World War One centenary Art Trail - oak Trench Art cross. This 5ft high, charred black, oak trench cross, made from a 70-year-old recycled farm gate post, has been situated in the Abbey Gardens for the past four months and features tiny trench art pieces such as rifles, flags, pennies, boots, a Zeppelin, a heart, soldiers, a dog tag, an aeroplane, boots, a skull, a dove of peace. During the war soldiers in the trenches made ’trench art’ from old bullet shells, one penny coins and other materials they could etch messages on to send to their loved ones. This symbolic piece would fit in any garden or make a focus point outside any business premises. This lot was part of the WW1 public art trail around Bury St Edmunds to raise funds for My Wish Charity 'Every Heart Matters' campaign and to commemorate the centenary of the ending of World War 1. More information about this charity appeal can be found on their website
