An Italian walnut neo-classical commode - late 18th century, in the manner of Maggiolini, with marquetry inlaid border decoration to the top and swags and urns to the frieze drawer, together with a roundel centred over two further long drawers, repeated marquetry swag decoration to the uprights and on tapering square legs 87 x 123 x 57cm (34 x 48 x 22in) Giuseppe Maggiolini, 1738-1814, was a pre-eminent cabinet maker and skilled marquetry artist in Milan. His studio produced commodes and chests inlaid with European and exotic woods using the wood's natural colours or by tinting green, blue and rose. The cartoons of classical figures were produced by artists Guiseppe Levati and Andre Appiani. The work fell out of fashion with the rise of the Empire style but a commission to commemorate Napoleon's coronation saw renewed commissions in 1806. Maggiolini retired in 1809 but his workshop continued under the direction of his son. Some small sections of veneer missing to the apron and expected wear and marks.
