A George III mahogany and tulipwood commode in the manner of Henry Hill of Marlborough, of serpentine form with half-serpentine sides, fitted with a brushing slide and three graduated, oak-lined drawers, the brass rococo handles and escutcheons original, 88cm h; 52.5 x 118cm The design for the escutcheons appears in a brassfounder's pattern book, c1770-80, the example of which in the Victoria and Albert Museum is stamped 'Maulin' and 'C Omnia labori cedunt'. Similar handles appear in another of c1780-85. Both are illustrated in the article by Sir Nicholas Goodison, The Victoria and Albert Museum's Collection of Metal-Work Pattern Books, Furniture History Society Journal Vol XI, 1975, pp13-14, 27-28 and figs 8, 9 and 29
A French empire period 'Directoire' marble-topped mahogany commode, fitted three short over two long drawers with brass inlay, supported on turned and brass mounted legs. 135.5 cm wide x 64 cm deep x 87 cm highCondition report: Both sides cracked in the panels, see imagesA carcass top panel is missing from the stile and panel constructed carcass, under the marble slabSome odd woodworm flight holes to the back panelsDrawer runners have been changed, so have the drawer stops (blocks on back frame)The drawers show some signs of repairs to the bottoms especially the bottom drawer, its back looks a little clumsy in comparison with the othersA length of brass quadrant moulding is missing from the frame below the bottom drawer see an image of the bottom rail for clarificationSigns of old gimp pin repairs to some other brass moulding but very fewThe reverse of the drawer fronts show some extraneous holes, however, these handles look in keeping and seem period apart from the horrible hex nutsThe drawers have a key but this does not workThe marble slab appears to be goodTo sum up, the item is basically right but has had a series of running repairs over the course of its life and will require a few more to put into showroom conditionI have tried to be comprehensive in my list but it is possible some minor blemish has escaped me
A French Louis XVI style inlaid walnut commode, with veined marble top above three long drawers on cabriole legs, height 86cm, width 103cm, depth 47cm.Additional InformationA few minor scuffs and marks to the wood here and there throughout, light patina of scratches here and there to the marble top, otherwise fair.
