COMMODE Travail grenoblois, première moitié du XVIIIe siècle MATÉRIAUX Bâti de sapin, placage de citronnier, loupe d’orme, sycomore teinté, fi lets d’ébène, palissandre et bronzes dorés H. 83,5 cm, L. 132,5 cm, P. 65,5 cm Cette très belle commode de forme rectangulaire légèrement galbée en façade témoigne de l’immense qualité des ébénistes de la région de Grenoble et de leur parfaite maîtrise de la marqueterie en recourant à des essences de bois indigènes aux teintes fraîches et chatoyantes. Elle ouvre à quatre tiroirs sur trois rangs à traverses de soutien apparentes qui reçoivent un très élégant décor marqueté géométrisant se vrillant au centre pour former un ovale. De très élégantes poignées de tirage en bronze ciselé et redoré composées de bustes de personnages chinois épousent la forme de ces motifs. Le centre de la façade est rythmé par trois entrées de serrures en bronze doré prenant la forme d’un large cartouche feuillagé à coquille se détachant d’un encadrement vertical. Trois baguettes de bronzes dorés soulignent chacun de ces tiroirs. En partie basse, un cul-delampe ou tablier en accolade s’agrémente d’une coquille feuillagée. Les panneaux latéraux sont marquetés sobrement d’un grand losange encadré de bois sombre. La marqueterie du plateau démontre toute la virtuosité de l’ébéniste qui a su faire jouer avec harmonie la fluidité des formes et la polychromie des bois. Le centre est orné d’une étoile à multiples branches traitées à la manière d’une rose des vents et cernée par un double cartouche sinueux rappelant une arabesque et ponctué de pastilles. Le pourtour du plateau est bordé de filets de bois foncé marqué aux angles par un cœur stylisé terminé par une petite fleurette. Chacune de ces formes est réalisée avec des essences de couleurs différentes que l’artiste a su faire ondoyer pour créer un effet décoratif surprenant. Les montants antérieurs arrondis sont soulignés d’une triple cannelure incrustée de bronzes dorés. L’amortissement est orné de feuilles lancéolées terminées par des enroulements. Les pieds postérieurs sont droits. Cette commode traduit le grand art de l’ébénisterie qui s’est développé dans la région de Grenoble notamment sous l’impulsion de la géniale dynastie des Hache qui débuta avec Noël (1630 - 1675) et qui se poursuivit jusqu’à la fi n du XVIIIe siècle. Ces derniers ont su avec subtilité faire fusionner les techniques de la marqueterie hollandaise et allemande en l’adaptant aux décors français et en utilisant des bois indigènes. L’artiste qui réalisa ce meuble a sans aucun doute été influencé par le travail des Hache au regard de la qualité et de la richesse du décor mêlant savamment formes géométriques et sinueuses. Tout comme l’Œuvre de ces derniers, cette commode démontre la vitalité de la production régionale en France qui rivalise de qualité et d’élégance avec les grands meubles de l’ébénisterie parisienne. Sur le plateau de cette commode, les angles sont ponctués d’un curieux motif que la critique interprète comme un cœur stylisé prenant la forme d’un écoinçon. Cette ornementation se retrouve sur de nombreux meubles et miroirs parisiens ou provinciaux dont la pointe est toujours tournée vers l’extérieur. Il ne faut pas y voir la signature de quelque ébéniste mais plutôt le rapprocher de la croix huguenote sur laquelle on retrouve ce cœur qui symbolisait pour les croyants l’Amour de Dieu. Ainsi, ces ouvrages pourraient être vus comme une création protestante, le cœur marquant l’union, sa pointe le combat et le fait qu’il soit dissimulé au milieu d’autres motifs, la clandestinité. Ce type de décor s’observe dès le début du XVIIIe siècle dans les productions allemandes ou hollandaises, régions de l’Europe très favorables à la Réforme.
