A George III mahogany and crossbanded serpentine fronted chest of drawers, circa 1770, in the manner of Thomas Chippendale, with a baize lined brushing slide, above four graduated drawers flanked by scrolling ourswept corners with carved acanthus, trailing bellflower and fluting, on bracket feet, 83cm high, 121cm wide, 61cm deep. Bearing retailer’s ivorine plaque for ‘M. Harris & Sons, 44/52 New Oxford Street, London, WC1. This dressing chest of drawers relates to a design for a ‘French Commode Table’ in Thomas Chippendale’s The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker’s Director, 1754, pl. XLVIII. A further device characteristic of his work is the use of paneled pilasters invariably headed by scrolled brackets above pendent strings of finely carved and detailed husks or bell flowers. Related pilasters are found on documented examples of mahogany case furniture dating from the 1760s, such as the pair of Library Bookcases supplied to Sir Lawrence Dundas for 19 Arlington Street in 1764, and the Library Table and Commode Clothes-Press, both commissioned for Nostell Priory in 1766. The design of handle used for this commode was much used by Chippendale at Nostell Priory, including on a green and gilt japanned clothes-press (C.Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, London 1978, vol. II, p146, fig. 263). A Continental walnut serpentine commode, possibly Maltese, late 18th century, with figured walnut panels within crossbanded and line inlaid borders, the fall opening to an arrangement of drawers and pigeon holes, above three long drawers on short cabriole legs, 110cm high, 137cm wide, 64cm deep. For a closely related Maltese bureau see Christie’s South Kensington, European Furniture, Works of Art, Tapestries and Carpets, 11 February 2004. ‘This bureau has close similarities illustrated in Antique Maltese Furniture by Jospeh Galea-Naudi and Denise Micallef, fig. 89 p.84 and Guide to Maltese Furniture 1700-1900 by the same authors, fig 34.p61.’ condition report:** Marks, scratches and abrasions consistent with age and use. Old minor closed splits, chips, some lifting and losses to veneers. Handles and escutcheons replaced with marks around current escutheons. Filled open vertical splits to the sides. A Fine & Rare 18th Century Burr Yew Wood Commode of good colour & patination. The burr veneered top with cockbeaded border above a recessed concave front. The single plain drawer of tapered form flanked by two slanted slides covered in green baize and a concave tambour slide. The single drawer ornamented with two dummy drawers and fitted with urn-form escutcheons. The interior fitted with a circular stand to house a chamber pot. Raised on square feet with a bracket-form apron. 30 ins (76 cms) in height, 23½ ins (60 cms) in width, 18¼ ins (67 cms) in depth.
A Fine 18th Century German Figured Walnut & Marquetry Serpentine Commode of small proportions. The top inlaid with chinoiserie figures and scrolling strap-work in a broad outer border edged in brass moulding. The three serpentine front drawers having cross-banded borders with Rococo scrolling ormolu escutcheons and foliated handles, standing on shaped bracket feet, 31½ ins (80 cms) high, 28 ins (71 cms) wide, 20 ins (51 cms) deep.
A Fine & Attractive Sheraton Revival Painted Satinwood Bow-Front Commode. The top richly decorated with a band of pansies, clematis, lilac, primula, roses, irises & butterflies. The frieze painted with anthemion motifs centred by a profile portrait roundel and divided by gilt paterae above tapered giltwood columns. The central cupboard door having an oval panel painted with a scene of three young women drawing a chariot with Cupid. Bordered by a laurel wreath and flanked by side panels with ovals depicting painted glasses of flowers. Raised on short legs carved with imbricated leaves. 36½ ins (93 cms) high 54 ins (137 cms) wide, 22 ins (56 cms).
