A French kingwood, rosewood and tulipwood serpentine commode, inlaid stringing, the moulded edge top above above two short and four long graduated drawers fitted gilt brass foliate handles, flanked by shell and leaf carved angles, on scroll feet, late 19th century, 41.5in (105.7cm) h, 47in (119.4cm) w, 22in (56.2cm) d.
COMMODE en bois de placage marquete´ en feuille dans des encadrements de filets. Elle ouvre a` trois tiroirs sur tris rangs se´pare´s par des traverses. Les montants pince´s se prolongent par de petits pieds cambre´s. Fine ornementation de bronzes cisele´s et dore´ tels qu’entre´es de serrure, poigne´es de tirage, chutes d’angles ajoure´es, tablier et sabots. Dessus de marbre rose veine´ gris. E´poque Louis XV H 84, L 80, P 42 (accidents, manques et restaurations)
COMMODE A` LEGER RESSAUT CENTRAL en bois de placage marquete´ en feuille dans des encadrements de filets en bois clair a` motifs ge´ome´triques tels que marqueterie de cubes sans fond et frises de grecques. Elle ouvre a` cinq tiroirs sur trois rangs, les deux rangs infe´rieurs sans traverse. Les montants ante´rieurs arrondis a` cannelures simule´es et les montants poste´rieurs en le´ger ressaut. Elle repose sur des pieds cambre´s termine´s par des sabots de bronze dore´ figurant des pattes de lions. Fine ornementation de bronzes cisele´s et dore´s telle que : entre´es de serrure, anneaux de tirage et chutes. Dessus de marbre gris Sainte Anne Estampille´eF.AMONDON,Franc¸oisAntoineMondon ( 1732-1809) rec¸u mai^tre en 1757, et marque JME E´poque Transition Louis XV-Louis XVI H 88, L 127, P 62 cm (petits accidents, manques et restaurations)

Les montants, arrondis a` cannelures, prolonge´s par des pieds fusele´s. Fine ornementation de bronzes cisele´s et dore´s tels qu’entre´es de serrure, poigne´es de tirage, frises de perles, frises de piastres, bagues et sabots. Dessus de marbre blanc. COMMODE TOMBEAU en placage de bois de violette marquete´ en feuilles de forme chantourne´e sur la face et les co^te´s. Elle ouvre a` quatre tiroirs sur trois rangs se´pare´s par des traverses. Elle repose sur de petits pieds cambre´s. Les montants fortement pince´s sont orne´s de bronze dore´ et ajoure´ a` motifs de feuilles d’acanthe. Belle ornementation de bronzes dore´s et cisele´s tels que poigne´es de tirage, chutes d’angle et entre´es de serrure. Dessus de marbre bre`che. Estampille´e I DUBOIS, Jacques Dubois (1693-1763), rec¸u mai^tre en 1742 E´poque Re´gence H 83, L 129, P 83 cm Demi-fre`re de Noe¨l Ge´rard avec qui il travailla, Jacques Dubois ne prit la mai^trise qu`assez tard. Sa production, toujours e´le´gante, le rattache a` la Re´gence et au style Louis XV dont il fut l`un des grands promoteurs.
A George III serpentine bombe yew wood parquetry commode, circa 1765, the top crossbanded in tulipwood within a border of rosewood, the moulded edge veneered with yew, the front fitted with a brushing slide over three long drawers with mahogany drawer linings, with gilt brass handles, escutcheons and feet, 60cm high x 122cm wide x 86cm deep. Note: Probably from the workshop of Pierre Langlois and with mounts attributed to Dominique Jean. Pierre Langlois is believed to have settled in London before the outbreak of the seven years war in 1756 and from 1759 he was working from premises at 39 Tottenham Court Road until his death in 1781. His work became very popular in the 1760`s and 1770`s and he was favoured by many eminent patrons such as The Duke of Bedford, The Earl of Coventry, Horace Walpole, The Marquis of Zetland and Sir Lawrence Dundas amongst others. His style was markedly French in manner though unlike the French preference for marble tops he would use wood and his use of ormolu was something rarely seen on English furniture at the time. It is likely the ormolu mounts on this commode would have been made by his son in law Dominique Jean who worked with him and the handles are very similar to those on a commode formerly owned by Apter-Fredericks who refer to similarities between a pair of commodes supplied to the Earl of Shaftesbury in 1762 for the Vyne, Hampshire. The feet with their triple scroll , beading and foliate casting can be compared with a number of commodes, most recently lot 20 at Christies New York on 7th June 2012.
