A late 19th Century French walnut marble top commode The rectangular top with rounded front corners above a single frieze drawer and three long drawers above a shaped apron and turned ball feet, 131 x 90 x 58cm.Marble glued and repaired (full length break). Split on left hand side, almost full length, and on right hand side. Some minor chips on veneer of draw top lips.
A late 19th Century French marble top mahogany commode Having a shaped white marble slab top above an arrangement of three short and two long drawers, each applied with gilt metal beading and ring handles flanked by fluted columns and raised upon tapering legs, 110 x 78 x 46cm. Marble good, only minor stains. Chest good condition, only minor rubbing and wear.
A French Louis XV style kingwood, marquetry, marble and gilt metal mounted inverted breakfront commode, early 20th century, the variegated red, grey and white marble top over three short and two long drawers, with inlaid quarter veneered panels and central lattice parquetry panel, with beaded ring handles and ribboned oval escutcheons, the bowed canted corners over angular cabriole legs, 41 x 18½in. (104 x 47cm.), 34½in. (87.5cm.) high.

A George III mahogany serpentine commode, circa 1770, attributable to Henry Hill of Marlborough, the crossbanded and moulded top above three long graduated drawers, the top drawer opening to a sliding baize inset surface, flanked overall by projecting angles, above a shaped apron and outswept bracket feet, 160cm wide, 83cm high, 160cm wide, 56cm deep Provenance: Private Collection, Gloucestershire Purchased from Mallett This 'commode' chest-of-drawers, with top and frame serpentined in the French manner relates to a chest-of-drawers, also incorporating a dressing-table slide, that the Marlborough cabinet-maker Henry Hill (d. 1778) is likely to have included in his furnishings totalling £1,300 supplied to Corsham Court, Wiltshire between 1760 and 1778 (L. Wood, 'Furniture for Lord Delaval: Metropolitan and Provincial', Furniture History, 1990, p. 206, fig. 24). Among related commodes is one from the Samuel Messer Collection, sold Christie's London, 5 December 1991, lot 118; and another with slide-fitted drawer acquired in 1937 by the Victoria and Albert Museum (M. Tomlin, Catalogue of Adam Period Furniture, London, 1982, p. 180; inv. no. W.55-1937). A George III satinwood, tulipwood and marquetry serpentine commode, circa 1770, in the manner of John Cobb, the shaped top decorated with tied ribbon and floral marquetry, above a pair of doors each decorated with a flowing urn, one side panel deorated with a lute and sheet music, the other with a basket and scythe, on outswept bracket feet, 80cm high, 91cm wide, 47cm deep Provenance: Private Collection, Eaton Square, London since 1960 and thence by descent.For a related marquetry commode attributed to John Cobb, see Christie’s London, Important English Furniture, 27th November 2003, Lot 90. Its 'vase' ornament harmonised with the 'Etruscan' style that was introduced by architects such as Robert Adam (d. 1792) to the fashionable bedroom apartment of the period.
A Newhall porcelain teapot and cover, circa 1790, of commode form, puce mark to underside, height 15cm, together with similar sugar basin, milk jug and four matching tea bowls with saucers. (11) CONDITION REPORT: Chip to rim of teapot (thumbnail sized), security chain present on lid, spout un-damaged, puce mark N208, milk jug slight time-staining otherwise good, sugar with general discolouration but in good order, one teabowl with hairline crack, saucers in fair condition.
