Alfred Wheeler (British, 1851-1932), The Racehorse St. Amant with Kempton Cannon up, Winner of the Epsom Derby 1904, signed J.A. Wheeler and dated 1904, with further inscriptions on verso, oil on board, 23 x 28cm, 9 x 11in. * At Epsom in 1904 St. Amant was ridden as at Newmarket by Kempton Cannon, in an unusually small field of eight runners. The French-trained colt Gouvernant started 7/4 favourite in front of a crowd which included the King and the Prince of Wales. The race was run in a violent thunderstorm, which appeared to adversely affect some of the runners including Gouvernant and Henry The First but St. Amant broke quickly, opened up a clear lead, and was never headed. He won "in a canter" by three lengths from John O'Gaunt, with St Denis six lengths further back in third, being greeted by "deafening cheers" from the crowd. The enthusiastic reception was largely due to the popularity of St. Amant's owner, Leopold de Rothschild, who was well known for his charitable work. As part of the celebrations Rothschild distributed coal, groceries and money to the widows of Newmarket and gave half a crown to every schoolchild in the neighbourhood. Condition Report: The painting is in good, original condition.  There are one or two minor creases to the board in the left hand bottom corner of the painting, with one crease having some very minor chips of paintloss.  The painting is framed but not glazed.  The frame has the odd knock and loss commensurate with age.

The Mayor and local police were summoned and Tony feared the worst, but instead of being hostile they offered him a meal, a room and the services of a young lady for the night.. Tony was too tired and shaken to explore the full possibilities of that offer. After the war he became an RAF test pilot and flying instructor and many future pilots had cause to remember his 'hands on' style and infectious enthusiasm. Between 1941 and 1971 Tony flew more than 20 types of aircraft including Hurricane, Spitfire, Mosquito, Tiger Moth, Chipmunk and even the mighty Lancaster Bomber.Soon after his marriage to Myrtle Cornish in 1952, Tony was posted to Calgary, Alberta. Canada certainly made an impression on him and on his return two years later he was fond of entertaining family and friends with stories of sub-zero temperatures and his Canadian exploits..

Charles Sims, RA, RWS (British, 1873-1928) Breton Maiden signed lower right "Charles Sims 1890" watercolour, in a gilded wooden frame 52 x 35cm (20 x 14in) Provenance: A gift from the artist to a friend in Islington and by descent Charles Sims was born in Islington, London. In 1890 he began to study painting and he enrolled at the South Kensington College of Art, before moving to Paris for two years at the Académie Julian from 1891-1892, under Benjamin Constant and Jules Lefebre. He then studied at the Royal Academy Schools from 1892 to 1895, where he was awarded the Landseer Scholarship. Sims painted portraits, landscapes, and decorative paintings. He was one of that group of artists who continued to paint symbolic and romantic themes after World War I. His Continental training accounts for his fluent handling of paint, and his confident treatment of space and atmosphere. These qualities rapidly gained him critical and academic success. He held a highly successful one man show at the Leicester Gallery in 1906, and 'The Fountain' was bought for the Chantrey Bequest in 1908. Academic honours followed. He was elected Associate of the Royal Academy in 1908, Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1911, Member of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1914 and a Royal Academician in 1915. He became Keeper of the Royal Academy Schools in 1920. The First World War proved to be a traumatic experience for Sims, from which he never recovered. His eldest son was killed and he was unbalanced by what he witnessed in France, where he was sent as a war artist in 1918. His subsequent paintings often show signs of the mental disturbance which led him to resign his post at the Royal Academy Schools in 1926. In 1928, Sims committed suicide. A study of his life by one of his sons appeared in 1934 (Charles Sims, ed. Alan Sims, Picture Making: Technique & Inspiration, London 1934) and a selection of his work appeared in the Last Romantics exhibition (Barbican Art Gallery, London 1989). Some foxing overall.

Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna of Russia, and family - letters and photographs sent to her former nurse, Millicent CroftsA large number of letters dating from around 1913 until around 1939, mainly handwritten, with several family photographs, including a silver gelatin print of Prince Alexander of Yugoslavia as a baby, a photograph dated 1879 to the reverse showing Grand Dukes Cyril Vladimirovich and Boris Vladimirovich with their mother, a nurse in traditional Russian dress and several children in a tent on the beach and 2 family group photographs (quantity)Note: Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich of Russia was an uncle of Tsar Nicholas II . This archive comprises letters sent from his children and grandchildren to their former nurse, an Englishwoman, Miss Millicent Crofts. Many of the letters are sent from Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna and Elena's three daughters (Marina, Elizabeth and Olga, Princesses of Greece and Denmark). Whilst the letters from the three daughters tend to be lighter in tone, letters from Elena herself speak heavily of anxieties regarding the present state of Europe, worries about her family and have a sense of nostalgia for the past. One letter sent from Athens dated December 1916 reads: "I must profit of a scarce occasion to write to you as, now, on account of the blockade, we can't send letters by post anymore…it does not feel like Christmas somehow there is no peace and goodwill on earth. I am so sorry not to be able to send you a little present this year but unfortunately I have got no money myself as I can't get it from Russia and we have got to be very economical…Our poor Greece is being so shamefully and injustly treated…they [the children] were very frightened the day the French bombarded Athens…" Another letter dated November 1917 reads: "…The news from Russia is indeed dreadful and you can imagine how anxious I feel for all my dear ones there…" It continues to report on the whereabouts of Russian family members, and Elena comments: "The past seems to be quite swept away, nothing of what we knew and loved exists anymore…"However, the family also experiences joy, as Elena's daughter, Princess Olga of Greece and Denmark writes on a postcard dated 1921: "Here is a view of our house…Our lovely counsin Philip is to be christened on Sunday; he is very sweet and you would love him." - the baby in question is the current Duke of Edinburgh. The archive shows the great resilience of a family who had been through very turbulent times: Grand Duchess Elena married Prince Nicholas of Greece and Denmark in 1902. Although she was not living in Russia at the time of the 1917 Revolution, she naturally was anxious about her family there. Further troubles hit the family as the Greek monarchy lost the support of the now Communist Russia and the ensuing political crisis forced Greek royals into exile. Whilst her daughters made very successful marriages (Princess Marina married the Duke of Kent and became aunt to Queen Elizabeth II), Elena's letters show her moving between France and Greece, where she died in 1957.The collection also includes letters sent from Elena's brothers: Grand Duke Cyril Vladimirovich, Grand Duke Boris Vladimirovich and Grand Duke Andrei Vladimirovich of Russia. Although there are fewer of these letters, the sense of nostalgia remains. In 1935, Andrei writes from Paris: "Now, in these days when all that was dear to us has passed, the golden days of childhood are a refuge to remember…A very hard time we have now, very hard…" Whilst a 1914 letter from Boris speakes of anxieties regarding the First World War: "We have all courage and hope that soon this awful war will come to a happy end for us all."

Billy and Charley (or the Shadwell Forgeries),c.1860, a Billy and Charley brass medallion cast with decoration of medieval appearance,11 x 7.5cmBilly and Charley came from the area of Shadwell, London and began making forgeries in the middle of the 19th century. They started out as mudlarks, scouring the banks of the Thames for anything of value which they could then sell on. This brought them into the contact of William Edwards, a London antiques dealer, who paid them for anything of interest they found. It soon became clear to Billy and Charley that there was money to be made in antiques, and in 1857, they began their counterfeit operation. It is believed that in the four or five years that they were in production, Billy and Charley produced between 5,000 and 10,000 forgeries. The sheer volume of items aroused suspicions and they were brought to the attention of the British Museum who believed them to be forgeries. However, many archaeologists and local historians believed them to be real, giving them dates ranging from 1300 to 1600. Even a court case could not prove that the objects were forged or that the two men were behind it.

Red Rum 1973 Grand National Aintree Horse Racing Programme. Good condition with a couple of annotations. The race is best remembered for being the first of Red Rum s three Grand National wins, doing so in record time, and for his remarkable defeat of Crisp on the run in, having trailed by 15 lengths at the final fence. Before the off, Red Rum was 9/1 joint-favourite with Crisp to win the race. However, by the time the runners had reached The Chair the Australian chaser Crisp, who was carrying the top weight of 12 stone, had already built up a significant lead and appeared unstoppable. For much of the initial stages, Crisp s closest challenger was Bill Shoemark on Grey Sombrero, but he fell at The Chair, giving Crisp an even greater lead which had grown to 20 lengths by the end of the first circuit. Crisp s jockey Richard Pitman later recalled that at Becher s Brook on the second circuit, fallen jockey David Nicholson shouted at him: Richard, you re 33 lengths clear, kick on and you'll win! At the same time, he heard the Tannoy commentator Michael O Hehir declare: And Red Rum is coming out of the pack, Brian Fletcher is kicking him hard! At the 30th and final fence, Crisp was still 15 lengths ahead of Red Rum, ridden by Fletcher and given 10 stone 5 lb by the handicapper. However, Crisp was beginning to tire badly on the 494-yard run-in, carrying 23 lb more than his nearest rival. Red Rum made up considerable ground, and two strides from the finishing post he pipped Crisp by a mere three-quarters of a length, in a then-record time of nine minutes, 1.9 seconds a record which would stand until it was beaten in the 1990 Grand National. The third horse, L Escargot, who would win the National two years later, was 25 lengths adrift at the finish. There was one equine fatality during the race when Grey Sombrero fell at The Chair whilst leading the pursuit of Crisp. He suffered a broken leg and was euthanised, becoming the first fatal casualty of the Grand National since Vulcano in 1967. Grey Sombrero is one of three horses to have been fatally injured while jumping The Chair in the Grand National the others were Land Lark in 1975 and Kintai in 1979.1973 is often considered among the greatest Grand Nationals of all time, and the dramatic final-stretch battle between the two greats. Red Rum 1977 Grand National Aintree Horse Racing Programme. Good condition with some biro annotations. 129th renewal of the world famous Grand National horse race that took place at Aintree near Liverpool, England, on 5 April 1975. The race was won by 13/2 second-favourite L Escargot, ridden by Tommy Carberry, in a time of nine minutes and 31.1 seconds and by a distance of 15 lengths over 7/2 favourite Red Rum, who was thus denied a third consecutive win. Crisp and Red Rum has also been described as one of the greatest sporting moments. Before the race, Red Rum was generally thought too old - at the age of 12 - to win the Grand National for a third time, having come home first in 1973 and 1974, and second in 1975 and 1976. However, being ridden by jockey Tommy Stack for the second consecutive National, the gelding clinched his unprecedented third title, bringing his career earnings to a then steeplechasing record of £114, 000. A large portion of the 42-strong field was eliminated from the race on the first circuit: 19 had fallen or unseated their riders before the second circuit, including seven at the first fence. Going onto the second round, Boom Docker held a significant lead the biggest going onto the second circuit in Grand National history but he refused to jump the 17th fence. It was not until Becher s Brook the 22nd that Red Rum went into first position, when the leader and pre-race favourite, Andy Pandy, fell. Red Rum s lead grew gradually, and he came home 25 lengths ahead of second-placed Churchtown Boy and the mare Eyecatcher in third. Eleven of the 42 runners completed the course. Churchtown Boy had won the Topham Trophy over the national fences just two days earlier when ridden by Chris Read, who finished third in this race on Eyecatcher. The 1977 National was also notable for being the first in which a female jockey participated. Twenty-one-year-old Charlotte Brew nearly completed the race, though she was a long way behind the leaders. Her horse, Barony Fort, refused at the 27th fence. Hidden Value had fallen at the 26th and was remounted to finish 10th whilst Saucey Belle had fallen at the 22nd and was remounted to finish last. Good condition.
