Local Interest - Deeds, Indentures and other documents relating to 25 Sadler Gate, Derby, 13 paper, 18 on vellum, some solicitors' seals (31), enveloped in a Bemrose & Ling, Solicitors of Derby, manilla folderNo. 25 Sadler gate is the only un-refronted early 17th century building in this Derby street, and faces down the present Strand Arcade. The deeds tell the story of the ownership and occupancy of 25 Sadler gate from 1763 when it was owned (with two adjoining premises) by Samuel Brown, whose executor (and nephew) was the well-known King Street spar turner Richard Brown (1736-1816). A later owner was Dr. Francis Fox of The Wardiwck (from 1805), one of Joseph Wright's sitters. It passed to his sons, Alderman Douglas Fox (1798-1885) who was married to Marianne daughter of Jerediah Strutt, junior, and his brother Dr. Archibald Fox of Blackheath, London, who married the daughter of Derby's MP Michael Thomas Bass. They sold it in 1859 and in 1863 it was acquired by cutler and iron monger Joseph Eagers, with whom the premises are most frequently associated and whose family owned it well into the 20th century. The last deed is dated 1929.

Churchill concludes by asking 'Would you please convey to all those concerned my warm thanks and good wishes?'. Laid down to a folio page removed from a scrapbook and with a Danish newspaper clipping affixed to the lower right corner of the letter. Some light wrinkling and staining caused by the mounting. Together with a second T.L.S., Winston S. Churchill, (small stain slightly affecting two letters of the signature), one page, 4to, Chartwell, Westerham, Kent, 29th June 1955, to Vagn Christensen. Indeed I hope to revisit Denmark before too long', further adding 'Now that I have resigned from public office I find there are so many things which need my attention at Chartwell that I really do not feel I can get away this summer, when the weather in Denmark is at its best'. Churchill concludes 'I remember well the clever precautions you took for the safety and comfort of our flight to Denmark in 1950'. Neatly laid down to the folio page, slightly obscuring the upper left corner of Clementine Churchill's letter, and with the copy of the route also laid down alongside, the printed 8vo sheet featuring a map of the roads close to Chartwell Manor and Westerham to the recto and various printed directions for driving from London to the verso. In May 1945, he worked as a liaison officer between the British forces and the Danish government. Following the war Christensen served as Managing Director of Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) from 1948-78. The present letters are of interest for several reasons - Churchill's letter of December 1953 is written just over a week after the Nobel Banquet at the City Hall in Stockholm on 10th December and relates to his wife's flight to Sweden in order to accept the Nobel Prize for Literature on behalf of her husband. The Banquet speech, delivered by Clementine Churchill for her husband, opened 'The Nobel Prize in Literature is an honour for me alike unique and unexpected and I grieve that my duties have not allowed me to receive it myself here in Stockholm from the hands of His Majesty your beloved and justly respected Sovereign. I am grateful that I am allowed to confide this task to my wife….' Winston Churchill visited Copenhagen in Denmark in 1950 and received an Honorary Degree (PhD) from the University of Copenhagen. During the visit, he also made a tour of the Carlsberg brewery and in Churchill's honour they unveiled their Special Brew (originally named V-beer) following the Danish tradition of producing a new beer to celebrate outstanding events such as a Royal occasion or European Coronation. Churchill's favourite drink was cognac, so in brewing him a commemorative beer, the brewers at Carlsberg created a stronger lager with cognac flavours. With an Alcohol by Volume of 9%, Special Brew was launched throughout Denmark at Christmas 1952 and has been available in the United Kingdom since the 1970s.

This is a nice example of an early four-digit 1950's custom Weatherby rifle with the early South Gate stamped FN action in a standard American caliber. Has a distinctive Weatherby stock profile, standard checkering, with a dark reddish hue, contrasting forend tip and and grip cap with white diamond, Weatherby black waffle pad and sling eyes. Features polished bolt with no oil holes. Barrel and frame retains approximately 95% original blue with numerous small areas of missing finish on barrel. Trigger guard and floorplate retain approximately 75% with overall edge wear and thinning. Stock is very good to excellent with numerous scuff, abrasions and some finish loss. Excellent bore and action. Topped with Buehler mounts and a Weatherby Variably 2-3/4x to 10x scope. These actions were imported by Roy from Germany from the FN plant and were customized and finish at his shop in California. Serial Number-3828; Manufacturer-Weatherby; Model-Bolt Action; Caliber-.30-06; Barrel Length-23"; FFL Status-Curio & Relic;
The earliest catalog for reference showing the J.P. Sauer action is 1961. This is an interesting and early rifle for numerous reasons: first, it is chambered for the non-Weatherby caliber, the majority of the J.P. Sauer action Mk Vs were built around the exclusive Weatherby cartridge line-up; secondly, is has the Weatherby South Gate address on frame but is not marked "Made in Germany", the actions came from Germany but this one is not marks as such anywhere on the rifle. It has the distinctive stock design with the rakish Monte Carlo comb profile with roll-over cheek piece, the standard diamond skip checkering on forend and wrist, and contrasting rosewood tip and grip cap with the white diamond design that quickly identifies as a Weatherby rifle. Features high polish contoured blued barrel with no markings other than caliber. High polish blued frame is simply stamped "Mk V" with the Weatherby California address. Sports Redfield mounts with rings and a Weatherby red waffle pad. No provisions for sights. Has a blued floorplate and trigger guard with a slight violet hue. There is a slight hairline crack or wood separation on left side of wrist that almost looks like a break in the varnish. White diamond has toned over as if some finish was added at rear of stock. Wood remains in excellent condition with the usual bumps and bruises. Fine bore and action. Bolt is jeweled with oil holes, but not the usual oil grooves seen on later Weatherby's. This rifle has to be one of the earliest known rifles built with the J.P. Sauer action between 1959 to 1960. Serial Number-16142; Manufacturer-Weatherby; Model-MKV; Caliber-.270 WCF; Barrel Length-24"; FFL Status-Curio & Relic;
Features high polish royal blue frame and barrel, factory drilled and tapped for scope on bridge, J.P. Sauer action, oil grooved bolt, blued trigger guard and floorplate, Weatherby Monte Carlo stock with diamond skip checkering, rosewood forend tip and grip cap with white diamond, red waffle buttpad and sling eyes. Manufactured with no provision for sights. This is an early German rifle that has only the South Gate, California address. There are a couple of small storage scuffs on bridge, otherwise all original blue intact. Floorplate and trigger guard have a couple of marks. Stock has a few scattered areas of bumps and bruises to finish. Near new inside. This rifle dates to Roy's earliest use of the Sauer action, early 1960's. Made in Germany. Serial Number-P41739; Manufacturer-Weatherby; Model-MKV; Caliber-.270 WCF; Barrel Length-26"; FFL Status-Modern;
