Moon, 20 Threadneedle Street, London, 1844; ‘Tomb of St. James, Valley of Jehosaphat’, published by F.G. Moon, 20 Threadneedle Street, London, 1843 (17) set of the fourteen plates each 33cm x 49cm [plate margins only] Provenance: The Estate of the late Lynette F. H. Cole, Rutherford House, Town Yetholm, Scottish Borders Note: Roberts was the first professional artist to visit the Near East without a patron or a connection to a military expedition or missionary group. He sailed to Alexandria in 1838 and for eleven months travelled up the Nile River, across deserts and mountains, through Egypt and the Holy Land, to arrive in Jerusalem on Easter 1839. He continued north to Lebanon and departed from Beirut in May. Roberts recorded his impressions of landscapes, temples, ruins, and people in three sketchbooks and more than 272 watercolours. These sketches and paintings provided the basis for the 247 lithographs published with text between 1842 and 1849 as the three-volume "Holy Land." The images were produced by Louis Haghe, the best and most prolific lithographer of the time. Originally from Tournai, Belgium, Haghe moved to England before 1825 and established himself as specialist of the hand-tinted lithograph. His sensitive handling of the lithographer's tools imparts a range of tonality and colour as well as a sense of the delicacy and spontaneous quality of Roberts's original images. Roberts's plates are among the most popular images of famous sites in the Near East. As John Ruskin wrote they make "true portraiture of scenes of historical and religious interest. They are faithful and laborious beyond any outlines from nature I have ever seen."

He is also entitled to the 1915 Star, British War Medal, and the Victory Medal. Approximately 12.1cm across Condition: generally good. Lot 108

An interesting and scarce Falklands War Vulcan Bomber souvenir mounted engine part, with letter of provenance. Salvaged from the decommissioned Vulcan XM 607, which took part in a long range bombing run at Port Stanley runway on May 1st 1982. Manufactured in aluminium, mounted on an oak base, with an applied gilt metal and enamel RAF Waddington badge to one side. Complete with original Royal Air Force Waddington letter, dated February 14th 1983, and signed by Flt Lt I P Woodhouse OC ASF, certifying that the piece is a component taken from the Rolls Royce Bristol Olympus engine MK 30101, serial number 650414, which powered the Vulcan XM 607 aircraft that put Port Stanley runway out of action during the Falklands campaign. Notes: XM607 was completed on December 30th 1963, and was delivered to 35 Squadron the following year. The aircraft took part in Operation Black Buck (as part of 44 Squadron), flying in the first, second, and 7th raids on the occupying Argentinian forces at Port Stanley. XM607 had due to be the reserve or back up aircraft for the first raid, but a technical fault with the first choice XM598 (failure in cabin pressure), meant that XM607 carried out the first raid, commanded by Flt Lt Martin Withers. The 9 hour non stop flight involved two mid air refuels from Victor Tanker planes. The aircraft was retired in December 1982, and by January 1983 it was displayed as a gate guardian at RAF Waddington. It’s known that the aircraft has been used sporadically as a parts donor for more airworthy Vulcan over the years, and it’s likely that this part was an early piece of salvage. Approximately 13.5cm height, base size 10.5cm x 7cm. Condition: generally good. A little surface wear and patination to the aluminium in places for use. The base is in good condition, some small areas of enamel loss to the applied badge.

HIGHLAND PARK 1989 MISSION GOLD SERIES 18 YEARS OLD | Distilled: 1989 | Bottled: 2007 | Stated age: 18 years old | ABV: 52,6% | Region: Islands - Orkney | Country: Scotland | Type: Single malt Scotch whisky | Distillery description | Highland Park Distillery is an iconic Scottish distillery located in Kirkwall, on the Orkney Islands. Its origins date back to 1798, although the story of its founding is steeped in myth. The distillery is attributed to either Magnus Eunson, a well-known smuggler and priest, or David Robertson, a local farmer. While the exact details are debated, the distillery's official gate proudly displays 1798 as its founding year. Highland Park experienced significant growth and stability in the second half of the 19th century. Under the ownership of William Stuart, the proprietor of Miltonduff, and later James Grant, a former manager of the Glenlivet distillery, the distillery expanded and established itself as a key player in the Scotch whisky industry. In 1937, Highland Park joined Highland Distillers, which is now part of the Edrington Group, alongside brands like The Macallan. The distillery first launched its whisky as a single malt in the 1970s with an 8-year-old version. In the 1980s, it underwent a packaging redesign, introducing 12-year and 18-year expressions. Highland Park quickly gained a dedicated following, almost cult-like in nature, and its range of products continues to grow. Beyond its core line of aged whiskies, the distillery regularly releases limited editions inspired by Orkney's rich history and Norse mythology. | Bottle description | Highland Park 1989 is a single malt whisky bottled by independent bottler Murray McDavid as part of the prestigious Mission Gold series. This series is known for bottling whiskies at cask strength, without chill filtration or added coloring, ensuring a natural character. Taste: Rich and expressive, featuring honey, fine peat, and notes of white fruit, vanilla, and light spice. Finish: Long and balanced, with lingering notes of fruit, sweetness, and fine smoke. The auctioned bottle is number 701 of 1,152 produced.Size: 700 ml | Duty stamp: CZ | Packaging: metal tube

The gate of the Red Fort, Agra Company School, North India, early 19th Centurypencil and watercolour with bodycolour on paper laid down on card, inscribed lower centre in Persian and English 433 x 758 mm.Footnotes:ProvenanceChristie's, Travel, Science and Natural History, 25th April 2012, lot 210.The Persian inscription reads: hatiya pol darvazeh qala'ah agra, 'The Hatiya Pol [Hathi Pol] Gate of the Fort of Agra'.The English: Fort of Agra. The fort originally belonged to the Lodhi dynasty before it was captured by Babur, the first Mughal Emperor (reg. 1526-30). His successor and son Humayun was crowned there in 1530. It was not until Akbar's reign (1556-1605) that Agra became the capital of the Empire, at which time the fort was rebuilt in red sandstone, completed in 1573. During the reign of Shah Jahan, many of the fort's marble palaces were built when the Emperor remodelled the three main courtyards, finally finishing this process in 1637. It was there in the Shah Burj that Shah Jahan was to spend the last eight years of his life held captive by his son Aurangzeb. The city of Agra was captured from the Marathas by the British in 1803, who greatly admired the Mughal buildings of Agra, Sikandra and Fatehpur Sikri. The Union Flag (or an approximation of it) flying above the gate in our painting presumably reflects this occupation. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
