Albrecht Dürer - The Resurrection - Ca. 1510 / Description: The Resurrection, Meder 154 b/d. Woodcut from the Small Passion by Dürer. As the other ones offered in this auction, original Dürer woodcuts from an early edition without text, dating from circa 1544 -1589 based on the fragment of watermark in the paper ( Meder 220.a: 'Kleines Wappen von Kaufburen mit einfachen Sternen, as used in the 'Ehrenporte' published in 1559.)Resurrection, with Christ standing in front of the closed tomb, holding in his left hand a flag, blessing with his right hand; the guards sleeping in the foreground, in the far background three women approaching, Original woodcut from circa 1510 by Dürer from the small passion, his first major project, and today his most celebrated, depicting the final days of Christ’s life. / Dimensions: 12,70 x 9,90 cm / Condition: Excellent brilliant sharp and evenly printed well contrasted black impression with intact borderline as to be found on the early impressions. Edition well ahead of the Italian text edition. On the full sheet of lead paper measuring 19,50 x 15,00 cm. Tipped with left border on a laid paper support sheet. Excellent untouched condition with no folds, tear or stains. / Literature: Meder 154 (b/d). Pieter van der Borcht (1535-1608) - Abraham with Angels - Rare large format / Description: Abraham feeding the three angels, New Hollstein 3. An exceptional large plate signed and dated 'Fecit Pe. V. Borcht 1586'. The subject with Abraham bringing a plate of food to the three angels siting on a hill below a hughe tree, overlooking a vaste Flemish style world landscape with villages and wind-mills. The landscape with the round city gate, round temple and dolomite like mountains in the back, a fortress on a kliff seems to connect with dozens of other landscapes by Bril and Breughel who always repeat the same group of elements. This is a rare print. THOMAS HARDY INTEREST: AN EDWARDIAN MAHOGANY WARDROBE FROM MAX GATE early 20th century, the moulded cornice over a mirrored door, opening to an interior fitted with hanging hooks, with a single drawer beneath, 195cm high x 118cm wide Provenance: Purchased by the current owner from the estate of the late Bill Jesty. Mr Jesty was the former custodian of Max Gate, Thomas Hardy's home from 1885. The wardrobe is believed to have been purchased by Bertie Stephens, the Max Gate gardener, when the piece was offered for sale by Emma Hardy after the death of her husband. The Jesty's later purchased the wardrobe for a 'moderate sum'. It is commented in Bill Jesty's obituary, in relation to Max Gate, that 'there was nothing in it that had belonged to Hardy (save, I think, one wardrobe...'
Boxing interest - Jack Dempsey and Georges Carpentier, a boxing poster dating to 1921 with cinema history. The folding paper advertisement printed in red, blue and sepia, 40 x 28cm, for the film showing, later in the year, of the Heavyweight fight that took place on 2 July 1921 between Jack Dempsey and Georges Carpentier. Printed in Cairo in French, the common language of foreigners in Egypt at the time. Dempsey won the bout at New Jersey City, New Jersey. Promoted as "the fight of the century", it was the first to achieve million dollar gate receipts.

An album containing over 60 original letters and cards addressed to the artist from his British and American publishers, authors, fellow artists and well-wishers, together with newspaper articles, Royal and other ephemera. Correspondents include Hodder & Stoughton (re Romeo & Juliet paintings,1912), The Society of Illustrators (New York), George Clausen, Stanhope Alexander Forbes, George Robey, Sydney Boot, Agnes Ethel Conway (re Edith Cavell memorial painting) and a signed letter by Thomas Hardy expressing his sincere admiration for the illustration of “Jude at the Milestone”, Max Gate, Dorchester, Nov.10th 1895.Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House: two letters signed by Princess Marie Louise (1922), a letter of thanks sent from Buckingham Palace on behalf of Queen Mary (1924) and an invitation card to visit the Queens’ Dolls’ House Exhibition and the Palace of Arts (1924).The Hardy letter is stuck down with glue to the scrapbook - see additional images.
