A Continental sycamore, marquetry and gilt metal mounted commode, circa 1765, of serpentine shape, the top with marquetry scene of Chinese pavilions and trees incorporating mother of pearl, within a ribbon and flower garland, the front fitted with three drawers decorated sans traverse with flower head diaper pattern panels and a central pilaster inlaid with flutes and gilt metal stops above a scrolled frieze, flanked by matching canted corner pilasters and conforming diaper side panels, on mounted tapered feet, 73cm high, 87cm wide, 48cm deep. Condition: Overall good condition. Structurally sound. General scratches, marks, rubbing and wear commensurate with age and use. Scattered minor nicks to edges. Wear to legs, including a small loss to veneer just above mount- less than .25``. Some shrinkage cracks to underside. Some very slight lifting to veneer. A tiny ding to metal molding on front of top. Mounts to front legs loose- each missing one nail. Lacking mounts to rear legs; legs with corresponding nail holes. The velvet lining a later replacement. Lock plate a later replacement. Retains key.
