A WALNUT, ROSEWOOD AND INLAID COMMODE, 19TH CENTURY the rectangular top above a later secrétaire drawer enclosing two drawers and a leather writing surface, with two long graduating drawers inlaid with female busts enclosed by swags of ribbons below, on tapering legs, restorations 85cm high, 19cm wide, 56,5cm deep PROVENANCE Sold: Strauss & Co, Cape Town, 11 October 2010, lot 57
An 18th century mahogany commode chest of drawers, probably Dutch, with serpentine front, four frieze drawers with brass drop handles, shaped backplates and lock escutcheons and with cockbeading to each drawer front, flanked by fluted rounded columns and raised on shaped bracket feet. Width 120 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The handles and lock escutcheons are later replacements. The backplates of each handle cover the original handle holes. This looks to be the second set of handles that the piece has had. The lock escutcheons are clearly a similar age to the handles. The top of the piece is in reasonable condition. There is a stress fracture between the two planks that make up the top. There is a small repair to the rear right hand return moulding at the back. The rear of the top has been reattached at left and right and there are old filled holes to the right and left hand side as you will be able to see. The sides of the piece are in generally good order with only minor stress fractures to the timber. The bracket feet are original and in good condition. There is a break to the front right hand foot at the base. We have the detached piece. The backboards are original. There are some very minor traces of old long gone woodworm to the softwood carcass but these are minimal, long gone and in our opinion insignificant. The piece is structurally sound. The veneers are generally in good order.
A late Georgian mahogany step commode, three tread, with turned legs. Width 47 cm, height 71 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Structurally very good condition. There are two small sections of cross banded veneer missing to the lid. One is visible at the front the other is on the left hand return. Step one has a 2 cm section of crossbanded edge veneer missing. Tread one has a similar smaller section front right and corner. The legs are all original. They are a little scuffed. The back board of the piece is in good condition.
An early 19th century child's rocking chair, with commode seat. Width 37 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The seat top is not hinged but has been. The hinges are missing. There are losses to the areas where the hinges have been on the seat side. The seat top has been broken in half. There are four holes in the seat which appear to be later. The main body of the chair seems to be original. The pine corner blocks to the underside of the rear of the seat are probably later replacements. There are screws to the underside rear and side edges of the back of the seat which are probably later. The chair has numerous scuffs, scratches, small timber losses and marks particularly to the sides and the top edges of the sides. Our images should show these.

- In mahogany and gilt bronze, with white marble top, three drawers on the front, the frieze decorated with gilt bronze Vitruvian scrolls, an oval reserve with a gilt bronze strapwork and floral cartouche, drawer handles in the form of lion masks holding twisted laurel wreaths, edges with ”en aspèrge” decoration and gilt bronze lined square tapering legs. Stamped G. Beneman under the top. The marble top stamped on verso ‘Meubles Anciens, Hopilliart, Paris, 12 rue de St. Pères’. Paper label ‘Pietro Accorsi antichità n. 447’ inside the top drawer. 36.61 x 53.94 x 23.82 in. Provenienza / Provenance Pietro Accorsi, Torino. Bibliografia / Literature Kjellberg, Le mobilier français du XVIII siècle, Les éditions de l’amateur, 2002. € 15000
