A Louis XV tulipwood, amaranth, marquetry and gilt metal mounted serpentine commode, circa 1770, in the manner of François Rübestück, the rouge and yellow marble veneered top above two drawers, on square section tapering legs and sabots, 89cm high, 147cm wide, 70cm deep (marble veneered top possibly associated). See lot 329 for a Louis XVI secretaire a abbatant from the same vendor, stamped F. RüBESTüCK JME. For a closely related Louis XVI ormolu-mounted amaranth, sycamore and marquetry serpentine commode stamped François Rübestück see Important European Furniture, 23 June 1999, Christie’s London, King Street. Bearing very similar floral marquetry within a scrolled mount framing, with conforming panels to the sides, on slight cabriole legs headed by foliate mounts and terminating in downswept foliate sabots. François Rübestück, matre 1766, emigrated from Westphalia, established himself in the rue de la Roquette before transferring to the rue de Charenton. He is most noted for his lacquer furniture but also made a group of elegant floral marquetry commodes, nearly all with the marquetry panel framed by ormolu bands. One such marquetry commode, albeit slightly smaller, with nearly identical mounts was sold anonymously, Ader Picard Tajan, Paris, 2 March 1972, lot 84, while another from the collection of the 6th Earl of Rosebery, Mentmore, Buckinghamshire, was sold Sotheby’s house sale, 18-20 May 1977, lot 510. Condition Report:** Marks, scratches and abrasions consistent with age and use. Top later associated, chips to outermost edges. Some old closed splits, chips and replacements to veneers. Heads of the screws appear to be hand struck, where we have removed the mounts, they appear to have been on here for some time. No evidence that they have been reiftted or altered. Where the locks have been removed, they have been filled with blocks of timber. The carcass, drawer linings and back boards are all oak, the drawer linings and back boards are particularly clean so it is possible that these are 19th century replacements, however because overall the commode is of highly cleaned, polished restored appearance it is difficult to conclude for certain. Viewing in person is strongly recommended. Please see the available additional images to form your own opinion.
