A JAPANESE OIL PAINTING ON CANVAS IN YOGA STYLE DATED 1888 Depicting two beauties standing at a temple gate and observing two doves before them, one holding a small paper umbrella to protect them from the sun, the walls of the gate behind them richly decorated with wood carvings, signed 'Ando C., Tokio Japan, 1888' and framed, 63cm x 49.5cm. Provenance: a Scottish private collection, acquired in the early 20th c.
DECCA SXL 2062 - ERNEST ANSERMET - RAVEL/DEBUSSY - ED1 LP. Excellent copy of Ernest Ansermet with L'orchestre De La Suisse Romande performing Ravel - Mother Goose and Debussy Nocturnes. The record (ED1 wide band 'Original Recording By' deep groove) is in Ex+ condition showing only a couple of extremely minor and faint markings. The sleeve (scored flipback design, no blue border) is in Ex condition with only very minor wear; there is an old sticker from 'Gate Bookshop' on the reverse.

A Chinese ivory brush pot, Qianlong (1736-1795), of cylindrical form, deeply carved with the extraordinarily handsome Pan Yue (247-300) seated in a chariot, young women on a balcony and in the street expressing their affection for the young scholar by throwing fruit at him as he passes by, the other side carved with a town gate in a landscape with more women and children coming to take a look at him, 13.2cm high, wood stand (2) The story was recorded in the 'Book of Jin': '(Pan) Yue was handsome in appearance and bearing...When he was young, he often strolled about outside Luoyang, holding a slingshot under the arm. Women who met him all surrounded him by hands and threw fruits in his chariot, so when he returned, his chariot was full of fruits'.
