HARDY THOMAS: (1840-1928) English Novelist. A.L.S., Thomas Hardy, two pages, 8vo, Max Gate, Dorchester, 29th July n.y. (1892), to the publisher John Lane. Hardy informs his correspondent that it would be convenient to see Mr. Strang almost and day the following week and suggests that he catch a train from Waterloo on Wednesday `which reaches Dorchester at 6.13`. Hardy adds `There will be nobody else staying here, & Mr. Strang can arrange his own times & do as he chooses`. Written on mourning stationary and with blank integral leaf. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Hardy. Some very slight, minor foxing, otherwise VG. Hardy`s father had died nine days earlier, on 20th July 1892. The artist William Strang (1859-1921) drew Hardy as Max Gate shortly after this letter was written. Lane published Strang`s work in The Art of Thomas Hardy by Lionel Johnson (1894) and the novelist himself remarked to Lane that, whatever "its fidelity or otherwise as a portrait" it seemed to him "an excellent specimen of Mr. Strang`s work".
