CATHERINE II THE GREAT: (1762-1796) Empress of Russia 1762-96, Catherine the Great. An excellent and very attractive D.S., `Ekaterina´, in Cyrillic, a bold and good signature example, one large page, oblong 15 x 21 folio, Saint Petersburg, 8th August 1769, in Cyrillic. The document bears to the front a splendid and very large paper seal with coat of Imperial arms and is signed by the `Empress and Sovereign of All Russias..´, being a title given, appointing a representative to the Pope Clemens XIV, who will carry out his duties from the Russian consulate established in the port city of Ancona on the Adriatic Sea. Countersigned at the base by Prince Alexander Golitsyn. It is likely that this appointment was postponed or canceled, the name of the diplomat having never been completed. It was probably part of a political strategy of Catherine II who, after the occupation of Poland, had waited only a spark to launch a war of expansion against Turkey, under the false pretext of providing help to Christians against the unbelievers. It will be done in September 1768, and the port of Ancona, natural gate to Turkey, will serve as a base for the Russian fleet already installed in the Mediterranean Sea. In 1771, Russia will seize Crimea and the Turks will finally sign peace in 1774. Accompanied by an official contemporary translation into Latin, attached to main document signed by Catherine II. Very small overall minor age wear. VG Prince Alexander Golitsyn (1718-1783) Russian Marshal and Diplomat. Governor of Saint Petersburg. One of the main Russian military leaders involved in the war against Turks.

I go down to Easton tomorrow & I shall be back in London after Thursday next.' Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Wells and bearing the remnants of a black wax seal to the verso. [JAPAN]: DE BUNSEN MAURICE (1852-1932) British diplomat who served as Secretary of Legation in Tokyo 1891-94, Consul-General in Siam 1894-97 and later as British Ambassador to Spain 1906-13 and Austria 1913-14. An informative A.L.S., M de Bunsen, eight pages, 8vo, Tokyo, 5th July 1891, to Sir Clare Ford. De Bunsen apologises for not having written before and continues 'I had a successful voyage out to this remote part of the world, stopping a few days at several interesting places such as Bombay & Hong Kong. Barring the exile, I am charmed with Japan. & especially with our Legation premises…..I have been comfortably established in my one storied bungalow, in a secluded part of the compound. It is a roomy & airy house, as cool as any in Tokio. The verandah, which is my favourite lounge, overlooks the moat & inner fortifications behind which lives the Tenno, King of heaven, as the Japanese call the Mikado. The climate is perfect, according to my experience…..we are in the midst of the rainy season - sheets of warm water pouring down all day & all night, & everything steaming with damp…..I am writing on a P & O ship on my return journey from Kobe where I have been investigating a consular row…..I shall be alone at Tokio for some time to come, with Gubbins (the Japanese Secy) & 2 little student interpreters….I ride about a good deal in the country which is full of quaint little lanes running in & out of the rice fields, along which you see the prettiest Japanese gardens & cottages, & an occasional temple here & there in a dense grove of giant cryptomerias…..The Tokio Europeans are mostly English professors and instructors of different kinds in the Japanese service - some of them very pleasant people to meet…..We don't see much of the chers collegues. The Spanish Minr. is a good fellow, but his staff of two secretaries is completely “ramolli”. There is a constant flow of tourists, increasing every year, & just now Yokohama is full of naval officers…..Madrid does indeed seem far off…..I should like much to hear what you are all doing. Meanwhile I suppose I am fixed here for a good three years - & very lucky I was to get the post….' To the lower half of the final page appears an A.N.S., F. C. Ford, by Clare Ford, dated 29th August 1891, in part, 'This is a letter from my excellent friend & former secretary at the British Embassy at Madrid. Maurice de Bunsen I consider is one of the most rising of our young men in the Diplomatic service'. Together with a second A.L.S., M. de Bunsen, four pages, 8vo, Tokyo, 23rd November 1891, to Mary Ford, wife of Sir Clare Ford, stating that he had recently heard from her husband that she might like to try growing some Japanese seeds at Pencarrow, 'I venture to send you a few by post, which I have received from an English lady here who has made a study of Japanese plants. She tells me they are all seeds of Japanese varieties, as far as she knows, of the wild kinds. It would give me pleasure to send you some seeds of the more artificial & cultivated varieties of flowers, if practicable…..The chrysanthemums are now flourishing & since my arrival in Japan last spring I have seen a fine succession of cherry blossoms, peonies, azaleas, wistarias, iris & lotus'. Further including a third A.L.S., M. de Bunsen, four pages, 8vo, Hanover Gate, Regents Park, London, 31st January 1899, also to Mary Ford, on black bordered mourning stationery. De Bunsen writes following the death of Sir Clare Ford, in part, 'I feel I must intrude with a line to express my sincere sympathy. Sir Clare has been a kind chief and true friend to me, and it is painful to think of his having passed away. I wish I could be in Paris to attend his funeral, but I cannot now leave England…..I hope that his ill health and enforced seclusion since he left his last post will not have obliterated from the public memory the great services he rendered to the country throughout the more active part of his career'. Each of the letters have slight, minor traces of former mounting, otherwise VG, 3Sir Francis Clare Ford (1828-1899) English Diplomat who served as Minister Plenipotentiary to Argentina 1878-79 and later as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Brazil 1879-81 and Ambassador to Spain 1887-92.
