William Edmund Warrand was commissioned into the Royal Engineers on 8th June 1849 as a 2nd Lieutenant, retiring with the rank of Major General on 22nd August 1883 after 34 years service. He saw active service during the Indian Mutiny with the Bengal Sappers who were to play a key part in the storming of Delhi on the 14th September 1857. Shortly after sunrise that morning the Sappers advanced from Ludlow Castle in the face of heavy enemy fire, crossed a bridge that had been almost totally destroyed, lodged bags of gunpowder against the right leaf of the Kashmiri Gate into the city and blew it open giving access for the main assault column lead by Nicholson. It was at Delhi that Warrand lost his arm. By the end of the Mutiny he had risen to the rank of 2nd Captain. It is believed that he used this gun in India as well as at home in Nottinghamshire.
