A FINE GEORGE III MAHOGANY AND INLAID SERPENTINE FRONTED COMMODE IN THE MANNER OF WILLIAM VILE, CIRCA 176584.5cm high, 115cm wide, 53cm deepProvenance:Barnwell Manor, NorthamptonshireA serpentine commode by William Vile incorporating a similarly gadrooned edge to the top is currently in the Sitting Room at Harewood House, Yorkshire (this piece was formerly at St. James's Palace). Another commode incorporating this design feature and attributed to Vile is held in the collection of the Metropolitain Museum of Art, New York (64.101.1142).For a pair of serpentine commodes of the period, incorporating some related features, see Christie's, London, Apter-Fredericks: 75 Years of Important English Furniture, 19th January 2021, Lot 10 (£162,500). Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and useOld chips and splits. some small losses. Some old repairs and restorations as expected for age and use. The dust boards in between the drawers are all showing wear and rub marks, this is caused by the rubbing action of the drawers being opened and closed against these boards. The underside of the drawers show wear also. The drawers have later runners to the undersides in order to assist practical use. The rear panel is original. Good colour and patina overall. Please refer to additional images. The brass handles are of the period. There is no clear physical evidence of the handles being replacements. There are no alternate holes to the drawer fronts for handle fittings. There are some different types of fixing nuts securing the handles them of various date as is often found. The locks appear original apart from one replacement. Lacking key(s). The locks are secured with screws of various date. The escutcheons are likely replacements as the hole to take the key is not large enough, several are misaligned with the pin of the lock. There are two very small fragments of carving detached but present. (additional images illustrate this) . There is an interesting paper inventory number label pasted into each of the two top drawers. They record the same number as each other and indicate that the commode was likely in a significant private collection previously. Unfortunately at this stage there is not enough evidence to indicate which collection this might have been. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition.
