HARDY THOMAS: (1840-1928) English Novelist. L.S., T. Hardy, one page, 8vo, Max Gate, Dorchester, 29th November 1900, to a gentleman. Hardy responds to a request from Alfred B. Liddle of Columbus, Ohio, for permission to set music to I Look into My Glass and remarks `Please inform him that such permission is given`. Small, minor split to the edge of one fold, and another fold reinforced with archival tape to the verso, not affecting the text or signature. About VG
BARRIE J. M.: (1860-1937) Scottish Novelist, created Peter Pan. A.L.S., J M Barrie, two pages, 8vo, Leinster Corner, Lancaster Gate, 9th October 1906, to Mrs. Poyser (?). Barrie informs his correspondent that he has seen the `most enjoyable little girl` although continues `I think we have no vacancies in "Peter Pan" this year as I like to keep the same people as far as possible but she will be remembered.` The novelist also asks that any business matters be addressed to him. With blank integral leaf. Letters by Barrie in which he refers to his most famous creation, Peter Pan, are rare and desirable. VG Peter Pan debuted as a stage play on 27th December 1904 at the Duke of York`s theatre in London with Nina Boucicault creating the role of Peter.
MELBOURNE VISCOUNT: (1779-1848) British Prime Minister 1834, 1835-41. A.L.S., Melbourne, one page, 4to, Brocket Hall, 21st October 1836, to Palmerston. Melbourne writes, in full, `If we cannot interfere openly, it will never do to engage in a conspiracy in favour of the Queen of Portugal`. With blank integral leaf. A letter of interesting content between two Prime Ministers. A brief printed biography and small circular magazine portrait are neatly laid down at the base of the letter alongside the small circular ownership stamp from the Rawlins Collection. Together with Clementine S. Churchill (1885-1977) Wife of Sir Winston S. Churchill. T.L.S., Clementine S. Churchill, one page, 4to, Hyde Park Gate, London, 7th January 1964, to Miss. Harber. Churchill encloses a prize (no longer present) for a tombola being organised for the Annual Dance in aid of the British Empire Cancer Campaign for Research and also comments `My Husband and I are delighted that Colonel Barlow Wheeler`s work should have public recognition, and I am sure that-like you-many of his friends in Woodford join us in this.` G to VG, 2 Viscount Palmerston (1784-1865) British Prime Minister 1855-58, 1859-65. Palmerston, who married Melbourne`s sister, died at Brocket Hall in Hertfordshire.
