A Swedish serpentine walnut, tulipwood, ebonised and parquetry decorated commode, by Mathias Engstrom, Swedish, 18th century, with three drawers, ebonised outswept corners, elaborate metal mounts, 85cm high, 125cm wide, 56cm deep. Mastercabinet maker from 24th November 1758 through to 1797. He was taught by Erik Bergstrom from 16 October 1741 through to 10 October 1745. He worked in Johan Hindrich Remmer`s workshop, with Johan Behrens and Lard Norberg, known craftsmen. Engstrom`s chests-of-drawers are of bombe outline, with sides inlaid with large lozenges of amaranth and he often used bold veneer with dark stripes. Other parts of the chests-of-drawers consist of various types of veneer, in jacaranda, amaranth, walnut, elm, maple together with fruitwoods`.
