*John Hall Thorpe (Australian 1874-1947), THE OPEN GATE; SUMMER; TWILIGHT; DAWN Four coloured woodcuts, signed and inscribed in pencil two 35 x 27cm and two 16.5 x 19cm (4). John Hall Thorpe, born in Victoria in 1874, learnt the art of colour woodblock printing in Sydney in the early 1890s, where he worked for the Sydney Mail. He moved to England in 1902 and attended Heatherley’s School of Art with key members of the Grosvenor School. He held his first one-man-show in 1918 which immediately established his reputation. His coloured prints, a deliberate reaction to the dull realism of post-war life, sold to a worldwide clientele.
