AFTER GIOVANNI ANTONIO CANAL, CALLED CANALETTO ROWING SCENE ON THE THAMES Oil on canvas 40.5 x 64cm (15¾ x 25 in.) Provenance: Property from the Phillip Lucas Collection, Spitalfields House This south-facing view of the Thames depicts the old York Water Gate and the York House water pump spire in the foreground, with Westminster Bridge, the old Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey in the distance. A similar view can be seen in the 1746-1755 painting by Canaletto, now at Penrhyn Castle, Gwynedd (NT 1420346). Condition Report: The canvas has been lined and cleaned. Rubbing and abrasions to the framing edges. Surface cracking throughout, particularly to the sky. Some of this cracking has been in-filled and this over paint can be seen in natural light. Inspection under UV reveals scattered retouching throughout, including to the aforementioned areas, as well as traces of an old varnish.Condition Report Disclaimer
