Ancient Near East, Neo-Babylonian, ca. 1000 to 539 BCE. This is a very interesting steatite (soapstone) cylinder seal depicting a man with traditional hair and beard style familiar from Babylonian art and two figures that are half-man, half-lion. Lions in Babylon recall Anzu, a divine monster in many Mesopotamian religions; they also bring to mind the realistic mosaic lions that decorated the street along the Ishtar Gate. Cylinder seals from Babylon can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the British Museum. Size: 1.25" L x .4" W (3.2 cm x 1 cm). Provenance: Ex-Estate of M. Reiniger, Chicago, IL Condition: Artwork is clear and cylinder is intact -- very minor wear. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #111564

India. Manuscript Plan of the Position of the Confederate Armies under the Direction of Earl Cornwallis before Shrerungputtun. From the Fifth to the Twenty-fourth of February when the Cessation of Hostilities took place. Likewise the Position of the Enemy's Army Commanded by Tippoo Sultan in person previous to the Action of the Night of February 1792, pen, ink and watercolour plan with a large decorative cartouche and 'scrolled' key, one closed tear, old folds, tipped on to later blue paper, 355 x 220 mm A highly unusual and accurate plan of Srirangapatna during the war with Tipu Sultan. Srirangapatna was the scene of the last and decisive battle fought between Tipu Sultan and a combined force of 50,000 men provided equally by the Nizam of Hyderabad and the East India Company under the overall command of General George Harris. This battle was the last engagement of the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War. The Battle of Seringapatam, 1799, was truly momentous in its historic effects. At the battle's climax, Tipu Sultan was killed within the fort of Seringapatam, betrayed by one of his own confidants; the spot where he ultimately fell is marked by a memorial. Apart from the usual gold and cash, innumerable valuables, objets d'art and many of the personal effects of Tipu Sultan, were shipped to England; including the famous automaton 'Tipu's Tiger' which is on display at The Victoria and Albert Museum. Much of the site of the Battle is still intact including the ramparts, the Water Gate, the place where the Tipu Sultan's body was found, the area where the British prisoners were held and the site of the destroyed palace.
