A George III padouk and kingwood commode attributed to John Cobb,c.1765, of serpentine outline with ormolu mounts, the matched-veneered top with a crossbanded moulded edge above three long cockbeaded drawers mounted with laurel wreath and reeded bail handles, with conforming escutcheons and carry handles to the sides above a wavy edge apron, on splayed forelegs terminating in foliate-cast sabots,125cm wide65cm deep 88cm highProvenance: Maurice 'Dick' Turpin, Barons Keep, London W14.Literature: A commode of this model, supplied by Cobb to James West of Alscot Park, Warwickshire, is illustrated in L Wood, 'Catalogue of Commodes', 1994, p.51, fig.35. Also seen here in the present example, Wood describes the 'serpentine-sided cockbeaded drawer-fronts, echoing the curve of the front angles, the shaped apron is incorporated in the bottom drawer instead of being part of the carcase; and where the cockbead moulding follows the apron profile, it is set in an inch from the bottom edge'.
