Blackmore (Richard) Prince Arthur. An Heroick Poem. In Ten Books, third edition, contemporary ink ownership inscriptions to title, B1 lower outer corner chipped, [Wing B3082], for Awnsham and John Churchil, 1696, bound with King Arthur. An Heroick Poem. In Twelve Books, first edition, lacking initial blank leaf, some creasing and heavier water-staining to Index at end, [Wing B3077], for Awnsham and John Churchill...and Jacob Tonson, 1697, together 2 works in 1, some light browning and occasional spotting, damp-staining, often light and marginal, but heavier at points, contemporary panelled calf, modern red morocco label to spine, some neat repairs to spine ends, joints and corners, old covers rubbed and scratched, folio. ⁂ Blackmore's Virgilian epic poem Prince Arthur was first published in 1695. The second mentioned is a sequel to the first, but this time using Milton as his model; both were based on the histories of Geoffrey of Monmouth and celebrated William III in the role of Arthur. The second mentioned is one of two variant issues, this one with "near the Inner-Temple-gate" in the imprint.

The story is a metaphor for a poor scholar who, by passing the civil service exams, raises himself to the status of high official.Comments: good overall.
