas and UEFA to facilitate the historic auction of the Champions League Final 2022 Kick-off ball, coined the Peace ball, with all proceeds going to UNHCR, the United Nations refugee agency which supports those who have been forced to flee their homes. This unique, single lot auction coincides with World Refugee Day, 20th June 2022.

The gabled pediment centred by a key block carved with a lamb carrying a flag above a pair of paneled doors enclosing two shelves and three short drawers, paneled sides, three long serpentine drawers below, on bun feet259cm high, 163cm wide, 67cm deepLITERATURE Baraitser M. and Obholzer A., Cape Antique Furniture, Struik, 2004, illustrated as plate 1171, p276 Accompanied by a copy of the history of the armoire as detailed by Mr GH Tanser, stamped in 1976 by Cultural History, SA Museums (now Iziko Museums) PROVENANCE It is likely that the Menne armoire was originally made for a member of the de Villiers family, as the lamb carrying a flag on the keyblock is part of the family crest. Near the beginning of the 19th century the armoire came into the possession of the Menne family by unknown means. When Johanna Hellet and Theodore Menne married in 1844 the bride's mother gave her the armoire as a wedding gift. It travelled with the couple from the Cape to KwaZulu Natal and remained in their possession until Theodore Menne?s death in 1905. The armoire was passed down to his son and grandson who did not live for long, and so in 1913 the armoire was bought out of the estate by Theodore's youngest son, Frank. He decided that the armoire should pass to the female line in the family, and so it came into the possession of his eldest daughter Gertrude. It has been passed down in the family and has been on loan to Iziko Museums since 1966 and exhibited at the Slave Lodge in Adderley Street.

signed and dated 21.9.1966gouache on card30 by 19cm With Clarke's arrival back in South Africa in 1962 from Europe, the artist was faced with the harsh realities of the stringent, punitive laws that affected every aspect of people of colour's lives at the time. The late 50s and throughout the 60s saw the implementation of forced removals, with the Nationalist government enforcement of the Group Areas Act directly impacting Clarke's beloved Simon's Town and the life he had created there. Many of the works created by the artist during this period were portrayals of the turbulent political climate and the exclusions of apartheid South Africa. While many of these works carried a political message, this wasn't the only framework within which his works could be interpreted, as the artist points out "I was not just involved with the politically inspired pictures because there were other concerns too: the drama of life itself. There are all kinds of social demands made on people, whoever they might be". The subjects of Clarke's works often possess a sense of group identity, with individual figures lacking identifiable features. The artist portrays people through a humanist lens of dignity and subtle humour, where tough times are offset by moments of happiness. Clarke would often escape the scenes of hardship that surrounded him by infusing his works with nostalgia of his childhood. For the artist, bathers represented his youth and a longing for days of freedom, rid of the anxieties of life for a 'coloured' artist during this time. In Bathers (lot 480), Clarke?s colourist and graphic approach is emphasised through lush colour choices and simplified planes. The work is centred around a scheme of simple, bold shapes, showing four bathers arranged against a vibrant orange beach scene. Clarke works with a brilliant palette, modelling his forms with tones of the same colour and flattening the surrounding environment by using slight variations of a disquieting orange, making it difficult for the viewer to distinguish a horizon. In this way, continuous, flat areas of colour blend space, with distance only defined by the scale of the figures. The surrounding environment is also seemingly washed with the warmth of the afternoon sun, with the sea and the sand reflecting the colours of the sky as the sun begins to set. Clarke's resolute use of thick layers of gouache permeates this work with the intensity and emotional evocation that his works are known for. Clarke's contributions to the South African art scene extended beyond painting and illustration, as he was an equally respected writer and poet who inspired and mentored many artists during his life. His gentle critique and generosity extended to many young artists, as well as well-established artists and friends. Bathers (lot 480) was gifted to Kees de Jong, a Dutch poet, who travelled to South Africa in an old Landrover. The current owner of the work recalls de Jong and Clarke's shared adventurous spirit, and their becoming fast friends after meeting, often spending hazy afternoons writing together and exchanging ideas. This is one of many stories about Clarke's willingness to engage with fellow creators, and this small, impactful work contributes to Clarke's role as a senior statesman of the South African art community and his lasting impact on those that surrounded him.-AC Hobbs, Philippa and Rankin, Elizabeth (2011), Listening to Distant Thunder: The Art of Peter Clarke, Johannesburg: Fernwood Press, pp. 99-117

WILLIAM DANIELL RA (BRITISH 1769 - 1837), UNAPOOL IN KYLESKU, ASSYNT engraving and aquatint on paper, titled image size 21cm x 28cm, overall size 43cm x 50cm Mounted, framed and under glass. Note: William Daniell's "A Voyage Round Great Britain" was the most ambitious of the many topographical publications produced in England during the early nineteenth century and its plates are a highpoint in the history of aquatint engraving. The work comprised a lengthy descriptive text and 308 aquatints, engraved by Daniell himself and hand-coloured through the agency of William Timms. The first half of the whole work, i.e. volumes I–IV, was issued both in parts (two prints to a part) and in volumes between 1814 and 1820. Volumes V–VIII appeared in volume form only between 1821 and 1825. Daniell made the original pencil drawings on a series of tours between 1813 and 1823, the first two in company with Richard Ayton, who wrote the text for volumes I–II. The remaining six volumes have text by the artist himself. Daniell's route took him clockwise round the coast, commencing and finishing at Lands End. For the first four volumes the firm of Longman shared the risk of publication with him. The retail price of parts was originally 10s. 6d. and of volumes 7 guineas. The original copper plates are held by Tate Gallery (London).

A 1924 Bayliss Thomas 10/22 Reg No. SV7705Chassis No. 5263Engine No. 5240.Founded in Coventry in 1874, Bayliss Thomas & Co took its name from those of its two founders, and made bicycles and motorcycles under the 'Excelsior' brand name. Reconstituted in 1920 as the Excelsior Motor Co Ltd, by which time it had relocated to Tyseley Green, Birmingham, the firm introduced its first motor car in 1922, choosing to market it as a 'Bayliss-Thomas' to avoid any confusion with the Belgian Excelsior car. A wide variety of models were listed, all of good quality using conventional construction and making use of proprietary components. This car was an early example of the use of a Meadows 4EB engine and 3-speed gearbox. It is understood that Bayliss Thomas exported several cars of this period to Australia as rolling chassis to have coachwork fitted locally. The 4-seat tourer body is of a sturdy construction having the front seat back act as a brace across the body. The early Meadows 4EB engines are OHV units with in this instance a 1247cc capacity.Brought back to the UK in 1999 the car has had several enthusiast owners, the history file shows that the engine was fully rebuilt in 2010 with new pistons, bearings, head and block machining and much more totalling in excess of £2000.The car is finished in Cream with Black wings and nicely upholstered interior, a black hood and side screens are present. Was driven in.Engine was rebuilt approx. 10 years ago and has done approx. 6000 miles since.Semi-regularly driven by the current owner, who bought it from a friend 6 years ago.Bodywork sound but has blemished spots (poorly overpainted).Door hinges require some attention but are fully working. With side screens. All nickel plate is tarnished with age.Generally sound but with some wear consistent to age and use.

The P1800 became world-famous for the series of "The Saint" in the 1960s, with Roger Moore as Simon Templar in the leading role. After building 6000 cars in 1963, production of the P1800 was relocated to Sweden, and the car was then named the 1800 "S" (Sverige). In September 1969, the P1800E came onto the market with a Bosch fuel injection system, a modified dashboard and had disc brakes all around. A Leica M2 Rangefinder Body, 1961, black paint, serial no. 1031864, body, F-G, shutter working, heavy brassingNote: Fully serviced by Malcolm Taylor in May 2022Note: Leica Camera AG states that serial 1031864 was delivered on 22.02.1962. The recipient or place of delivery is not noted. No entry in the old repair-/maintenance books for this serial.Provenance: The camera was purchased directly from E. Leitz (Instruments) Ltd, 30 Mortimer Street, London W1 by Associated Iliffe Press Ltd (much later IPC Business Press Ltd) for the use of Ron Easton, a senior photographer in a pool of some 8 photographers. They served the many Iliffe magazines which included Flight, Farmer and Stockbreeder, Autocar, Motor Transport, Motor Trader, Cage and Aviary Birds among others. Ron Easton worked for these magazines but specialised in motoring subjects. When the pool was disbanded in 1970, Ron Easton and another photographer transferred to Autocar magazine and worked out of the Autocar office under the supervision of the current vendor. The camera was used for motor racing photography (Formula One and rallies) all over Europe, and also for the magazine's weekly road test car photography. On one occasion when photographing the Swedish Rally in the 1970s with temperatures around minus 20C, Rons Hasselblad 500CM refused to function but the Leica M2 just kept on working! During the 1960s and 1970s the Leica was serviced regularly by E. Leitz (Instruments) Ltd and during one of these services in the mid-1970s the camera's brass strap lugs, which had worn dangerously thin, were replaced by Leitz with the present chrome ones as the original black painted lugs were no longer available. When Ron Easton retired from Autocar in 1981 the Leica was acquired by the current vendor, who had known the camera since the mid-1960s and had been loaned it from the late 1970s after it had been replaced by an M4P. The current vendor has also used the camera extensively since then.

AN ENGLISH DELFT DATED POLYCHROME DRUG-JAR of typical shape, painted in blue, green and iron-red, named THER:ANDR: within an extended scroll cartouche with central shell,  flanked by winged putti, supported by a winged mask between swags of flowers above the initials and date I:P.1723 The jar was made to contain 'Theriaca Andromachi', a theriac (or polypharmaceutical preparation) made according to the formula of Andromachus, a Roman physician of the first century AD See an example named for different contents, with the same initials and date as the present example from the collection of Dr. A. Murray, sold Sotheby's, London, 21 July 1970, lot 188. This appears to be virtually identical in shape and decoration and would suggest that two sets of this type exist.
