Bulletin, Dated May 5th 1917 - A Letter to Private Palmer`s Mother from his Company Commander Lieutenant Hart`It is with feelings of intense regret that I have to inform you of the death of your son, Private W.R.R. Palmer. The Boche raided us on Easter Monday evening, but before the raid he bombarded us very heavily, and his snipers too, were very active. Your son was killed about 5.15 p.m. on Easter Monday by a Boche shell. He was hit by shrapnel in the head, and died immediately. I sincerely hope you will receive this news as lightly as you possibly can, under the circumstances. His death, I assure you, is keenly felt by me, his platoon officer, and all the men in the company. My sincere hope is that this terrible war will soon end, and that the fruits of it all will show that all our gallant lads and comrades have not died and suffered in vain. My heart goes out to you in your sorrow, and may God in His goodness console you in your bereavement. I have arranged for him to be buried on Tuesday, the day after his death. It was a hard thing to see such a good lad cast away from further service, but he did his duty for King and Country bravely, and a small cross marks his resting place`. Private PalmerÕs Last Hand-Written Letter Home to his Mother, dated Good Friday, 6th of April 1917 `Tonight we are going `up the line` to renew our acquaintance with Fritz. Im sure he is going to get it in the neck at no distant date. You watch the papers`.
