Barrie announces 'Welcome to London' and continues to ask his correspondent to come and see him on Friday at around 5 o'clock and concludes 'It is the first house in the Bayswater Road past Lancaster Gate'. CHURCHILL WINSTON S.: (1874-1965) British Prime Minister 1940-45, 1951-55. Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1953. T.L.S., Winston S. Churchill, one page, 8vo, Hyde Park Gate, London, 29th February 1956, to Desmond Flower ('My dear Desmond'). Churchill thanks his correspondent for their letters and 'encouraging enclosures'. Together with a series of four carbon typed copies of letters from Flower to Churchill, each signed with his initials ('DF'), each one page, 4to, n.p., 20th - 28th February 1956, all to Churchill, in the first sending a small colour reproduction of the Armada Portrait of Queen Elizabeth I and commenting 'The original belongs to the Duke of Bedford at Woburn. It is the right shape, and I hope you will agree that it will make a good jacket for Vol. II.' and in the other letters referring to a television discussion for NBC which Churchill does not wish to undertake, forwarding a copy of a letter from A. L. Rowse, and a circular from Alfred Wilson of Henry Young's bookshop in Liverpool, as well as twelve early copies of Volume I of The History of the English Speaking Peoples. None of the enclosures are any longer present. One file hole to the upper left corner of Churchill's letter, not affecting the text or signature, VG, 5 Desmond Flower (1907-1997) British Publisher and Book Collector. A History of the English-Speaking Peoples (1956-58) is a four volume history of Britain and its former colonies covering the period from Caesar's invasions of Britain (55 BC) to the beginning of World War I (1914). The work was one of Churchill's writings mentioned in his Nobel Prize in Literature citation.

T.L.S., W S Churchill, one page, 4to, Hyde Park Gate, London, 19th June 1962, to John E. Harvey ('My dear Harvey'), marked 'Private and Confidential'. Churchill thanks his correspondent for their letter and continues 'I know that opinion is much divided on this matter, and I do not feel that a sufficiently strong case has been made either way for me to intervene. I therefore will not be opposing the Motion that you mention'. About EX John E. Harvey (1920-2008) British Politician and Chairman of the Woodford Conservative Association 1954-56. Member of Parliament for Walthamstow East from 1955-66. The present letter most likely refers to the City of London (Various Powers) Bill (By Order) which John Harvey debated within the House of Commons on 26th June 1962, just a week after the present letter was written.

Churchill announces 'It was a shock to me when I read of the changes as the Treasury' and continues 'I know you selected your successors; but they cannot measure up to you. So I grieve & send you both my love'. One small file hole to the left edge, not affecting the text or signature. Together with an original, vintage unsigned colour candid 7 x 5 photograph depicting Winston Churchill seated outdoors in a full length pose, smoking a cigar and feeding several black swans in the stream before him, with his wife Clementine and another unidentified gentleman standing alongside in full length poses. Stamped Kodachrome Enlargement made by Kodak Limited October 1966 to the verso. VG to EX, 2 Norman Brook (1902-1967) 1st Baron Normanbrook. British Civil Servant who served as Cabinet Secretary 1947-62, Joint Permanent Secretary to HM Treasury and head of the Home Civil Service 1956-62.

There has been a perfect deluge of rain w has stopped now the house is all in confusion", refering to her future husband, "I haven't heard fr Jack Hills I suppose he will be here tonight or tomorrow"; and 6 other ALs.s., including: 1 from Gerald Duckworth, 2 from her grandmother, ?Maria Jackson, folds (c. 29 pieces). Stella Duckworth (1869-97), married John Waller Hills [1867-1938, politician and angler ] in 1895. "Shortly after the marriage Stella was taken ill with peritonitis, and she died in July 1897." - Oxford DNB.
